Mesut Özil

It's not rocket science: If a player of Özil's quality becomes a free agent, almost all top clubs will be interested in him, among them his beloved Spanish clubs.

According to Justin Moorehouse, talks have broken down between us and Ozil.

Make of that what you will.

so whats your point? Ozil at this moment in time is overrated. There are no real clues to our level of interest

Uff... I didn't say that we are interested in him. But IF we are interested in him and want to snap him up, this summer transfer window would be better than the next one. The less he costs, the more clubs will be interested in him. And like it or not, but Manchester United is not his favourite destination.

I don't know whether we are talking to Bremen. At least it is known that we haven't made a formal offer. IF we are talking to them and IF he wants to come to us and IF the talks break down because we fail to pay 15 million, then quite frankly we aren't in our right mind. But this is me assuming things based on 'ifs'. As I see it, we won't buy him and SAF happening to watch a pre season game is no evidence that we will buy him.

Well, that depends Lilly. Perhaps he wants to go on a free next year?? we've offered him 80K a week, a nice car and an duplex apartment in Moston. If that's not enough then he can have Barca.

Where would he play in a 442?

That's possible, Spoony. If he wants to become a free transfer next year, then we can do nothing about it and there are many hints from the Özil camp that he is keen on a huge signing up fee.

Exactly. Shame really he'd have got a Austin Allegro to park outside his Moston gaff.

Ozil really is a typical german midfielder (See what I did there? :smirk:)

I'll get my coat. :(

Ozil would play behind one striker as he did at the world cup. Central midfield isnt an option, the wing would be. And that versatility would no doubt be taken into consideration.

ozil is also a good option

What's the point though? I wouldn't want to see Nani benched, after the way he finished last season, just to accomodate Ozil. Theres enough competition for the position.

With the strikers we have on our books, i don't see us abandoning 442 except for the European and Big 4 matches possibly. There's no doubting Ozil is a fantastic talent, but unless he can play in a midfield 2 i don't see why we'd be interested.

All the unofficial rumours from various ITKs online is that we are trying to secure a pre contract agreement for a next summer freeby.
Thats the way i think we are working it

Yet few people appear to have read his SI article as it clearly states that Ozil is reluctant to move anywhere that he wouldn't be an automatic starter; which would be problematic for United right now.

How so? Infact of all the named clubs he would get the most number of games here at United.. Arsenal are keeping Cesc for another season and only were expressing interest (I am assuming) incase they had to lose Cesc to Barca this season.. Chelsea have Lampard playing that position... So if anywhere it has to be here.. I am truly bewildered that you think otherwise..

Where would he play in a 442?

I doubt we will see a true 4-4-2 much this year. The formation is heading towards extinction except when there is a huge disparity in ability between teams.

I don't know about that Wibble. I still reckon we'll play 442 for the majority of our games, at least until we come to the business end of the season. How else would we keep 5 strikers happy?

edit: Although i suppose it depends on what you call a true 442. I'd expect us to play with 2 up top but have one of the strikers drop back into midfield like Owen did in the first half today and Berbatov in the 2nd.

we should never ever play berbatov up front alone again ! altough he looked really good dropping back in midfield and trying to play chicarito in

I think this depends on his confidence in the players and whether he is happy to start either Berbatov, Macheda, Owen, or Hernandez. It was fairly obviously at the end of last season I thought that he wasn't happy with the form of the 'second' striker and that lead to an over reliance on 4-5-1.

Personally I'd like to see it continued. Playing 4-5-1 would not only suit Ozil perfectly but we also seem to play better in that formation too.

We might play it against the bottom half of the division I suppose but I can't see it being as common as before.

this whole saga reminds me of arsenals chasing of arshavin.. looked quality, for some reason wasnt snapped up immediately

And where might one find these itks? Sound like a load of miserable bastards off ri trying to prove we are on the verge of liquidation.

No reason why he couldnt play centre mid with the right partner.

Modric does it well for Spurs.

Rafael Honigstein says no.

chrislovescass: @honigstein @karlsentk Do you two think he can play in a central midfield two (4-4-2), or just as a attacking midfield, behind the FW? #mufc

honigstein : @chrislovescass as one of two CMs? no.

chrislovescass: @honigstein Ok, thanks for the reply. He's a great talent, I'd certainly welcome him here. I'm wary about where he might play though.

Yeah can't see Ozil in central midfield. On the wing or in the hole, the crackwhore might score a goal.
