Gaming Metal Gear Solid

I hated act 3 because of the sneaking section which was a waste of time, but the bike chase and cutscenes at the end do sort of make up for it. The bike chase is one of the highlights of the game.

Just finished act 3, feckin hell that was epic! That cutscene in the end was mad!

Act 4 already? You're ploughing through it!

Well, it is a 'tactical espionage' game after all, can't have all guns blazing all the time!

I really liked that actually, I welcomed the change of pace after hours of running around wtfpwning everything.

I know I know! As soon as I finished Act 2 I promised I'd stop there but the story is so damn epic I just though I'd play a little longer to see what would happen, and before I knew it I just blitzed the whole thing.

I think I'm going to take a break from it and finish Ratchet.

Nooooooooo.

Go and play Act 4, you won't regret it!

I don't have it, did think about buying but decided not to because:

1. I don't know the storyline at all. (not played previous games and cannot be bothered to read up on it)
2. Not sure I would be amazed by it, like esmufc07 is, partly because of above.
3. The cut-scenes sound like killers.

What other game is it most like? Splinter Cell? Hitman? May get it one day.

By sounds off it this game seems real good, Must have on my list

That's the problem with threads like this, there's always the inevitable "best game ever!" comments.

It's decent game, but you really do need to have played the previous ones if you are going to enjoy it enough to call it a top game.

I'd advise you to play MGS1, 2 and 3 before you play 4. If you played 4 without having played the previous iterations, you won't understand half of what is going on, which would probably ruin the experience.
2. Not sure I would be amazed by it, like esmufc07 is, partly because of above.

Well, I've always been an MGS fan ever since my brother brought MGS1 home in 1998:D

3. The cut-scenes sound like killers.

They're not! I enjoyed them all bar 1 for about 10 minutes.

What other game is it most like? Splinter Cell? Hitman? May get it one day.

MGS is in a league of it's own.

1. Me either, I've enjoyed it
2. You'll be amazed. Trust me.
3. They are ok-ish, I coped well with them till Act 4 then started skipping :p lol

MGS4 is definitely not the best game of this generation, certainly not the best on the PS3 and can't really even be argued as the best MGS at all.

What it is, is a great combination of gameplay and storytelling. What it isn't is good enough to start people on to the MGS series, either gameplay or story wise.

In your opinion.

What game is better then ?

Duh

What don't you agree with? Do you honestly think 4 is the best Metal Gear? The best game of this generation? The best game on the PS3?

I'd put MGS4 and MG3 as the best two of the series, but if I had to choose one I would just edge for 4. MGS1 closely follows and then MGS2. (All superb games though)

Yes I do think it is the best game on PS3 at this moment in time and it is the best PS3/360 game I have played. (Granted I haven't played any new 360 releases since April 2007)

Interesting. Does this include ALL Metal gear games, or just the solids?

For me out of those four it would be:

2,1,4,3 for gameplay.
3,4,1,2 for story.

Well then your opinion on it being the best game on the PS3 is fair enough (not that I agree by a longshot), but generation?

Just the Solids.

I much preferred 4 and 3's gameplay to 1 and 2.

On this generation yes, it is the best I have played.

What's the best game you've played for PS3?

Just the Solids.

Come on, 3's was pretty shit! 2 easily had the most depth.

On this generation yes, it is the best I have played.

Well you've missed out on some corkers then.

What's the best game you've played for PS3?

I don't really have an answer for that, I suppose it depends on the mood. I enjoyed COD4 and Vegas2 more than MGS4, I also played GTA4 longer (not that I think it's better).

I think prologue might be my favourite so far, even though it's half a game and a whole rip-off.

I can't agree with you lambs!

Not if they're the corkers you listed below.

COD4 was only great for it's multiplayer. I didn't enjoy the single player campaign at all. RSV2 I thoroughly enjoyed, but MGS4 beats it in every department

It's best if we leave this one alone;)

I loved MGS3, nothing like being Big Boss himself. I'd easily rate it over number 2.

Now as for the cut scenes, if you cut go back a few pages on this same thread you'll find me complaining about the length of them - well having played the game I can happily say that it's the cut scenes which make the game for me - they narrate the story so well and I love how the link all the pieces together. A 15-minute cutscene will seem like nothing see as you'd have your eyes and ears glued to what's happening and it's all over before you know it.

What I've been saying all along.

Where are you at now?

Not if they're the corkers you listed below.

They are not. I'm talking about entire 'generation' (i.e games on all six platforms released since the 360), which is what I assume you are?

Fair enough. However both have much better and fluid gameplay that MGS4 in my opinion. It's not really a great comparison admittedly though, but since MGS4 has nothing to rival it on the PS3 so far, they'll have to do.

It's best if we leave this one alone;)

Why? You still don't think it's a bad road for the industry to go down?

Well, I was specifically talking about 360 and PS3. If you want to include PSP, Wii, DS and PC then I can only relate to the PSP.

But of the three next gen consoles/handhelds I have played, MGS4 is the best game I have played!

Your right, it isn't a great comparison, so let's just move on and say MGS4 is the best of the lot:D

Not at all.

I'm glad you two agree.

I can't see it myself, 3 was far too clunky and boring gameplay-wise for my tastes. The story was better though.

As for the cutscenes in 4, yes they do make the game. It's a shame the gameplay didn't have more time spent on it though.

It's not the best game across both those systems, let alone across the entire range. Since you hardly have played that many though, I'll leave it there.

Lets not.

Not at all.

So why is it a subject best left?

Thats always been the case though for MGS games. I'm just glad that they've improved weapon-combat, customisation and CQC among other things; while the gameplay is still slightly underwhelming, its still a massive improvement over the previous games.

I don't agree about massive improvements at all (some nice additions though), however it at least hasn't suffered complete dumbing down that other franchises have. Which we should all be thankful for.

OK then, but don't say I didn't warn you.

It's sweet that you think you can warn me about a discussion, especially when it comes to games.

Why do you think it is bad for the industry?

Err, falling behind in development time thus releasing what is effectively a demo at half the price to try and save face is fecking awful.

It's a cynical ploy to keep the coffers ticking over, while trying to rush something that should have been out a long time ago. Can you imagine if all publishers followed suit? It doesn't surprise me that it's happened though, it surprises my more how long it took and how many people can't see the dangers in such a precedent.
