gera

But seriously there is clearly an interest from, whether we sign him is an entirely different source. Lots of noises coming out about us being in negotiations and Fergie not once denying anything in his press conference today. Nothing might come out of it but I think we're interested.

No one knows what a manager/scout has in mind. There where instances where the media saw a manager watching a certain team and concluded that he is interested in a certain player (ex a striker) and then, few months later, a defender from that same club was signed. Scouts/Managers tend to keep an open mind themselves. For example if I remember well when SAF's brother spotted Forlan he was instructed to search for a defender. We ended up signing a striker instead.

If people want to hope in vain or not, let them  Someone posted something about Bremen having a game in Europe sometime this week, so all the expectations would probably die after that match as I doubt Fergie will want him to be cup tied if he's going to buy him for this season.

That match is on the 17th. Long time to go ;)

If Fergie was really interested then surely he would've watched him play rather than scooting off at the half time. That is unless he was checking out Danny Murphy.

He came on in the 38th minute, right?

Amazing that our resident loons think those 7 minutes were all Fergie needed to fulfil the main purpose of his trip.

Well, not amazing. Kind of predictable really.

The youtube method. Watch a player for 7 minutes and decide whether he's good or bad.

My bad, thought I read somewhere that it was this week, oh well this gets to drag on for 9 more days or at least until Fergie just says no in about 100 different languages.

Well Fergie had a chance to say no in English just an hour back but he avoided the topic. Us muppets live in hope.

Though if this does go through the reverse muppets will be not too happy :D

This deal makes sense. We all know it. So do the Glazers. They'll save money on Ozil's training gear. MO7, same as Owen :D

Well the fact that he left at half time suggests he was only ever going to stay for the first half, I'm sure he's a busy man, and I don't see why he'd know the team Bremen were going to field any earlier than anyone else. However little his appearance at the game says on the matter, the fact that he left at halftime doesn't say anything more. It's speculation on both sides of the argument - either ye're all loons, are ye're all just being human

Sir Alex plays down Mesut Ozil link

United have been linked with a move for the playmaker and speculation only grew when Ferguson was spotted watching Fulham's friendly against Ozil's Werder Bremen on Saturday.

But speaking after United defeated Chelsea 3-1 in the Community Shield at Wembley, Ferguson insisted he was merely scouting Fulham ahead of the Premier League meeting between the two clubs on August 22.

"I think he's interested a lot of teams but at this moment in time I trust the ones I've got," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"I think people recognise the confidence we have in the younger players coming through at the club, and we'll definitely stick by that.

"We got to have a good look at Fulham. We've got them two weeks yesterday and under a new manager you always want to see what they're going to change."

Ferguson was pleased with United's performance at Wembley as goals from Antonio Valencia, Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov secured a promising 3-1 victory over Chelsea, who won the domestic Double last season under Carlo Ancelotti.

"It was a decent display and I'm very happy players such as Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and Park Ji-sung are nearer match fitness," Ferguson said. "Some of the football was very good at times. I think we deserved to win it."

On Hernandez's goal, which saw the new signing kick the ball into his own face and in, Ferguson joked: "He'll not try it again - it was a quite peculiar goal. But he's quick to get in the box - he's a really good finisher. He's got a bubbly character and speaks good English. He's settled in very well."

Fergie going himself to only scout a team for forty five minutes just sounds odd. Media is split on him denying or avoiding Ozil talk.

Can we afford the umlaut? That is real question

Indeed. I personally think it is strange for him to miss the open training session to see Fulham in a friendly. Plus if he was only there for the first half, he missed them scoring 5. But there are definitely plenty of reasons to want to see Fulham as well. We have hardly been comfortable at Craven Cottage in recent years and you never know what a side will be like under a new manager.

Personally I think the trip makes most sense if it was for both Özil and Fulham, as neither on their own would be worth attending in person.

I’ll ask again; has anyone actually got a source for the first half thing. I have yet to see one?

I’m not a muppet getting my hopes up, but I thought the question dodging was interesting. It certainly wasn’t the denial some on here are portraying it as. I trust Fergie’s judgement and am just enjoying following this saga.

Ferguson hinted he was an admirer of the 21-year-old midfielder - one of the best players at this summer's World Cup - but asked if he was interested in bringing the playmaker to Old Trafford, he replied cryptically: "I don't know."

Hmmmmmm

Well we'll get to know by next Tuesday. If he's picked for their UCL game then it's time to lock this thread.

If he went to that game with the intention of casting his eye over our main summer signing you think he'd bugger off after watching him play for just 7 minutes just because he's a busy man?

No chance. If he went to Craven Cottage to watch Ozil he'd have cancelled whatever other arrangements he'd made for the evening and watched the second half.

You don't expect fergie to sign a player based on a pre season friendly...I think fergie should have known his quality by now so its pointless to think fergie will buy a player based on that friendly.... And the thing that is more idiotic is that fergie scouting a pre season game of his future opponents :rolleyes:

Say what you want Fergie did nothing to silence the speculation with his comments today. A simple "no we're not interested" would have sufficed.

Staying for 45 minutes makes no sense for scouting a player or a team. I expect he was there to cover a visit to a brothel.

Well I for one is quite happy with the current squad.

For sure we'd all like another midfielder in the team but Ozil isn't the type the we need. With strikers we've got I don't think we can afford another one playing just in behind the lone striker. I am sure Hernandez and Berbatov would be pushing for a starting place. I'd any day see 4-4-2 over a 4-5-1.
Plus we've got a lot of players whom you can't put your hand on and say is going to make it. The likes of Anderson, Gibson and Hargreaves need time to see whether they will make it/or ever come back in Owen's case. Also signing him would kill the chances of Cleverly, Gibson and co.

Besides we've also got to play along the new 25 man rule, buying would mean another foreign player and someone needs to chucked out and that is one of the main reasons why Fergie is insisting on bringing our own youth (not that you need a reason to bring in homegrown players)

If anything, the lack of a negative answer tips the sides in favour of a positive answer.

I think.

hmmm... possibly? I don't know, but I doubt you do either! Like so many have pointed out, it's very hard to tell a lot about a player from a preseason game, so why would it be so important for him to see the second half of the game that he'd cancel any other plans he'd made?

Surely the idea that you have any clue how Fergie manages his diary is a more lunatic suggestion than the idea that maybe, just maybe, one small part of his decision to go see the game was to take a peek at a player we've been heavily linked with?

I think that agenda may have been that Fulham is our second opponent in the league.

The plot thickens..

No really .... Fulham play Bolton in Bolton next Saturday in a competitive PL game. SAF will be doing sweet FA next Saturday. I short 30 min drive to Bolton then would have been a far better way to assess Fulham's form and new strategies!

I've no idea how he manages his diary but it defies common sense that he would attend a game to watch Ozil, then buggar off after watching him for 7 minutes.

Here's an alternative explanation. The explanation Fergie himself gave. He went to watch Fulham and knew he'd see all he needed by half-time.

Now, which of those two scenarios is the more likely?

I think both explanations are pretty believable to be honest, as is a mixture of the two ;)

leave it Pogue, you won't persuade some people even if Ozil had a 7 second long cameo

Why not watch them play next week at Bolton? Just asking like.

Forming an opinion in seven minutes (if SAF actually did leave at half time) - retarded.

Learning all he needed to from one half of a preseason game - retarded.

Take your pick.

United, Arsenal and Chelsea are all interested in him. Madrid and Barca aren't in the running according to DTguardian on twitter, although he is retweeting his info from a few days ago.

SAF was not at Craven Cottage to 'scout' Ozil. As he admitted today there are plenty of teams who already know what a prospect he is and that would love to sign him. So only watching for 7 minutes in neither here nor there, its a complete red herring.

I think we are very interested in signing him ... and SAF took this opportunity to meet him in person before the game, have a decent chat, a pre-signing interview if you like. And Im sure this was in the full knowledge of Werder Breman and with their blessing.

We may still not sign him, things can go wrong, but that does not mean that we are not trying. The club is always looking a bringing in new players that will improve the club but we dont manage to recruit every single one. Those who think we are not interested in Ozil have in totally wrong.

Im sure SAF knew about Ozils potential many years ago! In fact, he probably tried to sign him years ago!
