Mikel Arteta | Lego Pep watch

In the last 10 league games, the player that earned them the most points is Pogba.

Yep...and they're big signing cost them a game by just randomly walking off the pitch while the other team were attacking. A lot of the praise after the game against us was for Partey and in comparison to Pogba, but if Pogba ever did that Neville and Souness would probably be lobbying parliament to have him arrrested.

This is the first actual time a manager is proven a fraud.

Quite amazing to see this moment in my life.
It's not done yet. We need a bit more defeats, so that people can actually compare to the PE teacher everyone is disrespecting.

I think it would crack me up if Partey somehow get relegated with Arsenal... he will question what's going on    .

I can't see them going down or being worse than mid table eventually, but the fact it's even become a serious discussion point is funny.

You'd think Saka was the next coming of Messi last season.

That's the problem, he is a youngster.

Not too long ago they had Alexis, Ozil, Ramsey..and they all gone.

Tried to replace them with Auba, Lacablud, and Pepe. Just Auba worked, the other 2 is a big problem for Arsenal.
No club in their right mind would sign Lacablud for 60 million.

EDIT:
How did they replaced a starting French striker with a French outcast striker. Boggles my mind.

All Pep's assistants so far have been terrible coaches (arteta, torrent etc). Shows you that his style is heavily based on having the most expensive players

Torrent was okay for the most part at Flamengo but his death sentence was continuing to play that clown Gustavo Henrique, who literally could be held personally responsible for about three 4-0 defeats.

I’m not saying he didn’t deserve to be sacked, but it was more to do with his choice of playing one defender rather than a general style of play. They had some good form for long periods.

Fun stat: Liverpool scored more goals today than Arsenal have in their last 11 league games.

They have Chelsea at home next. Then it's four 'easy' games against WBA, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Newcastle. But beginning 27th Jan it's Southampton, Us, Wolves, Villa, Leeds, City, Leicester, Burnley, Spurs, West Ham, Liverpool.

I'm not saying they could go down but you do begin to wonder - their squad is tragic and if it comes down to it I'm not sure this lot have the stomach for a relegation scrap.

He is showing the same problems as Poch at the end of his time at Spurs: can do good while morale is high but once the team is in a rot he can not motivate them to get them out.

They need an experienced manager like Benitez to bring believe back in to the players heads.

their only green light is our match ffs.

Embarrassing.
Can't believe Leeds drew 0-0 with them.

That's why if they are going to pull the trigger it has to be after the Chelsea match -- give the new manager a fighting chance for the 'new manager bounce' ... and in the hope that the bounce is enough to keep them up.
If they miss this replacement window, it could really turn bad for the club.

The big question is who will take the job considering what's in play -- small window to get the bounce with a reasonable January run-in but a brutal February. Its almost a poison chalice.

Big Sam would have been a good short term play. But the club (management and fans) would normally turn their collective noses up on such a manager. Not sure why an Allegri level type manager would take it in mid-season when he can't get his players in, and a bunch of unflushable lumps of turd still left at the club.
And besides, I doubt if Stan would open up the chequebook even for his ilk. It just isn't part of his business model.

They have some big decisions to make this coming few days.

It’s quite funny that, despite this defensive style he has implemented, Man City look more solid at the back this season without him.

The Ole vs Arteta narrative after that game was absolutely crazy. You could see Keane's annoyance in the studio afterwards.

Arteta may be tactically better or have more ability to implement a style of play (no idea if he is) but if the players don't listen to you it makes no difference.

Ole has done a great job of uniting a fractured dressing room at United. That's more important for Arsenal just now than tactics and "patterns of play" and Arteta is struggling to be able to do it.

I’m convinced he’s only rated as a good manager because he’s a sexy bastard with a full head of hair. Apart from that and a nice exotic foreign name, he’s an absolute fraud.

With Sky they decided he was a brilliant manager ages ago and won't admit it was wrong. Yesterday they blamed the players for everything and said we have to feel sorry for Arteta, no one can do anything with that team etc. Weird.

I think they started to play a bit better the last two games without Xhaka in the team. Their biggest problem is they have too many supporting players and no real difference maker apart from Auba who's gone missing this season.

He’s a fraud. Not ready for a top level manager job.
That said, Arsenal has been going downhill since the Kroenke purchase. Someone needs to tell him that they won’t get get the top pick of the draft and can get relegated.

I agree with everything you've said. They are in deep shit. Now imagine a scenario where Auba and Ozil hand in a transfer request and jump ship in Jan. Which quality forward is going stick his neck out and go to Arsenal to face a relegation fight unless it's a loan?

On another note, I see the media is still reluctant to criticise Arteta. Can any serious football writers explain what they see in Arteta? I see Ogden (Who is NOT a serious writer) pushing the 'players are dreck' story which is partly true but they still have a team good enough to win from time to time.

On Football Weekly this week I heard Jonathan Wilson make the admission that he's still backing Arteta just based on feelings not facts.

"At least he seems to have a plan. At least he seems tough enough to ...uh...uh...ostracise the players he doesn't believe in but there might have to be a lot of pain to go through first. Now I also recognise that when you ask me exactly the same question about Solskjaer my answer is very different (cue laughter in the studio). And that comes down to some kind of gut reaction that I somehow believe in Arteta in a way I don't believe in Solskjaer which I guess is to do with how they present themselves."

How they present themselves?
Is Ole's accent not exotic enough? Is talking about values not intellectual enough? Has he not talked enough about the pure mathematics of crossing the ball to score despite playing with a 5'8 centre forward and another who can't head the ball up front? What on earth is so admirable about ostracisising your best player and your £27M centre half? Wilson has spent years criticising Mourinho for doing just that.

Pointy arrows Michael Cox - the greatest tactics writer alive if you listen to football fans - has heaped vitriol on Ole this season (following United wins) and declared United an appallingly coached team (which is true) but has the mildest criticism for Arteta's tactics. Is that to do with him being an Arsenal fan? I don't know.

I think Dani Ceballos is absolute dog shite and gets away with murder. He’s just a pointless player and apparently very arrogant especially with the younger players. Would hate it if he played for United.

It's an easy job.

Their only aim is survival. Arsenal arent that bad. 3 to 5 win is enough to secure their place in the pl and nobody would blame the new coach.

Wasn't Mourinho an Assistant Coach at Van Gaal's Barca? Flick was for Löw. Numerous examples where it worked out, just as many where it didn't. Don't think there's a clear pattern.

Löw... is he a top coach? We wait to see on that. Right now he’s a national team manager, nothing more.

Flick managed Hoffenheim for 5 years didn’t he?

Mourinho got his start at Benfica, not a top European club.

The clear pattern is that it’s a complete unknown and a huge risk, certainly not something a top club should be doing.

When they both took over, yes Everton have since improved by buying Doucoure, Allan and Rodriguez. But when Marco Silva was sacked Everton were in the relegation zone and Everton were in a poor state.

Emery was sacked with Arsenal 8th in the table and previously 5th the previous season.

Oh ok fair point, yeah Everton were poor. Though I do think their youngsters weren't as young and their oldies not as workshy perhaps.

It's not easy coming into a big club on its backside and picking it back up.

This is showing how good a job Ole is doing at an even bigger club.

Is he still on loan?

You can throw Fat Frank into that Arteta pot too.

Having said that, I think Ole will be a better manager than he will be a coach or some tactical genius. For his long term success, he needs to get a better # 2.

Ole's current job will in the long term be seen as a foundational role -- clean-up the mess and the sins of the past. Integration of the academy with that of the 1st team is a clear and obvious remit. Getting rid of the deadwood is another. That will lower the financial/budgetary burden on the club. Once that's semi-cleared up then I think we can see more ambition on the part of Woodward balanced with a richer conveyer belt of academy kids.

Arteta doesn't seem like has the same remit.

He's just basically a European style coach rather than a manager as his title would suggest. I am sure its extremely political within Arsenal's management. So nobody wants to give up any operational authority if they can. So poor Arteta is the goat tethered to the post.

I think Arsenal's next top management and their next coach if they are smart about it will do what Ole is doing now.
Plus unless Kroenke chucks in a big injection of cash I can see them die a death of a thousand cuts if they don't do the same process as what Ole is doing.

Is it time to investigate his appointment?
Yeah. It's honestly a bit strange at this point.

The media is defending them with almost (ALMOST) the same tenacity they defended David Moyes at our team. I'm sure nobody here actually wants Arteta gone as it's clear at this point there's only one way things are going for them, but it's a strange thing. Solskjaer gets absolutely obliterated by the media for losing a game against psg that we should have won on balance, Arteta gets a little bit of a roasting and quick forgiveness for a humiliating home defeat to Burnley.

I wonder where they go next if this relegation form continues and the board is panicked into sacking arteta.

Do they bring in a genuine relegation specialist like a pulis or are they going for an experienced allegri-type and asking him to come into an entirely new league and navigate them through a relegation dogfight?

Wonder what Pochettino would say if they offered him a job.

Allegri would have no issues with that squad, he’d stop the nonsensical possession football and they’d instantly improve.
