Messi wins his first international trophy against Brazil, in Brazil, on the 10th of July after Maradona passed away.

Ronaldo wins his first international trophy against France, in France, on the 10th of July after Eusébio passed away.

Congrats to Messi, deserves it for the career he's had. Came very close a lot of times and got unlucky, today luck went his way. That's the reward for being at the top level for so long.

That's freaky, weird career parallel. Two greats it's the fact they're both so good that makes it an interesting if often deluded debate. Fitting they have so much in common.

Not a great example. Ferguson won a European trophy with Aberdeen.

A far more difficult achievement than any other you’re likely to see.
And Messi with Argentina. Yoir argument is poor. Seedorf won championships with múltiple teams too. That makes him better than Messi?

My argument?

What is my argument? I made reference to Ferguson and Aberdeen what has Messi and Seedorf got to do with anything.

So Tata Martino is better than Ferguson.
That is one thing the CR7 50cents army will never dare to debate on, they have been yapping a lot on how Messi’s teammates are better than CR7’s, but has not once addressed how CR7’s managers and coaches are FAR better than messi. Lets do an off the head comparision.

CR7 was managed by legendary tier SAF for 6 years. He was also managed by semi legendary tier coaches Zidane and Mourinho. He was also managed by various tier 1/2 managers: Ancelotti, Allegri, Pelligrini.

Messi was managed by legendary tier Pep for 4 years. His next best managers are Luis Enrique and Frank Rikaard, whom I am not even sure if they are better than Sarri

His other skill set is clearly not as good as Messi now or in recent years. But I would say from around 06 to 14, they are indeed very close in every sense. Ronaldo used to be one of the best dribbler, best tricks and best runner with best long shot back in his days, remember. Maybe Messi was better in dribbling and ball control while Ronaldo was better in doing tricks and long shots etc. I’d even argue Ronaldo was more all rounded back in his days with more weapons in his pockets than anyone. Messi just being exceptional good in dribbling and playmaking.

I mean, it’s funny people tend to remember the past greats in their peak form which only last for around 2-5 years, wheteas for Ronaldo, people tend to just remember the older, poacher version of him more in recent years during his 30s, but not during his physical peak which last for 8+ years back in his 20s.

If we compare both players in their peak (06-14)

Ronaldo:

- finishing 10
- long shot 10
- heading 9
- passing 8
- vision 8
- playmaking 8
- crossing 9
- dribbling 9
- ball control 9
- technique 9
- tricks 10
- pace 10
- acceleration 9
- freekick 9
- stamina 9
- strength 9
- athleticism 10
- balance 8
- agility 9
- composure 9
- movement 9

Messi

- finishing 10
- long shot 8
- heading 7
- passing 9
- vision 10
- playmaking 10
- crossing 8
- dribbling 10
- ball control 10
- technique 10
- tricks 8
- pace 8
- acceleration 9
- freekick 8
- stamina 8
- strength 7
- athleticism 7
- balance 10
- agility 10
- composure 9
- movement 9

I’d say Messi has more 10s but Ronaldo has higher average stats and fewer weakness back in those days. Sure if we compare now Messi would look better overall.
I think Ronaldo is one of the top 5 of all time and the absolute best when it comes to off the ball movement. It's only that he is plays in an era of the absolute best on the ball.

That is not to say that Messi is rubbish off the ball or prime Ronaldo was poor on the ball. Ronaldo had one of the best ever long distance shot I've ever seen as well as incredible counter attacking ability, pace and power. His dribbling was decent too if not great (around 3 per game). As for Messi, you don't score so many without good off- the- ball movement. As Ronaldo himself said, it's like comparing a ferrari to a porsche; 2 very different players.

They probably have driven each other to new heights and without Messi, Ronaldo would probably not have achieved what he has and without Ronaldo, Messi would probably not have achieved what he has.

Football will never see this kind of rivalry again when the 2 legends retire.

Shouldn't this be the Eder vs Di Maria thread now?

Whilst I try not to get involved in this debate as it's honestly pointless as neither party is going to change their opinion, the one argument I've never understood is that Ronaldo is better because he's done it at different clubs. Ronaldo has joined Juventus and played for United, both who were the best teams in their leagues when he played for them. It's not like he joined Udinese and brought them a Serie A title. It would be no different to if Messi was allowed to leave by Barca last season and joined City who were interested in him. He would have slapped the league around with them, anyone who genuinely thinks otherwise is surely having a laugh.

I think the main difference between Euro 2016 win vs copa 2021 is that, Messi actually was the player of the tournament, the top scorer and top assister. Whereas Ronaldo actually had an underwhelming tournament as a whole.

Plus Messi played the semi and the final carrying a hamstring injury. Ronaldo had to come off the field in the final with injury.

In addition, this was poetic justice since Messi has been let down by his teammates several times in the past, to day they helped him.

I can't wait till these 2 bellends retire and then all the other sad bellends who argue about them might finally shut the feck up.

This is what I don’t get with the whole Messi Ronaldo thing. Both of them are incredible players but having to put down their fellow teammates like that is not right.
Argentina made it to the World Cup finals and Messi didn’t score a single goal during knockouts. Both of them are not the reasons why their country won the finals.

Messi has more goals outside the box than Ronaldo I'm pretty sure(or it's certainly very close either way) @RedRonaldo

So how'd you give Ronaldo a 10 for that, but Messi a 8?
Apparently I am thinking about the old days, Ronaldo used to score a lot of those 30-40 yards rockets. Remember those ratings are based on their younger peaks, not the current version.

Whilst I personally prefer Ronaldo, I’m really happy they’ve both won international tournaments. Although neither have won the World Cup, a lack of an international tournament trophy would’ve always been a stick to beat them with.

I am a huge fan of both and everyone seems to have their own preference on which one is the better, I am just glad to have seen two of the greatest players ever have long careers and be brilliant for all of it so far.

For me, Ronaldo is slightly better than Messi due to ronaldo winning at United, Real and Juventus while Messi only won with Barca
Do you also use the same logic when rating United players?

For example, do you rate Scholes and Giggs less because they won all their trophies with only one club?

This is great, now users like XxMessi4goatxX and IwishRonaldoWasmyMom can argue here forever.

*this post is a work of fiction any semblance to real users is coincidental.

Never understood the point of counting goals and trophies when comparing Messi and Ronaldo. A player who has scored 800 goals in his career is a great goalscorer, and so is a player who has scored 700 career goals. A player who have won 30 trophies has won a lot, and a player who has won 25 trophies has also won a lot. Having 5 extra trophies or 100 extra goals doesn't mean much when you are looking at numbers like 700 and 800.

I'm happy that Argentina won. Considering that they lost five consecutive finals including a World Cup final, this should soften the blow a bit. Have to say though, if you have followed Messi and Ronaldo since their breakthrough, I reckon it would take a lot of unhealthy mental gymnastics to not accept that Messi is better.

I mean Messi at his peak is a better football player than Ronaldo ever was and he is still better if you actually watch them play. Messi consistently does things that Ronaldo could never do consistently, and that gap has gotten even bigger over the years. The only argument Ronaldo could bring to the table is the amount of goals he has scored, trophies and awards he has won, yet Messi more than matches him in that regard while being capable of much more.

Sometimes I feel some try to rate Ronaldo more than Messi because they consider him the underdog in the conversation. Compared to Messi that is what he is, the underdog.

Congrats to Messi for finaling winning a Copa, perhaps they can go back to having it once every 4 years now.

Not that there was any debate about who's better player, but Copa win finally settles who has had a better career overall.

Hope for Cristiano fans to find some peace over time.

This. If anything, Messi is going through more adversity at Barca now than anything Ronaldo has faced at United, Real, or Juve. It will be interesting to see (assuming he re-signs) what he can help Barca achieve in the state they're currently in.

Haaland vs Mbappe coming up next.
This debate will never be as good because neither of them are (or will be) as great as Messi and Ronaldo. Also, those both are so interesting because of their very different approach at Football and the industry, while Haaland and Mbappe are not.
