He seems to have some of that mental sharpness, determination or "grit" that Smalling and Evans lack. Both of the former were arguably more talented. But thats only a minor part of the puzzle.

Considering his age (soon 24) he has not achieved much, but he was obviously a late developer. I'm not sure whether he actually is Man Utd-quality (not seen enough of Burnley), but I'm sure Mourinho would love to have a player with his mentality in the squad.

Its annoying that we dont use buy-back clauses when selling these young talents. "Luckily" Michael Keanes contract is up in 2018. Could turn out to be a good investment. Would hate to see him at a rival club.

Just get him back. We are better off with him rather than Jones

If we're buying him back, and that's a big if, we're doing it in January. If the window closes and he's still not back, I think he'll end up at Chelsea or (shudder) City.

I always preferred Thorpe as I thought Keane had those mistakes in him. Keane has the more obvious CB build though.

Thats why we should have included a buy back option. I would take him back.

That said, Espn sources are pretty shite.

What's the point? Burnley will ask for an exorbitant fee and we're better off going for a more experienced at the highest level around his age bracket.

It would be more flailing in the transfer market. Di Maria, Depay etc - not even one season wonders.

Rather bring back Jonny Evans to be honest but he'll probably turn crock as soon as he steps in here.

He does look good, but I find it kind of hard to judge CBs when they play in a system such as Burnley. The difference between being a central defender for a team like Burnley and a team like United is massive, I think he'd be found out.
Having said that, I haven't seen enough of him to be convinced about my verdict either, so take my opinion for the useless one it is :D

This is a good point. Defending is much different when 5/6 of the other outfield players are back behind the ball helping the back line.

Regardless, as others have said, we really need to learn our lesson about buy-back clauses..

I'm surprised English (and Welsh :p) clubs don't use buy-black clauses more, it's worked out well for a lot of the continental sides. I guess it's probably difficult to get clubs to accept the clause.

I'd take Michael Keane back in a second. We need a CB and Keane is imo better than anything we have, except Bailly.

I think Jose will look for experience though. Fonte or something

I always thought we harshly got rid of it. I would have given further time in loan as I was always reasonably impressed when he played. I'd definitely take him back.

I think Lingard,Pogba and Johnstone will try to convince Jose to go for Michael considering they're in the same crop in the academy and Michael would have no problem about adapting to the club or lack of commitment or ambition considering he's also an United supporter. Don't think there are too much on this rumour though.

Has he progressed all of a sudden after being let go? Quite a few of our defenders seem to do well after leaving the club.

He's in the England team and although there's a massive lack of quality English CBs atm., it's still a sign of his progress.

Phil Jones being a good case in point. Not saying he's a bad defender, but whilst at Blackburn he looked an absolute rock as part of a deep back-four camping 10 yard in front of their 18 yard box and blasting away every ball that entered his vicinity, at United his positioning has constantly been shown up when he's pushed up the pitch and he's had to rely and his pace and determination to make up for it and recover and rescue bad situations he's created.

I still remember that Chelsea cup game, where they played almost full strength and we played with Keane, Scott Wootton, Rafael and Büttner at the back. We lost 5:4, but he looked like a good defender during that game. Wootton and Büttner were the problem that day.

Anderson had one of his best games for United that day.

He was always good, but never really got the chance as he had so much competition ahead of him. It was the right thing to do letting him go, he's rightfully moved down a league, grown as a player and now getting the rewards. It's a shame we don't include release clauses into players deals when they move on, but we generally let people run there contracts down and they move for free.

I'm not sure buying him back is the best idea yet, still need to see more of him, especially in a more exposed team.

We are due 20% of the next fee so we should get a discount.

If we did buy him back directly how is the sell-on clause affected? We hardly will pay ourselves 20% of the transfer fee we pay Burnley :lol: Always wondered about stuff like that.

Cant say I have watched him too much this season besides against us but at least if he did come back he would have a point to prove that we were wrong to let him go instead of being happy to pick up a hefty wage for sitting on the bench.

Well they would have to give us a discount on the fee although they would naturally try to drive up any fee with any negotiator because of that clause.

We won't be buying him back, we need an experienced centre half and we've 3 of the best centre halves coming though in Tuanzebe, TFM, Williams.

Good to see the club have learnt a lesson and will at least profit from his next move.

Yeah. I seem to remember Wootton having a nightmare  He was against Hazard though so understandable I suppose.
