Mikel Arteta | Lego Pep watch

Have they signed a LB who isn't either perma-crocked or utter shite yet? Or will Saka play there now they've signed a billion wingers maybe?

Decent signing but he is not someone who is going to win you matches on his own. He is a good finisher who excels when a team create chances. If arsenal play the way they are playing under Arteta, he won't be that great.

Anyways another season Arteta is getting a fair backing. Surely he has to do better. I still believe he is not good enough and is very very lucky to be still in the job. Replace him with Poch or any other good manager, Arsenal will be a serious threat for top 3. Glad they have Arteta

They really seem to be going for it, huh?

Nothing worse than seeing Arsenal fans getting gassed. They really are a revolting bunch of people. They'll be getting giddy over Arteta again and 'trusting the process'.....until the wheels predictably fall off again.

Jesus won't help them get 4th, I can see them being 5th at best. He really is not that good, he looked good in the City side but even average players can look good in such a world class system.

Unrelated, what's the plan for Raphinha given you have Saka who's nailed down the starting RW spot? I'd say LW is in more of a flux right now, not entirely convinced by either Martinelli or ESR.

Odegaard looks good so I think attacking mid is nailed and Vieira seems like he'll provide competition there.

I think it's just about providing quality, flexibile options across the front line. If you look at City last season, they had Grealish, Sterling, Mahrez, Foden, Jesus, De Bruyne & even Silva that played across the forward line, Liverpool had Mane, Jota, Frimino, Salah, Diaz & even the likes of Minamino & Origi in reserve. If you want to even try and get any where near these teams, that's the quality you need to aspire to.

Going into this summer we have Martinelli, ESR, Saka, Nketiah, Pepe & could include Odegaard. Given Pepe is out of favour, there's a clear gulf in quality & quantity, & room for 2 forwards.

Saka played nearly every league game last season which for a 20 year old is way too much. Given we could have an extra dozen games if we go far in the Europa League and the FA Cup, & that theres a World Cup in the winter, having no alternative would be poor for us and him. He already didn't look great at the end of the season and for England.

Plus, he's flexible enough to play in multiple positions and play them well. He was actually a left winger in the youth team, & Raphinha played a lot of minutes in the left for his Brazilian team apparently.

Jesus ain't even a striker either, even on record saying he doesn't prefer the striker no9 role.

Not sure if he the striker they are looking. But he be a upgrade anywhere on the front the line to what they have I guess

He suffered a crisis of confidence after the 2018 World Cup with the pressure of being his countries number 9 & not scoring a goal at it.

He's certainly can play number 9, he just needs built up again and regain full belief that he can do it. His scoring record for City when he starts is slightly better than 1 in 2.

We'll sign a left back to back up Tierney. If we can't sign Martinez we'll go for someone else, maybe Hickey.

Jesus isn’t a CF so it will be interesting to see how this pans out

Its worked well enough for City and Arteta wants to play that style of football. He knows Jesus from his time at City and he will certainly know how he wants him to play. If we are to be City lite with Pep lite then signing someone who has been very good for them is a great way to go about it.

I don't think he will turn out to be their savior. He will feel like he can walk on water after all the chances provided to him at City, but it would take a miracle for him to replicate those numbers with Arsenal. It will require more to resurrect Arsenal to their former glory.

They've had a good transfer window and have backed Arteta with a lot of money and new signings. An atrocious season upcoming then. This fraud graduated straight out of the School of Ole.

So basically I was right and yous aren't buying a striker that yous need?

I'd imagine Arteta going to try play him as a false 9.

100% expecting arteta to be sacked this season. Had a lot of money threw at him for basically no return in the league.

You play absolutely nothing like Pep.

Which striker could/should we have got this summer in your opinion?

Jesus is overrated as hell based on playing in a star studded City team for years. Won’t be a significant upgrade for Arsenal in my opinion.

Thankfully they’ve got by far the worst manager amongst the top 6, they’ll have more than one game per week this coming season, and as a club they’re serial bottlers.

Otherwise I’d be pretty concerned about the business they’re doing lately. If they had a top class manager I think they’d be a threat for some big trophies soon.

Ornstein reporting about their talks with Raphinha. Looks like a very good window for them.

They've done great business this window and if they get Raphinha too, that would be huge for them. Arteta is mediocre, but he's really being backed. Their midfield and defence is still pretty shit and doesn't look like they're addressing that, but anyway. I'm surprised Arsenal are going hard in the transfer market anyway.

Same shit every summer with Arsenal. They are back baby...and then their season ends with a big fart.
Circa 2004

Won’t be a significant upgrade on Nketiah and Lacazette? Find that very very hard to believe.

I'd suggest if he was any good, City wouldn't have signed two other strikers and then be selling him.

Gabriel Jesus was basically an afterthought until this season when he had a good month or two and people acted as if City had been sitting on a world class player all along. He’s fine. Better than what Arsenal have. He won’t score the hols needed to get massively closer to the top 2, though.

As you can see there is no end to excuses for Arteta. Absolutely incredible if you ask me the man has been backed like no other Arsenal manager ever and he’s been given time like no other PL manager of a top club I can think of yet expectations remain in the toilet. Some black magic at play here.
He is a bit of a Teflon Don but this really has to be the last chance saloon for him. Vieira, Jesus, Raphinha and potentially someone like Martinez (and maybe even a CM like Tielemans?) there can’t be any excuses even Arteta is able to conjure up if you fail this time.

Well, we'll soon see how poor a manager he is, he's been backed again, has a team that no one can argue is his team now, another signing or 2 and he'll have the strength in depth we didn't have last season, no excuses now.

Saying that, we've no divine right to demand we finish above Chelsea and Spurs, who will spend a similar amount by he end of the window.

Buy 1, get 1 free from Porto ? We signed Fabio Vieira ;)

Definite bang of Willian off this Jesus signing.
???
Besides being Brazilian, what is similar to Willian's signing ?

Everyone can see he is not good barring some or most arsenal fans who don't want to admit it. Even most of them know in their heart that he is the one holding them back. He literally bottled a top 4 to spurs. That itself should have raised major uproar. Again I am happy that Arsenal fans and the board are content with him. Long may that be the case.

Thing is, if they start the season badly, they’ll sack him and potentially install a top manager. That squad he’s building will be great under a proper manager. Young as well.

There will be excuses. Absolutely no doubt about that. The smart money would be weaving some bullshit about how incredibly difficult it is to compete in a European competition and in the league at the same time.

There is nothing fearful about that squad. They are mid table team if calender not allowed week a game.

@Pogue Mahone Excuses such as Too many signings in single window need time to gel well. Weekly twice a game for such a young squad.

Not deemed good enough by a club you’re competing with for CL football.
That is one hell of a stretch...
We spent a full season watching Aubameyang missing 3y sitters and Lacazette hands on hips gassed even though he came on as a sub on the 85th minute. He probably won't score 20 goals a season but there is a very good chance that he can't be worse than what whe had. I know that's a low bar for a potential 50M signing but to compare him to Willian is just ridiculous.

I think he'll effectively be a Firmino like player. He can drop off the defenders, provides good link up play, works hard, can lead the press etc.

Not really a serious argument against him this. City are operating on another level there is no shame being pushed out of a club like that. Guys like Sanchez and Robben were discarded by Barca and Real I doubt anybody would say they weren’t any good.

A stretch? It’s an indisputable fact that he wasn’t deemed good enough at City (nor sought after by any of the really big clubs). He is also Brazilian. Hence I’m reminded of Willian. Albeit a hell of a lot more expensive.

I think what he means is if he was any good, he would've been kept as a squad option at the very least. I remember he looked decent when he first broke through, but then became inconsistent and constantly disappears from games. A very expensive Lacazette replacement and a bit of a gamble as I can't see him being happy getting dropped for Nketiah when he's off form.

He was good enough to play for them for the last 5 years or so wasn’t he? He wants to play regularly and he only has a year left on his contract so it makes sense for them to sell him. 45m for a 25 year old PL proven player like him is hardly a gamble IMO.

City wanted to keep him though.
