He is best suited for the link role between midfield and attack.

Yes he's best suited the role he actually plays. Or the roles he's played before on the left and right wing. Not in central midfield just because he's good at passing. We had this weird theory with another player, who went to City. But just because you've got the vision and ability to play some great passes doesnt mean you'll be a central midfielder.

I still think SAF would be a fool to let this slip, fits with the transfer policy perfectly. Hardly mega bucks if it doesn't work out.

I must admit that since coming on to the caf and listening to some posters who know their onions about football I have learnt that you are correct in what you say about skill and vision does not always equal a good midfielder.

Central midfield is probably the hardest role to play on the pitch and unless a player is coached onto it from a young age he will never master it.Certain players with loads of ability will play the role ok but a world class number 10 shoved back into midfield will be made to look stupid by an average player who plays center mid all the time.

Very true, these players look forward all day, they get the ball and look to make things happen. A true central midfielder knows when to play it simple and when to look for the killer pass. They see it and can make things happen but their main obective is really keeping the ball and winning the midfield battle, positioning is key.

Flair players like to drift to find spaces and you cannot do that from the middle of the park.

If anyone is suggesting he should play in a 442 with Fletcher I make you absolutely right but I never have. I think he'd be ideal to play in the middle of a 451/433 system a la:

...............................Back four..............................

.......................Scholes......Fletcher.......................

.....Valencia.................Ozil.........................Nani.....

...............................Rooney.................................

That's the role I think most Ozil advocates are invisiging him playing for utd this season (God willing).

looking at it from another way.My son is a very good centre half and is very calm and assured with the ball at his feet.He has played that position since 7/8 years old bar the odd 10 min filling in at right back to cover injury.I know his level and age are different but his coach tried him at center midfield last season and it was the worst game I had ever seen him play and I went mad at him :(
One of the coaches had a quiet word and said it was unfair to judge him on the one game but although a totaly different scenario it shows that even though he possesses all of the attributes to play in midfield and has what I thought was a good football brain when he tried it he looked like he had never played the game.

Yes obviously. If somehow he meant playing in the hole when he said "Complete midfielder" then fair enough. But I cant see how. Surely the only way to be a "complete midfielder" is to be great going forward and going back and that would be a normal central midfield role. Ozil is never going to be that player.

I mean Berbatov defends more than he does and we dont play him in central midfield. But I'm sure Ozil will improve his defending and there's no reason he cant play in the hole.

Reminds me of Rio Ferdinand........

we all saw what happened when he was once played in central midfield...was away to Blackburn or Bolton I think a few seasons ago..disaster..

I see, we're in total agreement then! Honestly I would prefer us to sign a "complete midfielder" than Ozil, someone who can let us play 442 again (the way I think utd should always try to play). However it seems the complete midfielder is a dying breed, the only player I can see of that ilk and quality is Hamsik but he would probably be too expensive.

He should be tried in training and given a genuine chance in the position. However i think once a kid is at a certain age (and a central defender) they tend to stay in that position.

I say this due to how many pros started out in more advanced positions to end up playing at the back. It is not uncommon to have been a winger or striker and end up a full back, or a forward/midfielder and end up a central defender. It does seem to happen alot less the other way around.

A full season in midfield would do him good for a future as a centrehalf.

Ozil is not going to be a central midfielder. He plays many positions and that isnt one of them.

I agree but neither did Ando, but we usually play 4-4-2 at home against weaker sides with 2 up front(usually Berba and Rooney), Ozil doesn't have the work rate of Scholes or Fletcher, can't see him play as AM in that formation.

In a 4-4-2 he can play on either wing, and there's no reason we cant make it a 4-4-1-1 with Ozil in the hole. He does get his fair share of goals and with him behind Rooney, Rooney may even get more.

Apparently sky are saying he's in Manchester?

Can Lailaini confirm his current GPS readout before we go any further please.

I genuinely don't know guys, just had an email from a mate and we're both in work so he'll be hearing it from elsewhere too..

Who would play alongside Fletcher in a 442 or 4411, we've established it isn't Ozil and the rest of our midfield proved pretty inadequate in that role last season (especially Carrick). So really we're back to square one, honestly if we're playing 4411 then I'd rather have Berbatov in the hole than Ozil.

yeah but Berba, Hernandez,Macheda and Owen should have more playing time IMO. But yeah on the left wing with Nani/Valencia on the right is deffinately a possibility.

ffs stop wuming you guys, and people I can't believe you guys are falling for it.

We aren't going to sign anyone, so stop dreaming.

If they really are only looking for 16m euros then I honestly can't understand why nobody's moved for him yet.

It does sound weird i know, and yet it is almost the norm of how clubs act - no one wanting Eto'o (season before he went to Inter), Robben, Ribery (when he moved to Bayern), Snjider.

He also played in CM against Wolves with Rooney in an FA Cup game and looked very handy.

Which is why we need to look at loaning an extra player out if Ozil did come. I dont think its the most likely though. I'd have Welbeck and Diouf on loan now and if we signed a striker or player to start in the hole, then Macheda would go out as well. Leaving Rooney, Berbatov, Hernandez and Owen as extra depth.

16 million euros is what? 12-13 million quid? that’s unbelievably cheap really for a player of his obvious ability and i am shocked as of yet no ones matched that valuation, maybe with him being in the last year of his deal interested clubs are either going to wait until the very last few moments of the window as the price will inevitably continue to drop, wait until January where the price will be even less or just wait until hes a free agent next summer.

I suppose if hes definitely not signing a new deal why pay 16 million euros now when you can get him for much less or even nothing at all in the next year.

If it comes to January, I think most clubs would rather just sign a free pre-agreement with him to get him next season and avoid paying any transfer fees at all...
I mean he is free to talk to any clubs 6 months prior to the expiration of his contract if I understand the Bosman ruling correctly....

At that price it would not surprise me if Bayern Munich signs him, they probably don't need him but they like sweeping up all German talent.
