No better than Mata. This could be like Rooney in 2013, everyone thought it was a dip in form, but maybe its a decline in ability. It looks like he doesn't have the professionalism to defy the passage of time. At the very least, he will probably ask for a 4 year contract, taking him to 33 years of age. We just sorted our Rooney situation, no need to find another one.

Tend to agree. Instinctively as a fan I'm looking more at the long term, but from Jose's recent comments and his history he's definitely in the "here for a good time not for a long time" camp. He's probably thinking 33 year old Ozil is the next guys problem.

Think he's a very good player, but we've already got our fill of players who go missing in big games.

On a free-transfer, I have no problems with adding Ozil to any team for added depth, competition at the position, and overall impact over the season. He is not a player I would spend money on, but if you can get Ozil on a free transfer, why not explore it? He's not the kind of player who will break your team cohesion.

Think he was referring to this which then leads to the goal.
Looking at that then people definitely point finger at Ozil and said it was his fault. However, at times, you need to try to do some common sense tactical analysis to put context into this.

Would anyone want to use Mkhi, Mata in supposed Lukaku, Fellaini position with their back toward opposition goal, when the strong tall no 9 was on the wide area instead? Train wreck tactical positioning. Then the next 10 sec, Arsenal players tried to re-position while Watford transit from recycling possession to attacking phase. We know what happen. This creeks tactical indiscipline from the Arsenal players or the coach doesn't drill them well enough.

I am not absolving Ozil for his fault. We know his flaw, and I don't think someone like Mourinho would be stupid enough play to his weakness if he is our player. If we are gonna sit back and need an option to beat the press with long ball over the top, Lukaku, Fellaini, Zlatan, even Pogba would be there. We should have enough tall bodies in defense so we wouldn't have Ozil to do the same as Wenger. If we need that 2nd goal by attacking with space then Rashford, Lukaku, Martial should be there leading the line running in behind there defense. If it's about tidying while maintaining aggressiveness, then it's Herrera's job... Ozil is all ill equipped for all of those, so I don't get what Wenger did, especially his motivation is rock bottom right now given Wenger confirmed just before this same game Ozil didn't want to stay. Ozil if we're to sign him, is to provide for Lukaku in game where it's balance or we dominated. In such game he has no issue doing his things, which arguably more consistent or higher level than Mkhi or Mata.

I am torn on Ozil. World class attacker 20% of the time and passenger the other 80%. He would be great at Man City however not sure if we are good enough to accommodate a luxury player in the team. I definitely would not sign him for 40m but on a free it is very tempting as he's quality on the ball. Would prefer Dybala but one is free versus the other costing 120m+. If we sign him I would only offer a two-year contract as I don't want a repeat of the Rooney situation.

We should go out there and sign world class talent if we can.

It's why I was so happy when we passed on James.

Not a fan of signing players on past reputation

I hope we don't sign him.
Yes, Ozil performed incredibly during his time in Madrid, but he was also incredible for a few seasons at Arsenal and has been voted the best German national team player 5 times in the last 6 years (is the current holder as well). So, he clearly can still perform at the highest level. Ozil, as bad as he was for Arsenal last season, still got 12 goals and 14 assists (which is statistically easily better than all of Mata, Mkhitaryan, Martial, Rashford and Lingard). What's happened with him so far this season is just a reflection of his discontent and Sanchez's performances also follow a similar trend, so we really shouldn't be judging based of this season alone.
So, I can't see how getting him for free or say £10m in January is a bad move, as if it doesn't work out, we can always sell for a profit (even taking into account his wages).

There's no way Arsenal would sell him to us in January IMO, I don't really want him here but I disagree with the above post, I think Lukaku needs a creator behind him rather than a SS.

I don't know how people can just discard his performances for Germany, the current world champions as well. His passing and vision is on another level to Mata and Micky. He's also significantly faster than the former. Incredible player, when motivated and in-form (and we've seen how he transforms once he is playing for Germany — the player is still there, you just need to give him the platform to shine). Currently even Sanchez looks sub-par for Arsenal, Wenger has lost the trust of his players.

Don't think that Arsenal will sell him in January unless we pay some stupid amount of money though. It would be a great piece of business to get him on a free though.

If we get him in January it'll be a very nice addition in the right time.

I think he'll be desperate to prove he's not finished and his problems all lied in Arsenal's toxic environment.

I won't mind him but then thinking I would not touch a player playing for arsenal. They all look broken and it's not like he is 25 or 26, he is 29 so another player who is a short term fix. I would prefer a lemar or dybala. If we are to compete with this city side we must target world class talents and not past their peak guys.

Tbh the last one we got was pretty shite too.

Robin something or the other....

Timing will be a huge factor on how good of a transfer he will be. Would be much better to get him in January than having to wait for the next season with him rotting on the bench. Get him away from Arsenal ASAP.

Arsenal will be desperate to sell him in January. If we throw a 20m offer I'm sure they'll accept it.

Would take him on a free. May not be the perfect player for us himself, but he's the type of player we need. We desperately need a quality creating player through the middle. Sone one with an eye for a killer pass. Mkhitaryan just hasn't done it for me in that role. Certainly not consistently anyway.

People saying he was a passenger. Yeah under Wenger.

But under Mourinho, Ozil and Di Maria used to work very hard.

Only issue is do we really want a 29 year old on big wages.

I've come around to the idea of signing him if he's on a free. Short term solution perhaps if we are going to sign Griezmann in the summer also I'd be for it. He's a talented player and might fancy the challenge and raise his game to the levels he's capable. Also, more a good stop gap as we try and develop or find another world class player to add to the lineup. Means we can spend the funds on Griezmann 86m and a proper left-back.

Arsenal don't really want him why should United?

Ozil's prime is past. His effort and aura are flaccid.

It would be amazing if we got Ozil for cheap in January and he went on to win the league. The ArsenalfanTV meltdown would be monumental.

Has he ever played centrally? That seems our problem area. Doesn't he usyally play basically on the left wing?

So we'd have Martial, ozil and Rashford on that side?
