Mikel Arteta | Lego Pep watch

I think there are two very different cases here.

Arsenal have been bogged down thanks to their fanbase as well. The impatience in getting rid of Wenger (when it's obvious that he was doing a decent job with the resources he had), emery (who was sacked thanks to some ridiculous signings) and the blind worship in Arteta by a majority of their fan base. Most managers get sacked when they lose atleast one of players or fans or board and another section among these three is on the fence. In case of Wenger - it was fans losing patience and players were hardly enthusiastic about working for him.

This myth that Wenger shouldn't have been let go needs to stop. He actually stayed in the job too long and started the decline. He went from 2nd, to 5th, to 6th - he took the club out of the CL two years in a row, starting this downwards spiral.

He should have left in 2015 after back to back FA Cups with the club still in the CL. It'd have been much better for his replacement and there may have been better options available.

That the board have made a mess of the appointments since does not mean he should have stayed (even then, Emery's first season was actually a marked improvement on Wenger's last).

The whole structure put in place over the past few years has been a mess and that started when Kroenke finally got full control of the club. We're finished. It's no longer a football club. It's a merchandise and stadium access company that dabbles in football. Winning football matches is no longer part of the plan.

At least the Glazers care about winning football matches.

Agreed, there's a reason I and many other rival fans that were chanting that they wanted him to stay.

Here's the thing - he should have gone because you weren't improving. However, you need to realize that you guys weren't a top 4 club by then. The investment in your side was incrediblely poor and it was only because of him that you managed to hold onto a top 4 place till so long.

Chelsea, City were better than you for most of the early part of the decade, Utd were investing heavily, and the second Poch got his act together at Spurs with Kane, Son, Alli, Toby and Alderweireld - you were always going to be in trouble.

Wenger had become a problem but you needed to correct a lot of things before you got rid of him

We had bought poorly & for the short term in Wenger's last couple of years. When you think of the summer they didn't buy an outfield player, or the summer they spent the best part of £100M on Xhaka, Mustafi & Lucas Perez, to signing Aubameyang not long after signing Lacazette, for swapping Sanchez with Mickey, to giving Ozil that bumper 3 year deal, these were all poor decisions done under Wenger's watch.

What could we really change before Wenger? He was an old school manager, didn't want to work with a DoF remember, didn't want any other real help thrust upon him. Change was unfortunately due, we just done it in a stupid way. We decided to change the setup behind the manager by hiring the likes of Minsilat, but the guy who was in charge of all that Gazidas soon left to go to Milan. So it created a power vacuum, Minsilat left when he took the hump getting looked over for a more prominent role, Sanllehi came in, it was all a mess behind the scenes. No continuity, no clear vision, all spilling out onto the football pitch. That's why the guys that want to give Arteta (& Edu) more time are willing to be a bit more patient, because it would mean yet more upheaval when we could do with a couple of years stability.

Much better for you, actually. More rest between weeks. Look how it helped Chelsea in 2016/17.

Hopefully it means we can run a smaller & tighter squad next season. After another summer, a proper pre season, and more rest in between league games, no more excuses for Arteta.

What were the excuses this year then?

No excuses, I think the only reason he has a job is because there's no one demonstrably better than him that would come to Arsenal. Known devil is better and all that.

Arsenal seem to keep picking worse and worse managers with every appointment, maybe that is why Arteta is still being kept. Probably afraid that the next one might turn out worse than him and relegate them.

No real excuses, he & we should have done a lot better, especially in the early part of the season.

However, after another window, we should be close to what he would class as his team. Squad should be much less bloated as well. Form has been very decent 2nd half of the season, so it's not like he has to rip it up & start again. His next challenge along with Edu is to sign the right 3 or 4 players to improve the first team & kick on, he'll have to, or he'll find himself out of a job.

Do some Arsenal fans regret what happened to Emery? In another final with a new team after knocking Arsenal out. Did extremely well with Sevilla which got him the job at Arse.

Should have been sacked multiple times throughout the season. The defeat to Burnley at home and the draw to Villarreal that eliminated us from the Europa League particularly spring to mind. The fact he hasn't been let go shows huge weaknesses in the hierarchy of the club. I have seen the stats where certain fans have taken certain sections of our form in the season to make it look better than it was. Having the second best form in the premier league since New Year means absolutely nothing when you finished 8th in the Premier League. Winning your last five games means nothing when you have just bottled a Europa League semi final to a team managed by the person you sacked a year earlier.

The problem is that there isn't much to say which is new about Arsenal. We have too many mediocre players. We need huge investment within the squad and a competent manager to spend it wisely. I see lots of posts saying we were wrong to get rid of Wenger but this misses the point. We may have got worse after Wenger left, but he was a big part of the initial slump which saw us drop out of Champions League football. He was unable to remedy the situation and I fully believe his time was up. What his departure exposed was how badly the club was run.

Not really. He had lost the dressing room, so is almost impossible to come back from that. We were also all over the place tactically.

Need to disagree a bit here. Of course, the most important thing is the league position, & we all agree that wasn't very good. But I don't think you can just dismiss form from Xmas. I think by all metrics it shows we are performing better, creating more chances, scoring more goals, conceding less. If we had sacked Arteta after the Burnley defeat & got a new manager in & he got the same results as what Arteta has, you'd be saying that he'd have done a good job, no?
