Gaming Metal Gear Solid

Err, falling behind in development time thus releasing what is effectively a demo at half the price to try and save face is fecking awful.

It's a cynical ploy to keep the coffers ticking over, while trying to rush something that should have been out a long time ago. Can you imagine if all publishers followed suit? It doesn't surprise me that it's happened though, it surprises my more how long it took and how many people can't see the dangers in such a precedent.

Lots of games fall behind development time. I would much rather have a demo of the game I can enjoy for a year for a reasonable price (I consider £19.99 reasonable), rather than waiting for a release of the full game.

Maybe 5 or 6 years ago I would have had a different opinion, but the wonders of updates through the internet means GT5P can be constantly updated (For free), thus you are getting a preview of the game. If you don't like it, you don't buy the full version. If you like it, you buy the full version.

I can see the downsides of it, but consumers don't have to buy it do they?

Plus buy releasing a Prologue it gives us the consumer to give Polyphony feeback on what they can do to improve the game. (The developers have already took quite a few ideas on board, I'll try and find the live blog)

So what used to be free now costs £19.99, and that's reasonable?

Patching via the internet is a fecking awful thing for console games. Content packs are different, granted, but fixes and patches are just allowing people to release shoddy work.

Head in the sand comment.

Again, they are now charging £19.99 for things developers used to do for free.

It's fecking shocking, and it's because mugs buy it and think it's a great new idea, it will continue to grow. It's the same reason people release absolute tosh games.

When you consider the amount of time that has gone into and continues to go into developing GT5, I have no qualms about paying £19.99. (Of course others, like yourself, will disagree and I'm fine with that)

Yes there is that, but I think it is open to more good things than bad.

Why?

I'm not a mug, I love GT and I don't want to wait until 2010 to play the PS3 version. Releasing a Prologue gives me my GT fix:D

It's also my thread, I will discuss whatever I damn well want:D

Whats the 'LE' for?

And Im very impressed with the work on that front, but I still haven't seen a game surpass the Mass Effect or Shenmue in terms of music and soundtrack.

Limited Edition.

I've never played Mass Effect, and I can't remember Shenmue so I couldn't comment, but they'd have to be pretty good to top FF7.

They both do.

And no I dont have the LE, I rarely waste my money on LE versions of games. Most the time it's just a bunch of silly artbooks or some shiny collectors card or in Halo 3's case - some rediculous master chief helmet which doesnt fit a human skull.

MGS4 = a bit shit really.

A long way short of the best game on the PS3, don't own any other consoles but I would say I've enjoyed Tiger Woods golf on a mate's Wii at least ten times as much as sitting through all the tedious, convoluted cut-scenes in MGS4.

At the end of the day, the budget behind these games is almost on a par with Hollywood blockbusters. In a game as cut-scene heavy as this, you should expect the narrative and dialogue to be gripping, exciting and have you on the edge of your seat. Instead, I end up wondering what I'm going to have for dinner and if they will ever just shut the feck up and get on with actually providing some sort of entertainment or meaningful plot progression.

I don't buy the "you had to see the prequels" crap either. Every decent movie franchise features episodes that are very watchable on their own. Even shite franchises (like the latter episodes of the Matrix trilogy) are miles more entertaining than MGS4 cut-scenes.

Best game on the PS3? I would go for Drake's Fortune. More playable, better plot, better script, better voice-acting, more of a genuinely immersive experience and basically a lot more fun. Which is kind of the point of gaming, really.

took me ages to get into MGS4 but when i did i couldnt leave it alone, it was brilliant

All games have shit voice acting etc, I love it when they say something angry, and they just look like they're chillin out.

Fifa. BEST GAME EVAR!

But honestly have you played the prequels?

Just finished Act 4, that an incredible act that was!

It was intense being Metal Gear Rex! and that boss battle with vamp was also a highlight

Bring on Act 5, going to finish this now.

But honestly have you played the prequels?

Yup. All of them.

Game-play was slightly more fun (i.e. you couldn't just sprint through levels, when you couldn't be arsed sneaking) but the plot was just as ludicrously convoluted and self-indulgent. Thankfully the cut scenes are much briefer so you didn't have to spend as much time listening to people talk utter bollocks.

The first Metal Gear I played was genuinely innnovative and a bit of a land-mark game, being the first to introduce the concept of sneaking through levels, rather than laying waste to all before you. The plot was also a lot less over-blown than the subsequent MGS iterations.

All in all, I reckon MGS prequels >>>>>> MGS4

Just finished it now.

On the whole it was fantastic. The storyline is one of the best I've encountered in a video game and for me rivals the great Deus Ex, and the cutscenes were so gripping that I didnt notice the time fly (especially the last cutscene which really was very powerful and made me shed a tear).

I also loved the little touches in the game like that little MGS1 cameo in the beginning of Act 4 and I also found Otacon bigging up Blu-ray pretty hilarious too

My only complaint was that the gameplay IMO is still rather underwhelming. I'm grateful that combat is a little more fluid and deep (since im not too big on the whole stealth thing), BUT at times it does feel like this game is nothing more than an interactive movie.

Still, it was an unforgettable experience and so far my GOTY for 2008. Next up is Ratchet and Clank for me.

Dont vote for Sara to win Big Brother 9, she's an evil scheming little cow.

Good summary Kaos, you should play through it again without trying to kill anybody/get spotted. I know you mentioned you don't like the whole stealth aspect but you get so much more satisfaction out of the game when you sneak past enemies rather than kill them.

What difficulty did you do it on?

Well I tried to play it exclusively as a stealth-game from the very beginning, but after getting caught so many times, and with the temptation of that huge arsenal of wepaonry I just couldnt be fecked anymore so I just pimped out my M4 and went Chuck Norris on everything that moved....I enjoyed it at least.

Played it on the default normal setting and found it easy enough. Didn't really get stuck at all and only recalled dying when I tried to forward roll over the lazers in the palace in Act 1 and I also died when fighting vamp because it took me fecking ages to figure out how to kill the cnut while burning through all my rations, but that was it really.

Im gonna take a break from it though and play some Halo 3 for abit. Then onto Ratchet and Uncharted. And ive still got Resistance looming around.

What did you make of the bit near the end where you had to keep bashing triangle to get Snake through that Microwave filled corridor? I thought that was one of the best moments in gaming history, was immense.

I found that abit annoying tbh, I was thinking fecking hell just get there already. And my thumb started hurting.

The one thing I did find amazing and quite memorable was the CQC fight with Liquid in the end

The thumb hurting was the great thing about it though. You were both being pushed to your absolute limits to try and reach your goal. Great stuff.

Yeah the end fight was great too, so many great moments in this game, I want Konami to release a Trophy patch.

I just kind of wished I played MGS1, paid more attention in MGS2, and bothered to finish MGS3......thank god for the database

Anyway go to bed Elvis! its 3am!

Some to look forward to on that list, particularly looking forward to seeing more of Resident Evil 5:drool:

PSP has 2 or 3 potentially very good games on that list also.

It's a travesty FIFA has more posts than this masterpiece. Anyways, it could soon be trotting on over to the 360:

According to a Tokyo Game Show report from Japanese investment research firm Morningstar, Metal Gear Solid 4 may find its way to the Xbox 360 after all. Morningstar published a general article covering multiplatform trends that features a quote from a Konami public relations representative that should fuel rumors for months to come. The rep is quoted as saying, regarding MGS4, "We're actively looking into a release for the Xbox 360." While this isn't a confirmation of it coming, it does lend hope to those Xbox 360 owners who haven't plunked down money on a PS3.

However, this little quote doesn't clear the major hurdle Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has listed for the title coming to Xbox 360. He has been quoted in several interviews saying a port was likely impossible due to the game being optimized for the PS3 hardware, specifically Blu-ray discs.

IGN has contacted Konami's US representatives for a comment and is awaiting a response. The original Morningstar report can be found here

Can't see it happening myself though.

I'm playing MGS4.

What's the big deal? I walk around and shoot people? Been playing about 2 hours now... does it change? does it get better? I'm pretty bored to be honest... And this is as good as gaming gets?

Very surprised that this thread hasn't been dipped into this morning, been waiting for it, but nothing.

Is Elvis going to freak out if this turns out to be an unsavoury development?
