Mikel Arteta | Lego Pep watch

I can see him holding on for a bit longer from sunken cost. The board let him spunk £130m this summer, sacking him 3 games in to the season would just highlight how incredibly poor a decision that was

You look at the rebuilding job Arteta had. You see the defenders he's signed in that rebuilding job. You can infer from that that he and his staff and their scouts are absolutely clueless.

White and Mari, christ alive.
Do your for one moment think he's the one signing those players? They have a DoF.

Don’t forget Gabriel, Luis and also giving Holding a new long contract :)

Isn't it Edu making the signings though?

As a club they are rotten root to stem. I know we are miles from where we want to be in terms of ownership and board decisions but they are on another level of bad.

PL's biggest spenders this season (at the present time) and nothing has changed.

All well and good but how visibly good is the set up? That's what matters

Of course he has a say in the recruitment, and he built the team based on his philosophy. He ships out the ones that supposedly don't fit. Look at where he's gotten them.

I'm sure he has input and a veto. They spent £62m on those two. Could have theoretically got pretty much any cb in the league outside of the top sides.
He might have input but how do we know he hasn't been told who Arsenal can and cannot get. Blaming him for signings is wrong.

To be fair to Arteta, the recruitment has been shit. It's only this year they've started buying foundation players but it doesn't look good when your 'rivals' are building on what they've been building over the last 3 years.

Wasn’t he supposed to be spearheading a “culture reboot” type program similar to Ole with us? Surely he has a strong say on the comings and goings of players.

Will surely be sacked tonight. P3 L3 scored 0 and conceded at least 8 so far

In all fairness he was probably only expected to get 3 points from these 9 anyway. I reckon they will give him the Norwich and Burnley game. I hope they do anyway.

Can we blame him for loaning out Saliba, Lucas Torreira and Guendozi while keeping Xhaka Chambers and Holding?

I mean, he kind of is but it only started this season, which makes it looks way worse when United, City, Chelsea etc have been building on their teams for the last 3 years. I'd say they're 3 years away from CL as it stands, 5 years if they sack Arteta.

We were in this state when Solskjaer came and he knew it so he turned us into a counter attacking team with men behind the ball most of the time. We're moving away from that now but even our 'PE teacher' could see we were fecking bereft at the back and put a stop to it.
I seem to remember Arteta did start off with that idea. They were quite solid at OT against us early in his tenure and I remember him getting a few plaudits for their defensive work. Very evident they were playing pragmatic football that wasn't the typical Arsenal passing game.

But I suppose there's only so long you can do that while getting mediocre results due to a fairly mediocre set of players, it doesn't exactly earn much goodwill among supporters and at a big club you usually have to progress things unless you are outright winning things. Also, I think you have to look at the likes of Aubameyang and Lacazette going off the boil, they would have been key to a more counterattacking style, but now he's having to go through Odegaard and Smith-Rowe as his main threats which is a different type of player.

Basically, it's a pretty tough job managing an average squad at a side with big historical expectations. But his signings aren't looking to help things and as a manager rebuilding a side that is the bottom line. I don't think he's got time for White to take 2 years to adjust for example. Maybe a more experienced tactician gets more out of the current group (looking at Emery here) but probably not something spectacular in my opinion unless they could rekindle Aubameyang.

Are they any better than the dross we are seeing? Their transfers over the last 5 years have been an abomination.

Could / Should have been playing a back 3 with White - Saliba - Gabriel. Instead I'm watching Chambers - Holding - Kolasinac.

I know many wouldnt admit it but i wonder how many Arsenal fans would turn back the clock and not sack Wenger, if they could.

Honetly never understood their feelings towards Wenger. Yes he was stubborn at times, yes he seemed reluctant to spend money at times, but he had them challenging on all fronts, while also playing some nice football.

I really don't think they are worse then xhaka and el neny. I mean, if Xhaka is part of his rebuild, then God help them

They were not challenging on any front of importance past 2009. By the last couple of years of Wenger, they’ve already dropped out of CL spot and masked it up by a couple of fortuitous FAC run, not unlike us under LvG. Let’s also not forget that half the current Arsenal team was also purchased/promoted by him.

It was time to go, but they’ve bungled life after him even worse than us. Sacking Emery was brain dead.

Their squad is brutal. Look at that back four ffs! No other top ten EPL team would take that defence.
He might be a poor manager but absolutely no one will perform miracles with that back line.
The line from his supporters was that he'd steadied the defense and that Arsenal had the 3rd best defense in the PL last season.

They have a nice run of fixtures coming up: Norwich, Burnley, Spurs, Brighton, Palace, Villa, Leicester, Watford.

Yet with Arteta in charge any of those teams could beat them without surprise.

If they can get White they could have got any of Tarkowski, Coady, Mings, Keane, Zouma, Vestergaard etc.

None of them would set the world alight but they'd all have been shrewder deals than £50m for a CB who isn't even 6 ft.

Also could have not shifted Saliba away to Marseille for the sake of Mari. There's no way Saliba is any worse.
I agree, I think Vestergaard would have been a smart one. A big lad, and decent on the ball. Would have brought some presence to that back line.

My main issue with Arteta is he needed to be very shrewd in this summer's market. He has had a bit to spend. It's probably the first time they've had a real sustained outlay on his watch. At this point it looks a bit naive in failing to protect his own position and demand immediate results, whether that's his choice or Edu's direction I'm not sure.

Because not much is expected from White and Lokonga this season, and Ramsdale isn't going to set the place alight either. Then they've signed a guy they already had the benefit of using last year in Odegaard, another one we may see the best of in 1-2 years.

He wont get sacked before october, but I just don't see how he can make Arsenal competitive again. The dressing room must be beyond gloomy now.
