Ronaldo has more goals. And in my opinion Messi has declined a little bit. He's still world class but not as good as he was in 11/12.

To be fair, you can say the same for Ronaldo. They've both declined imo.

You're entitled to your opinion, and I can respect (even though I strongly disagree) with that.

Go back a few pages and you can find the annoying Messi fans thinking their opinion are FACHTS.

I mean you can't prove it either way :D

That's why the debate is fun and never ending.

Career trajectories are a bit strange. Messi has been subdued in the big CL games in the last 2 years (Atletico last year, PSG 1st leg and then Juve last week) but throughout his entire career he was a much better big game performer. Ronaldo's improved in that regard over the last 2.

When Ronaldo scores more than Messi, his contributions are downplayed as mere stats whereas Messi influences matches more. Ronaldo now scored 5 goals against Bayern, basically winning them the leg and contributed greatly to his team. Messi was partly at fault for that embarrassing first leg against PSG where he played so bad one would not think he was a professional footballer - great second leg though. Both players have had to adapt lately, but it will be interesting to see who does it best.

Ronaldo had a bit of a draught earlier this season. He's not scoring quite as many as he used to, but he is adapting to a new position, so having 31 goals is pretty remarkable considering.

Messi opened up the Juventus defence at least two or three times last week, which were not converted by his teammates (Iniesta in particular).

People can rate Ronaldo all they like, I just prefer Messi.

Well, is Ronaldo playing well in general play?

If all he has is goals in him now, and Messi is still outscoring him (despite not being the focal point of his attack), then how is there even a debate right now?

I have not denied that Ronaldo was having a subpar season until Feb/Mar

There's a brilliant mindset.

It comes off as ignorant, but I just think Messi's the better football player. Felt this way since 2008-2009. Not that there haven't been periods where Ronaldo's been better. But if you ask me, I think Messi's better.

Just my opinion.

Brilliant post - absolutely brilliant. I suppose no other great player has ever scored an offside goal? Sure, it was an obvious one when you freeze the image, but Alaba came running in behind him in a split second, so it must have been difficult to see for the linesman. Great finishing and chest control.

Keep your knickers on it was a joke.

I thought Messi played decent/well vs Juve. Certainly better than he did against PSG or Atleti. He created a golden chance for Iniesta who scoffed the finish(Buffon great save too). Was their most dangerous player.

But I do agree. Messi in the CL the past 2 seasons has kind of underwhelmed for his high standards in the big games. Will be interesting to see how he does tomorrow.

This Real team is incredibly well stacked and overall better than Barca which allows Ronaldo to be poaching around in the box and getting at least 4/5 chances every match.

Fair enough, but I just think your bilder bit in the last post was a little silly. If someone can never convince you, you have a pretty set view on things.

Since Cristiano joined Real Madrid, Messi's scored more goals and more frequently. Not disagreeing that he's declined a bit, and I completely agree Ronaldo's a more complete player in front of goal, but if Messi still outscores him (among some other external factors), it's a negligible gap at best or at worst in Messi's favour.

I think Messi is at a stage where he doesn't mind letting others have the plaudits. He was actively trying to ensure that Suárez was top goalscorer last season.

He basically picks up a few positions that alerts the oppositon to him, draws their attention and then lets Neymar and Suárez exploit the extra space.

So a hat trick and now he's suddenly the best despite being below par and scoring lesser than Messi? It's a pity the awards are given in similar way though because he'll probably win it for just these 5 goals alone.

Also that Barcelona midfield is not what it was, he's got more responsibility to contribute in the build-up even more so. Driving him further away from goal.

That's why it's impressive he's scored 40+ this season.

Messi has been poor in the PSG games but he was pretty good vs Juve. The ball to Iniesta was stunning and he also set Suarez through who also messed it up.

Yes, he's become more of a hybrid of Xavi and Robben during the Enrique era.

He both dicates the tempo and scores a large tally of goals.

Messi was playing centre mid against us last week, meanwhile Ronaldo is in the box for both of the matches for Bayern having the time of his life with being able to get on the end of chances.

Marcelo was easily the best player on the pitch but Ronaldo will get all the plaudits

I just find it a bit hilarious that the BPITW for this season is even up for a debate. Messi has been carrying an average Barca side and his a lot more goals than Ronaldo as well. He's been very influential for Barca this season.

It's so great to see the Messi brigade bring Real having the better team into the argument.

Remember that it didn't matter at all a few years ago when Messi played with one of the best midfields ever?

Remember when people criticized Ronaldo for not showing up in big matches? He's certainly done that more then Messi over the past 2 years. Though overall, Messi is the better player for me. In terms of goalscoring they're about the same, but Messi can be the best play maker around as well, doing things nobody else can do, so it's pretty easy for me.

:) I remember but avoid this thread like the plague.

Rival and bitter United fans will say Messi is better.

If Messi played for United before Barca and Ronaldo played for Madrid all his life, everyone would say Ronaldo was better.

Ronaldo is simply the best player I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Ronaldinho would be second. Messi is a wonderful classy player but entertainment wise, he is behind those two by quite a distance I would say.

Messi is better, Ronaldo has had a better past 2 games but Messi was much but over the first half of the season.

Messi can do everything. Ronaldo is heavy reliant on his team, whereas when Messi doesn't perform Barca look very average

Hasn't Messi still scored just as many goals as him this season with most being more individual moments anyway?

Tbh I was thinking this too just now. Messi has had less of an influence on big games for quite a while now, has been really inconsistent in big games.

So much wrong with this post, so little time.

Maybe some United fans don't have cool shades like others. I can't afford your red tinted ones.

The entertainment value is the best of all. Ronaldo has basically been a goalscoring machine for quite awhile now. He's not exactly entertaining, though. Asensio is more pleasing to watch.

I prefer messi but I genuinely think Ronaldo will be remembered as the better player 20-30 years from now. You just can't argue with those numbers.

Only 6 more goals, whilst Ronaldo has 3 more assists
