Why are people shitting on Messi because of yesterday and today? Honestly, it's pathetic and childish.

How many times has Messi had a good weekend and Ronaldo didn't? Calm the feck down. The Argentinian players have done feck all other than just passing to Messi.

Unlike many of the people on this forum, I'm open for either to finish as the GOAT - who do I think it is at the moment? Messi. But if Ronaldo had a few more of those performances like yesterday and guides Portugal to a strong World Cup campaign then, I'll probably admit that Ronaldo will go down as the GOAT.

Some people on here enjoy the other failing than the other succeeding. It's pathetic.

No, they are not. Messi has been nowhere to be found in way too many big games in the last years in Europe. Ronaldo, on the contrary, has made wonders there.

Yet anyone who watches La LIGA weekly will tell you Messi has been better.

Messi has done shite all for ages - Messi hasn't played well for a team apart from at Barcelona whilst Ronaldo has done it in England, Spain, Portugal and the Portugal national team.

Ronaldo's hard work is more beneficial, more legendary than messi being born with a productive growth deficit.

Ronaldo has been goat without competition for a good 3-4 years now.

Don't you think we should judge them over their entire careers, not just the last few years?

Messi at his peak was the better player. Ronaldo is better currently imo.
In your opiniin has Ronaldo been the better player for a longer period than Messi was at his peak?

Before people go overboard... 4 years ago, Portugal got embarrassed in the group stage while Messi was player of the tournament and made the final. Like I keep saying, theres literally the same examples both for and against each player at different stages in their careers. Impossible to separate them.

Though on that note... Messi is trash at penalties

Just seen in a tweet that Messi has only scored 4 goals in 16 matches in World Cup.

Mess of a performance.

Any player can have a bad game. The problem with Messi goes deeper though. He moves like a retired player. Giggs at 40 would look more dynamic than Messi.

Still hope that he will have a good WC because it would be sad if he continues to perform like that.

There isn't a more annoying fan base than that of Messi's. Can't wait for more excuses.

Both sides have pathetic die-hards.

What does this have to do with anything? The first part doesn't even make sense.

There is little doubt about that for me
Messi in 2010/11 and 2011/2012 was a level that Ronaldo has never reached though. 91 goals in a calendar year. Ronaldo's had the big moments for longer and ultimately has achieved more so far though. Wouldnt count against either being at the next world cup though.

Close, I guess. Ronaldo was better until 2008-2009 season. Since then, Messi was better until 12-13 season. Since then Ronaldo has been better bar in the treble season.

So, I guess that Ronaldo has been the better player for most of the time, but in that spell 2008/2009 season up and including 2011/2012 season, the difference in quality between them has been arguably bigger than in any season where Ronaldo has been the better player.

So, Ronaldo has the longevity argument, but Messi had a (significantly) higher peak.

This is the thing. There are arguments for both. But the bickering after every game is childish and pointless.

He has 5 goals in the world cup. Ronaldo has 6 (after he scored 3 yesterday). Neither have lit it up really over the years.

That's because it's their system to do so! They don't need to do that and they have more than enough quality on the pitch to not do that.

They have Dybala on the bench because Messi isn't adaptable enough to be able to play with both... It's ridiculous.

I wrote the same thing here before the game even started and I have been saying the same for ages so it has nothing to do with today but it's obvious to anyone following Argentina that their system is their biggest problem and the system is solely around getting the best out of Messi by letting him have the ball as often as possible. They defer things to Messi when they don't need to...

I disagreed with a few things but @totaalvoetbal's post a few pages ago pretty much summed it up.

Yes, I would agree with that but that's 6-8 years ago now. It seems like a lifetime ago. Ronaldo is much stronger mentally and that is allowing him today to be better than Messi in the biggest games.

I think that's a fair assessment

Ehmm.. Sounds like someone didn't score any today.

I agree with what you're saying but Ronaldo was on one knee in 2014, shouldn't have even played in that World Cup and his knees have been gone ever since.

His start to the Euros in 2016 would have been a better comparison.

Only when it matters most.

His conversion rate is around 77% which is not that bad. Ronaldo's is 84.5% which is better, but the gap is not that big as the impression.

Ronaldo is more reliable when it matters though. On his early days, he lost some important pens (against Barca, Chelsea and Bayern), but nowadays he rarely loses an important penalty.

I still think messi edges it in terms of performances over their whole careers, however, the fire hasn't gone from ronaldo yet, and I just don't see it in messi anymore.

He was their best player if he scored that penalty ffs

Ronaldo has also scored 3 in about 13 or 14 games before Spain.

Yeah. For me, if someone asks who was the best player of all time in terms of pure peak level, Messi wins because of that period. If its who is the greatest of all time in terms of the big moments, being the most influential in winning things overall in their careers, then its Ronaldo. Maybe if you separate greatest from best, Messi would be best, and Ronaldo the greatest as it stands (cant judge pele or Maradona, way before my time). It's really hard to separate them, but what Ronaldo has achieved the past 5 years is remarkable and no matter what either do, itll be them 2 as the top 2 and an even split imo. One of them winning the world cup would probably decide it in their direction, but that's hard to do with this Argentina or Portugal despite portugal actually being a decent side.

The one that he totally didn't deserve. He assisted and scored feck all, after the group stage.

Is this even close anymore? Ronnie all day long, for me.
The poll on a united forum still edges it for Messi. That should tell you everything. Other than Real Madrid, Man United and some Portuguese forums the polls aren't even close. Messi wins by far. Although it is difficult to deny Ronaldo had a better few last years.

Best player? And the most wasteful too. How many sloppy passes did he make? How many times was he dispossessed? It was a poor performance for his standards.
