Yeah can't see Ozil in central midfield. On the wing or in the hole, the crackwhore might score a goal.

I've said it before, but I can see Ozil in the centre of a 442. However, it would be in specific games. Games at home vs teams who are playing for a draw; when we don't actually need two central players doing all that much defending. Put park on the LW beside him and the two of them could swap positions as they drift around, with Evra or Fabio offering the more consistent width on the wing.

I don't see any real reason that could not work - it would be for certain games, obviously, but it would probably work and really help us in those games.

He does?

Gets consistently played out wide barring the occasional injury/suspension crisis.

The Modric / Huddlestone combo was one of the key factors to Spurs getting into the CL.

Just ask 'Arry.....

Luka Modric and Tom Huddlestone the hot Spurs' stars behind Tottenham's surge, insists Harry Redknapp | Mail Online

Redknapp said: 'Modric could play in any team in the world in my opinion, he's a fantastic footballer, top, top class.

'He's a little guy and people say he can't play in central midfield but he's played there in a two (two-man central midfield) against teams that play with three men in there and he's been absolutely top drawer.

"Tom Huddlestone was superb in there again as well. We knew we'd be outnumbered again against Chelsea but Modric, Huddlestone and the two wide men tucking in all did their jobs.

He's talking about a handful of games at the back end of last season (when Palacios was either unavailable or woefully out of form).

In the vast majority of last season Modric was shunted out left.

Only because Spurs did not have a good LW option. Then Bale came to life and Modric found himself much more in the centre. He played there frequently despite playing at LW at Old Trafford.

Mesut Ozil race hotting up with Barcelona set to hijack Manchester United bid for Germany star

Barcelona are threatening to scupper Manchester United's bid for Germany World Cup star Mesut Ozil.

Sir Alex Ferguson watched the Werder Bremen playmaker during the Bundesliga side's 5-1 friendly defeat by Fulham on Saturday and it emerged that United have been in talks to sign the 21-year-old.

However, Barca are ready to enter the race after missing out on signing Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal and they have the advantage of Ozil idolising the champions of Spain.

'I have been a fan of Barcelona since childhood,' he said recently. 'I can not describe exactly what it is but there is something that I love about the team.

'They've always had the best players. A a few years ago they had Luis Figo and Rivaldo - now they have Lionel Messi.

'Playing for Barcelona has always been my dream and someday I hope to achieve it.'

Real Madrid are also interested and reports in Spain say they have told Ozil to sit out the final year of his Werder Bremen contract before bagging a lucrative move on a free transfer next summer.

However, United are keen to act now after Ozil's impressive showing at South Africa 2010 alerted Europe's elite.

Werder are torn between cashing in now or keeping Ozil for their attempts to get past Sampdoria and qualify for the Champions League.

Now that Fabreags is not moving, it seems very likely he will end up at Barca. Would not rule out Real though.

Some Spanish sites claiming that Madrid and Barca ar going to make bids soon.

Course they are, yet again trying to be stingy and hike the price down will come back to haunt us.

Oh yeah, because United can just offer 100m for the player and sort it all out like that.

No matter what United offer, Man City could offer more. If United want a shot at this player then they can't play their hand too early.

Christ, it's like people still don't understand Uniteds financial situation.

Its difficult for a lay man to understand our situation when Gill keeps on reminding that there are 80m in the bank and that the Glazers are better owners then Jesus/Mohammed/Buddha put together

You've missed the point completely. Even when the money has been there this has happened. Robben and Ronaldinho to name a few?

Well, that's a fair point. But I don't think there's much excuse for anyone thinking United can win in a bidding war for a player with any of our rivals at this stage.

Yep. That was becasue Spurs had no right backs so Assou-Ekotto filled in and Bale went back to left back.

We have feck all money to play with. All we can do is be cagey and take a shot at the player late in the game. That's the bottom line.
Maybe we tried to be too clever in the past, but financial reality forces us to be cagey now.

During the PLC time no one was stupid enough to come out and say 'look guys don't worry we have 100m in the bank' and we are talking here at a period when our financial situation was muuuuuuuuch more healthier then it is now. The club ran like a business and the chairman's job was to focus on the club and not issue cheap propoganda which till now had proven to have no basis at all.

Anyway if he goes to Madrid or Barca he will instantly get the "mercinary cnut" label

With Kaka out injured now it was a definite that they would go for him. Plays in the same style and pos.

Urm I doubt that very much.. They will get Cesc eventually and till then they don't really need a player like that.. Infact I can't even see where Cesc would fit into their starting 11 as things stand..

I agree with that, cagey is the word

One thing not mentioned so far is that we bought Hernandez and Smalling for a combined £17m - not all paid at once but crucially I don't think either is on more than £30k per week in fact I would think smalling is on perhaps 15-20k a week with Hernandez 20-25k per year.

Now if Ozil does come he would be on near £100k a week so add that to a potential trasnfer in the region of £12-15m we are looking at another £17-£20m down without any major sales.

We sold Foster & Tosic for £6m each.

Would he feck.

He'd be on around £60k-£70k. Theres no way Ferguson would have a 21 year old would come in and become one of the clubs top earners straight away.

That'd be more than Giggs and Scholes who have been here for 20 years and won the club so much.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but Wednesday may prove to be a key day as Bremen have a CL game. If Ozil does/doesn't play for them might be an indicator of his future destination.

Why would he even consider us then when he could earn twice that at Real, Barca, City & Chelsea?

A week on Wednesday, still 9 more days of this.

Giggs and Scholes are on £85-£95k - ie over £4m a year. Well Ozil will know Chelsea could offer him around £100k so United will have to at least be in the ballpark if we have any chance of him coming.
