Miscellaneous Reserve/Youth News

No problem mate, and yes we'll have to see what happens but hopefully he gets it. The Wigan match will hopefully be a good chance for the youngsters to impress, and I'm hoping more will be involved than just Warren and Tuanzebe. I've been saying on here for the past couple days that our academy seems to be the best it's been in a little while.

In other news it looks like we weren't the only team to reject playing in the EFL Trophy. Makes me think something may well be going on behind the scenes that's influencing this decision although it's a shame nonetheless.

Nice updates you're providing here @spenzo! As much as anyone I love seeing us spending our vast fortunes on players that guarantee us instant success (as much as we need it currently) but the youth remains a constant thrill no matter how much we're able to spend, if the youngsters have the mentality to make it then I really don't see any need to spend money.

Like Adnan, if he had shown the mental aptitude to step up and be counted upon I doubt the Armenian lad would be purchased (can't spell his name while pretty drunk).

I try mate, I try :). Yeah there's no match for seeing a youth player do well, sure everyone remembers how it felt when Welbeck, Macheda, Wilson, Rashford etc. scored on their debuts (despite how some of their careers turned out), it's a great feeling. What's noticeable about our crop of players right now is that mentally, they all seem unfazed by stepping up to the first team and they don't seem overly eager or lackadaisical, they all just play their natural games, which is all you could ever want, and it will stand them in good stead for their futures.

Think that's nailed the problem we've had in the past, the gap between u21s and first team seemed massive years ago, now it's looking pretty seemless with every debut last season, I think whoever is in charge of bridging that gap deserves a pay hike because the crop coming through now look like they can potentially save us millions if they keep it up.

Derek Langley has apparently been sacked. There were reports earlier in the season that he was to leave, but then Henny De Regt came in to work alongside him. Now there's this. Does anyone have any info? @jb8521 @khoazany http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...tml?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490
Hadn't heard about it but was told he had been thinking about retiring to focus on his own business for a while so maybe it's the club trying to get things done all at once rather than having to replace him in a year's time

If they've done that, surely they have a replacement lined up to come in quickly? The story also says we're looking to bring in more players in the coming weeks, which is like you said before, about potential incomings.

Yeah I presume there's already someone lined up, possibly even De Regt

Andy Mitten's done an article about the academy again and it's not that pretty. We don't have a scout in London? My God that's terrible if true. We are even losing scouts to Arsenal and Spurs. Also says young players go to City and Chelsea (Castillo springs to mind) over us because of money. We clearly need to change the mentality and accept that that's the game now if you want the best youngsters. www.espnfc.co.uk/club/manchester-united/360/blog/post/2911540/man-united-have-lost-touch-with-club-history-since-sir-alex-ferguson-left

Burkart, Chong and O'Connor all picked us ahead of the likes of Chelsea and City. As with most of the other stories slating the academy in the past year a lot of the content is outdated and only making its way to the journalists after the problems have already been fixed or are in the process of being fixed. We've already brought in a number of scouts across different levels this summer and are in the process of bringing in more. A lot of journalists and some fans have spent over a year talking about how big changes were needed in the academy but then complained when the changes began to happen when the club got rid of McGuinness and now Langley

That's fair enough. It's just some of the things he spoke about, aren't good enough from our perspective. Has there been an increase in investment in the playing and recruitment side, from what you know?

Yeah as far as I know there's likely to be more investment and recruitment across the younger age levels this summer than ever before

That's good to hear, hopefully the suits have seen the light now. One last thing, do Butt, Cox and Peacock all report to Murtough? Like does he make the final decisions on everything?

I heard this too especially we're losing English talents to our rivals mainly to City whose budget for the academy is almost 3 times more than any of the rest! It's insane really.

But @jb8521 is the most knowledgeable person on this board when it comes to academy and if he says it's not as bad as it's been painted, then I won't worry much. Also it looks like we've turned our attention to foreign markets which in my opinion we didn't do much in the last 5/6 years.

 Still cracking on about players' kids playing for City.

You really can't draw anything from one signing like Castillo. Burkart also just said he went to Chelsea, Arsenal, Southampton and probably even more clubs and analyzed the infrastructure at each club and chose us. So for all the money spent on their academies, kids are still saying ours is the best.

If we don't have a scout in London then where did DJ Buffonge and Diedrick-Roberts come from? Before that, Matty Willock and Tyler Reid are from London.

I dislike Mitten's articles, most of them are sensationalist.. Attmept to get clicks using fans disillusionment with the club's management

Still bring in RVP and Phil's son despite both of them are not playing for City anymore  It's good not to have kids of those players/former players who's likely not to stay at England for long.

I'm not entirely sure but Murtough is the head of football development so I presume they do

Gary Neville said on Twitter that Zlatan will play vs. Salford City and that will be his first game for us.Don't think he's serious though.

He said we currently don't have one. Tbh I don't know why he's reporting dated news, if he knows it is. Willock and Reid were released by Arsenal and Reading were they not? So their names would've been bandied about, if so?

I see, seems like his one of woodwards boys, apparently joins in negotiations for the 1st team also. Thanks mate.

I'm not sure about Reid but I don't think Willock was released

A shame about Reid who is a strong powerful player but got to trust the club.

Rothwell has also left on a permanent deal to Oxford United.

Good luck to him. He's got a lot of talent imo.

Used to imagine a Rothwell Pearson midfield pairing in the first team at one point. Was great watching them in the youth teams over the past 5 years.

According to the coaches Rothwell is a good 7-a-side player but couldn't fully transform his talent into proper football. He needs to stay fit and play regularly tbh, been struggled with injuries more often than not in the last 5 years.

I always liked Rothwell and thought he was more likely to make it than Pearson. If he hadn't had those injury problems I think it's certain he would have at least got a few games for the first team.

Not having a scout based in London doesn't mean we don't scout there though. In 1 of his other articles Mitten was giving out that we don't have a satellite school in Liverpool while they have 1 in Manchester but ignored the fact that some of our coaches also work in the football in the community coaching in Liverpool so see pretty much every player and have signed quite a few players through that. He seems to like putting things in his articles that suit the point he's trying to make but only tells half the story.

Which is obviously designed to get a reaction, like his big one last year. Even with all the success of the academy last year, I don't know why he's still trying to feed into "the academy is shambles line". Does he know the info he's getting is dated or he just does puts it out there regardless?

In fairness to Mitten he's a big United fan himself so you'd think he generally believes what he is saying about the state of the clubs academy. He's also not exactly ignorant and will likely have contacts and an incite into the academy which will be greater than ours. It's no secret that City and Chelsea have overtaken us in the U16 and below age groups in terms of recruitment and facilities, though coaching level is always subjective and hard to measure. We seem quite stuck in our ways generally at academy level.

His articles are contradictory isn't it. On one side he talks about our "falling academy" and on the other hand he is saying ManUtd are drifting away from history because of changes in academy.

U21 was a success, but i thought U18 was quite bad, the result.
