It won't be last minute if we sign him as Werder are going to be in a playoff to get into group stages of the CL and if he hasn't moved by then, he'll end up being cup tied.
I don't see SAF buying a player like him only to be cup tied in the CL.

From Honigstein. Take it with a pinch of salt though. He said Ribery was going to end up playing for a team in red that's from the North West last season.
Arsenal and Chelsea dont really need him, especially if Chelsea sign Ramires and Arsenal keep Fabregas, both will have a flood of midfield options, Arsenal have about 16 players like Ozil, not as good granted but still.
Chelsea could use him, Ramires doesn't solve their lack of creativity.

Just to clarify if we buy Ozil does this mean one of our foreign players will have to be de-registered to make the 25 man squad rule.

Probably means Hargreaves won't be registered. Which let's face it won't be a huge loss.
No none of our foreign players need to be deregistered.
You have to have 8 home grown players in the squad of 25 (which is players over age of 21 as of Jan 1, 2010). Of top of my head
Neville, Scholes, Giggs, O'Shea, Rooney, Brown, Fletcher, Carrick, Gibson, Evans.
Also, more and more it looks like Hargreaves won't make the 25 for the first half of the season and as of right now he fits in our squad of 25.
Where it may be a problem is the squad as it stands right now - all those in the first team frame - we have 25 players including Diouf, Anderson and Hargreaves. So if we want to bring in another player over 21 - one of them may not make the 25.
It is a big loss. We hassled and unsettled Bayern in order to get him. One of the longest transfer saga's I'm aware of. Played 20ish games and he was what, 24 million?
His recurring knee injury is just incredibly unfortunate, something we perhaps should have considering before buying him. However, not registering Hargreaves is basically saying career over. Gotta feel for the lad.
Incredibally unfortunate? I thought he had problems with his knees at Bayern? I rate the fella, but if we knew he had issues with fitness then spunking 24mill odd on him was a BAD move.
We've learnt from that lesson.
Back on subject, I wouldn't be shocked if we put in a panicish bid in for him late in the window when another team comes sniffing for him. Its the usual United way.
