Anyone else think running down contracts is a slightly shitty thing for young players to do?

The club invests so much time and effort making them into the player they are and get nothing in return but a massive hole in their squad and no money to fill it with. It just seems wrong.

I don't have a problem with it in cases like Ozil's, where he hasn't spent his entire career there.

In truth, it doesn't bother me that much unless the club aren't that well off, and the player rejects moves to go on a free a year later.

I couldn't agree more.

Am I right in thinking that they don't even get a compensation fee?

Calm as hell mate, actually all this got a giggle out of me and then kinda felt bad for all these muppets. Wumming not good, not good at all.

I don't see any harm in muppetry over a player we could be in for and actually afford. If this thread is making you laugh you obviously need to keep it to yourself. If you take Gill's and SAF's word as law then you're a fool.

they didn't exactly brought him up tho. Bought him from Schalke 2 years ago.

At the age of 19, spent £3m+ for him and wage on top, developed him as a player, gave him the opertunity to shine and in turn he just waits to go on a free.

Yes, but he did help Werder claim the 3rd spot and opportunity to go into CL group stage, where I think his wage and initial value would be justified. I think having a talent like Ozil for 3 years, having paid for him 3 mills will have more positives than the negativity - losing him for free.

It is, it's a very rubbish thing to do, particularly because Schaaf has been like a father to him and gave him responsibility and opportunities whilst at the same time trying to put the pressure off him. I'm not a Bremen fan, but regarding how they treat their players, they are probably one of the nicest clubs out there and they would have definitely deserved a better treatment from Özil. They know that Özil wants to move on and they don't have a problem with that - after all, Diego is still worshipped like a hero. But they think he owes it to them to extend his contract (probably with a buy-out clause) so that they get a decent transfer fee when he leaves next year.

Anyway, regarding United, the Özil chapter can be closed. There are definitely no signs that he will come here and if he leaves, it will be for a top club in Spain. And I'm saying that as someone who would love to see Özil at United. But it's definitely not going to happen.

As a matter of fact their words don't mean a shit.
Its hard not to laugh when someone already posted that the guy is on holiday till monday and Gill is in the States, all those sitings stories are hogwash.

What makes you say that?

He himself has said that he dreams of playing in Spain, over and over again. In press articles about Özil, Manchester United is only vaguely mentioned - among Tottenham, Manchester City and the likes, whilst he's always linked with Real and Barcelona. There is definitely no bid or even concrete suggestion from us, Allofs himself said that over and over again. If there was one, Allofs would be happy to admit it because it would drive his price higher. But there isn't.

As it seems, Özil would fancy to Spain this season, whilst the Spanish clubs are still hesitant because he's a free agent after next season - even for Real and Barca, 16 - 20 million euros are no peanuts. Özil himself would get big money from them if he moves as a free agent so he can live with staying for another season in Bremen. And both clubs would be interested in him, because if he is a free agent, they will snap him up, no matter whether they actually need him or not, he's simply that good.

Look, I like this guy myself and fair enough if some people get their hopes up that we might sign him. But it's pretty safe to say that they will be disappointed, this transfer is even less probable than Benzema's transfer ever was.

A cynic might say they were probably following this thread and made that up to take advantage of the schism that was appearing.

Signing this lad would be a poisoned chalice. He'll want away to La Liga within 3 to 4 years.

Looks quality though and cheap as chips.

he wouldn't fit directly into our system but would give us options and is too good not to try and sign given his contract situation.

Wouldn't solve the problem of how to replace Mr. Scholes though.

I would be pleasantly gob smacked if this happened.

That link is obviously a load of bollocks however.

yeah, deadly serious. Ozil will be at United next season. Our sources are very reliable.

Just like Benzema’s “friends” had confirmed last year that he would join United?

We’ve heard £12million but our source wouldn’t know the fee being discussed.

Wait and see. That’s all I’ll say.

Just trust me. Our sources are very reliable on this one.

I wasn't convinced at first, but it sounds like he's slowly convinced himself, and that's enough for me.

so long as we didn't let him run his contract down we'd be laughin'

I don't agree, I hope transfers fees are completely eradicated in 10-15 years.

it isn't all roses on the player's side though. It depends on your risk appetite. In football, you are one tackle or one twisted knee/ankle away from suffering severe injury that can ruin your earning potential. Running down contracts is playing with fire as if you get horrifically injured with 6 months to go, you could be out in the cold or your next contract could be something shit compared to what you would've had if you had extended prior to injury.

It comes down to a player's risk appetite IMO and a player deserves his freedom of choice if he wishes to see out his contract regardless of age.

Your favicon kind of looks like Liverpool’s badge.

Surely that in itself makes it a very credible website.
