Gaming Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain | Use Spoiler Tags for now

Prepared to be shot down for it but I don't really get all the fuss over this.

After watching several clips on Youtube all I see is generic stealth missions complete with obligatory strategical red exploding barrels and the kind of female video game character that makes you embarassed to be caught playing it in front of other people. Meh.

For me it the game creates a believable, detailed sandbox within which you play - and presents you with missions and objectives that you are free to approach and achieve in any way you see fit.

You can play them stealthy, you can go in loud - it's up to you to create your strategy. You also subsequently research and create new weapons that open up even more ways of playing the missions.

Would disagree with you on the game play(Although I've also just watched demo videos). But yeah the female character(Quite)is a bit well... awkward, what looks like the only female character in the game(I'm only going off what I've seen in the demo's and saw online)is

. Called Quiet
. Doesn't speak at all in the game
. Has her beasts hanging out through the whole game.

Then there's the stuff Kojima(Basically the director of all the Metal Gear games)has said about the character. Well I can't be arsed to cut and paste all the quotes but in short he asked the art directors to make the her more ''sexy'' then the original idea. And add all of this to the again awkward history of female characters in the Metal Gear series

. High point - Sniper Wolf in Metal Gear Sold 1

. Low point - Eva in Metal Gear 3 pretty much a walking pair of tits who's only there for male players.

And it's a bit mess to say the least

Still even with all that said I don't think Quite is all that bad. First of all you spend most of the game controlling a huge muscle man called BIG BOSS and rolling in dirt in a ''stealth suit''(Well it's more of a all weather type gimp suit). This is an actual line from the game ''go forth a return as Big Boss''the game it's self is bat shit crazy so it would be slightly odd if she didn't look a a supermodel on a Bond film set. And I think this is the main point all the Metal Gear games are essentially old Bond movies so to a certain a extent these stereotype are to be expected.

Still a far cry from the old days of Mario.

Should be getting this tomorrow in the post and I'm very excited but the draw of the old Metal Gear games for me was their production values, cinematic presentation and OTT ridiculous story and characters.

I don't really get the modern fascination with 'open world' and giving you choices - what it means to me is a diluted experience and I like a focused linear story with set-pieces. Fine for the likes of GTA but Metal Gear? Time will tell...

There is an explanation for Quiet's nakedness, I mean nobody is kidding themselves thinking the explanation was put in for any other reason other than having a character have their tits swinging about though.

Completely agree with this. That's why I wish there'd be more games like Life is Strange & Until Dawn.

I personally prefer games that give me choices as to how I progress, rather than forcing me down a linear path.

I enjoy the uncharted games, for example, but they don't hold my interest for as long as more open games.

Also isn't Until Dawn predicated on the fact that it gives you choices as to how the story unfolds???

Tuesday in the UK. I bought from Tesco - £42 including a code for Ground Zeroes that you can sell if you want. Also with 500 points that can be exchanged (example £20 of Pizza Express vouchers), which isn't bad.

Great deal, think i'll go for this and then try and hold off on playing it while i play some of the older ones to catch up on the story. Dunno if i'll be able to stop myself playing MGSV mind.

Don't see the problem with Quiet's attire. MGS has always had scantily clad women with big guns (not a euphemism) don't see why it would change now.

The points are for preorders, so you'd probably need to do this tonight.

My mate got his on Saturday, so i watched it for several hours, waiting now for my pre-order download to start. Ridiculous it's not been downloaded and done in the 11 hours the timer has ticked down.

Every time I go for a perfect stealth run, I always fail. Someone spots me and all hell breaks loose!

This game is awesome though, I would recommend it to anyone. You don't have to know the story, just enjoy the gameplay.

In the unlikely event that anyone else is playing on Xbox one, be warned, I've ran into some nasty slowdown in a couple of spots.

Right, I watched the 40 min E3 footage and now I've purchased the Steelbook edition.

I've got no time these next few months anyway

I've played all MGS games excluding Peace Walker and because they are so many years apart I'm confused to where this new game fits in to the series.

Can someone shed light on this for me or do they have any links to somewhere I can read up on the back story

Theres just so much to do in this game its brilliant! I keep going back to missions I've just completed to get the additional objectives or to get a better rank, god knows how many hours I've already put into it over the weekend and I'm only on mission 5. Transfer deadline day came and went and I didnt watch a second of it.

Got some bad (or good?) news for you pal...

Whoever recommend Simply Games deserves a medal, ordered at 11:30pm last night and just got it through my door now

I read that Quiet is easy to miss - or you can even not get her. Could you add a spoiler tag or PM letting me know how you get her?

Cheers!
Same here. :)

Ok, so I've just realised it wasn't actually deadline day last night  Football has been taking a bit of a back seat since this came out..infact its not even in the back seat, its been left back in the house.

Also, can I get in on where/how to find Quiet

@swooshboy Quiet spoiler info. Each sentence is more spoilery as it goes on.

So I believe it's an actual mission but I just stumbled into her by accident. I wasn't totally sure what to do because she is shooting you. It's in a ruins area to the North if I remember right. At first I tried to just creep up to her because I didn't want to kill her but it didn't work so I started sniping her back. When you get her health to zero you go to a cutscene pointing a gun at her head where I believe you can actually kill her. I didn't press the trigger button because I wanted her as my companion. Everyone at mother base is angry with me at the moment and want me to kill her though  [spoiler/]

Didn't bother ordering this in the end and instead i just jumped into the original MGS (on Vita). Really enjoying it so far (after getting to grips with the Vita controls), the boss battles have been a particular highlight despite the fact that i've only done two of them (i think)

Also regarding quiet

The first time you encounter her you can just creep past her and come back later. You will end up having to go through her mission area to get to one of the early story missions so you won't miss her I don't think, but if you want her just don't kill her when given the option. I crept past and came back once I developed a non-lethal sniper, I didn't want to take any chances on possibly killing her outright with a lethal weapon.

Oh wow I just used a normal sniper rifle. :-/ lucky I didn't kill her

Yeah, I mean usually in these games killing someone doesn't always mean they are dead right? But I knew Quiet was recruitable so didn't take the chance.

Servers are now on and can transfer GZ data across. There is an option to upload on GZ so I had to re-install that first, lucky the game is small.

What do you get when you transfer over GZ data? Do you get the stuff you unlocked previously, or GMP?

Cheers to you both for the info!

One follow up question...

With regard to the non-lethal sniper - is this something that you unlock purely through R&D, or do you need to do something specific? Am trying to go through missions killing as few people as possible, so being able to snipe from distance would really help!

Also, I have a silencer on the rifle I was initially given, and on the tranq gun - how do you get them on other weapons? If they are just unlocked through progression, then all good. But not sure if there is a way to speed it up / prfioritize these items.

It's all development, some will need blueprints from side ops too but if you follow the development trees on weapons you will find them. Haven't got a non-lethal sniper with a supressor yet, that will be really useful when I do. A ton of it is based on your Mother base and staff levels too, you can see them when you hover over each upgrade.

From what I can tell its the GZ sneaking suit, a golden arm and a solid snake skin but you also have to develop them. I thought some of the staff comes across too but maybe that comes later, I dunno.

Got to get through the whole day of work being distracted by the fact I'm not playing this. (Also the transfer deadline doesn't help.)

I must have preordered this months ago and forgotten as it came in the post today with me having no idea about it
