Mesut Özil

I'm sure United would prefer him to see out his contract and sign for free next year. More so than our richer rivals who might rather secure his services now, even for a significant fee.

Taking advantage of Bosman is the sensible thing to do. Akinfeev and Ozil next year for free would be fantastic value...

Who on a Bosman?

If hes goes on a free transfer we wont get him, the likes of City, Madrid, Barcelona etc etc will all offer far higher wages than us.

When a player is in contract we have to compete on both transfer fee and wages. Take the fee out of the equation and its one less obstacle in our way.

We'd have to hope that Ozil has football not money as his number one priority, but at least we wouldn't have to worry about his club accepting a higher bid from the richer clubs...

It wouldn't surprise me to see him extend his contract just to allow Bremen to be on the receiving end of a big transfer kitty when a club decides to buy him

That would be a honorable thing to do but seeing as most footballers are more interested in their own good than club's good we don't see it happening very often. Better cash in on signing on fee, which is usually around £6m for top players when they move on free, based purely on Football Manager obviously, than basically hand that money to your club.

Allofs once again said there are no offers on the table and he expects Oezil to stay. They'll be very strong in attack this coming season, having Pizarro, Marin, Oezil and Arnautovic upfront.

Big transfer kitty? Rules us on then for the next few years then

Apparently he's off to Bayern.

Am really gutted that we've not gone in for him, we'll regret it with this one I fear.

Says who? The BILD is the best source when it comes to transfers within Germany's and they have nothing like that on their site. Instead, they have some quotes from Özil, who apparently wants to fulfill his contract. Players who leave for free get a huge signing bonus from their new clubs, so from his point of view, it makes sense to wait. However, he hasn't ruled out to extend his contract - he said he would think about it in the middle of the season.

There's nothing anywhere saying he's going to Bayern, in fact all teh latest news regarding the player says he's staying at Werder Bremen

Ozil to Bayern would fortunately make no sense as they already have a host of players that can play on the wings and through the middle.. I cannot see Bayern now get rid of Kroos, Robben, Ribery, Bastian etc..

that seems the most likely case, perhaps hes going to see how the CL run goes and how the team is building...if it looks like a poor season/no CL then perhaps he will start thinking of a move but if Bremen start bringing in players, stay near the top of the league and are doing well enough in the CL then he will extend his contract.

I'm probably just making that up but if we did indeed bid earlier I'm sure Sir Alex will have his eye on the situation

Werder Bremen’s general director Klaus Allofs told Bild: “We're keen to hold on to Mesut for a couple more seasons and we want him to sign a new deal with us,"

"However, if that turns out to be impossible, we might have to look at other solutions."

Özil did come out as well saying that he would like to see out his contract at Bremen; but, I reckon, should a decent offer come in for Mesut, Werder could sell.

If he isn't willing to sign a new deal, they'd be nuts not to sell him this summer. He's a good player, but he won't carry a team on his own, and his value will never have been higher after the WC. Getting £20m odd instead of having him for one more year seems a good deal to a club like Werder, IMHO.

I always think it's a bit shit when players do that. Why not sign a contract with a break clause, get a pay rise and go when you want to? I suppose it weakens your negotiation for the next contract. Owen at Liverpool was a classic shitbag.

It's also very dangerous. If you are risk averse, you wouldn't want to run your contract down and then get hit by a massive injury. In that case, suddenly you are out injured, don't have a contract to cover you and possibly out in limbo as clubs might not come in for you (at least in the same calibre as pre-injury).

Free agency/bosman is a proper right of any footballer, but it is not all benefits for the player if they run down contracts.

Also at his age, I doubt any club would sign him to a 3-4 year contract with a player option for one of those years as the player could break it and walk away for free even earlier.

If Bremen are willing to listen to offers, hopefully Gill and SAF can free up the funds and make a pitch. Granted every other continental giant, plus those feckers from Munich, will bid. My bet is Munich would get him regardless of the fee.

I don't think he will go to Munich given what the Bundesliga experts on here say and from what I know. There are too many players who play in a similar role to him at the club already. Ozil will be one great German player who won't play for Bayern in my opinion.

He's off to a big club so that's not City either.

I wouldn't rule Bayern out. It wouldn't be the first time they get a player they don't currently need. He's German and a potential superstar - they'll want him, and they probably wouldn't mind losing Ribery, say, to accommodate him.

Ribery and Robben will eventually move on and Ozil is the next great thing in Germany, so why wouldn't Bayern want him?

United didn't need Rooney with Ruud and Saha already in the squad (and this before they were crocked), but SAF saw long term potential.

Ribery has just extended his contract with Bayern and Robben is happy at Bayern after the nightmare with Real.

Bayern don't need him and so far, they haven't even bid or asked for him. They tend to like buying the best players in the league, but it's not like they are buying everyone. If there was any chance that Bayern are interested in him, the BILD would have already linked them to him just like they did with Neuer.

I've posted this before in this thread. But fecking hell, it's just so drool worthy...

Not since Rooney have I been so sure a specific player is so right for us at the given time.

Wait, where's Hargreaves? Wasnt he in it the first time?

Because contracts in football mean everything. Hargreaves extended his and a year later United were bidding. Ribery is still there because no club is mad enough to pay 50m plus for him, as overrated as he is.

Bayern would be quite stupid to not even monitor the Ozil situation, which I guarantee you they are watching.

Robben and Ribery are not about to move on. Ozil isn't bench material and they already have Toni Kroos on their bench. A player who is every bit as talented, possibly even more so than Ozil, and does the same things. I assure you. They have no need for him this summer.

United didn't need Rooney with Ruud and Saha already in the squad (and this before they were crocked), but SAF saw long term potential.
United needed Rooney. Have no doubt about that.

But we all know they aren't about to lose Ribery to anyone. So the idea seems far fecthed. This summer I will be very shocked if they went for Ozil with Kroos still on their books.

As much as Bayern need Ozil. Rooney was bought based on long term planning not immediate need. Same thing for Ozil if he went to Bayern.

As much as Rooney was long term planning. He was actually a better forward than any of our other strikers except Ruud. At Bayern Ozil isn't better than any of the starting 11 who play the roles he currently plays. & his competition on the bench, namely Kroos is arguably even superior to him too. Unless Bayern are letting go of a star they simply have no room for that kid.

Will be interesting to see how this situation pans out..

Based on what Ruud and Saha did at the tail end of 2004 once united, Rooney wasn't a necessity. He later turned out to be once both players were crocked in 2004/05 season. Rooney was a long term signing as he was considered the best English prospect in over a decade. And he was signed only after Newcastle made a lucrative bid. SAF was going to wait until the following summer to sign the player, showing just how much of a necessity he was in 2004.
