Giggs and Scholes are on £85-£95k - ie over £4m a year. Well Ozil will know Chelsea could offer him around £100k so United will have to at least be in the ballpark if we have any chance of him coming.

Then it won't and should not happen.

How a 21 year old new signing can get more than legends like Giggs and Scholes is beyond me. I'm all for this signing but not if it means doing things like this. Fergie will make any youngster prove himself AT united before they get huge wages.

If the Balotelli deal goes through he'll be on £150k++, and he's 19.

That's what we're competing with nowadays. Players want as much cash as they can get, and fair play to that.

Its difficult for a lay man to understand our situation when Gill keeps on reminding that there are 80m in the bank and that the Glazers are better owners then Jesus/Mohammed/Buddha put together
Ferguson keeps remindig us as well
We have feck all money to play with. All we can do is be cagey and take a shot at the player late in the game. That's the bottom line.
Maybe we tried to be too clever in the past, but financial reality forces us to be cagey now.
I still don't agree with this. There's money to spend if Ferguson wants. Ferguson just doesn't want to is all.

yeah but if you sign for city over united, chances are you're a bit of a wanker. I think it's right kids ask for silly money at lesser clubs. At the end of the day, City and United are worlds apart. I think yeah it's fair

We've spent Money already, there is money to spend if he wants. You don't know there isn't either.

I don't know there isn't. Just like you don't know if there is.

If I was to make a stab at it, I'd say there's very little, hence the reason we've not done much in the transfer window when there is value out there if you look hard enough.

You don't know that. Unless you've seen the accounts.

To be fair, we've all seen the accounts - there was around £100m surplus cash last time the figures were released, if I recall correctly. How much of that money is allowed to be spent on transfers is the question...

Would I be right in thinking he'd be our first Islamic player?

Your basing it on the fact that we haven't spent any money, not on the fact that maybe Ferguson doesn't see the player out there he wants as the reason why we've spent so little and that we have a pretty big squad with shitloads of youth coming through.

If he does join us, he would be our first Muslim player yes......

Would be interesting to see if he actually does fast in Ramadan (which is around 3 days away) or he doesn't...it is bound to have an effect on performance if he does..

I have played football while fasting, in mid-high 40 temperatures, and it is seriously not pleasant....

I think Anelka fasts too from what I have heard... Kolo Toure doesn't.

Diouf is muslim.

I was wondering about that and found this interesting short article:

A ruling handed down Wednesday allows German Muslim soccer players to break fast during Ramadan as not to affect their performance.

German Muslim soccer players received a fatwa Wednesday allowing them to break fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

Fasting, including abstaining from water, lowers the players’ endurance.

Last year, three players received formal warnings from soccer club FSV Frankfurt for fasting.

Egyptian theological institute Al-Azhar advised Germany’s Central Council of Muslims on the decision. It ruled that if the player is under contract and soccer is his sole source of income, he could break fast as not to affect his performance.

Aiman Mazyek, general secretary of the Central Council of Muslims, accepted the ruling and noted the importance of “keeping the body healthy” in Islam.

Why Some Muslim Soccer Players Won’t Fast This Ramadan

Surely the heroin addiction would be more of a concern than Ramadan.

That or the fact that he died three years ago.

I can imagine, I'm fairly sure we could manage it and work something out with him so everyone is happy. I would imagine he does fast as I'm sure I read he read's the Qu'ran and prays for himself and team-mates in the dressing room before each match.

This is from ESPN Soccernet. I have no idea how reliable it is and whether it is stating the truth or making up some bullshit, but if you read what else is on the page, it seems to be reporting fact rather than rumour:

11.51 BST Soccernet's very own Fifth Official has just seen Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson emerge from the Glazer's London office grinning like a Cheshire cat... has deal for Mezut Ozil just been sanctioned?

I did say Monday between 11am and 2pm the deal would be sorted.

You can all thank me later.

Holy shit. That is the worst attempt at transfer gossip I have ever seen! Even The Sun would be embarrassed by that one.

"I have no idea how reliable it is and whether it is stating the truth or making up some bullshit..."

Are you serious?

 did someone spot him at the airport? His agent? Girlfriend?

No, Fergie was happy.

Berba came and was on more than Scholes or Giggs. heck I beleive Rio has ben on more than them since his last contract not his current one where he is on £120k a week.

Why do we care so much about what City do?

We have to live with own financial situation and keep the values that make our club special.

We would never give a 21 year old who isn't one of the best players in the world 100K a week. It's not the United thing to do. The whole dressing room looks up to certain players as leaders or as people to rely on, because they've performed over a period of time (Rooney, Rio, Vidic, Giggs, Scholes). It would be ridiculous for a 21 one year old, who I think we should sign, to walk in the next to training having achieved nothing near those players but earning more than some.

I'll be really surprised if we do it. If we do, you've got to think Fergie's seen something unreal in him for him to do so.

He's just bought a mall of Malcolm for a terrific price.

Berbatov was an established player who we thought was worth 32 million.

Just for my reference, how much was Rooney on when we signed him? And how did it compare to some other big earners at the club?

Rooney signed on for circa £50k a week which considering it was 2004 was perhaps a shade off our top earners circa £70k.

SO I would say Ozil would be looking at near £90k or above because if the likes of shitty and Barca are paying well above £100k.

Yepp in fact we did spent an amazing net spending of 7m this year. Can someone make a summary of what we had spent vs what we had sold throughout the entire Glazer era? That would be an interesting stat.
