He didn't score or assist outside of group stage. In fact, they won one of the games from an own goal, and one other with Higuain creating everything by himself. And then defeated Holland in pens without scoring a goal.

He was excellent in groups though, but not so much after that. So, hardly 'he dragged them' to the finals.

I'm guessing you missed the RO16 vs Switzerland then?

Didn't assist -> Assists Di maria in R16

Higuain creating everything -> His goal starts with Messi keeping the ball vs two players, Higuain scores with one touch

So Argentina have better players. And Sampaoli is actually better (or at the very least) than Portugal's manager. I mean, he actually won Copa America with Chile defeating in the finals, you know, Argentina and Messi.

Hmm, there is only one other variable in the equation (not counting luck).

Sampaoli may indeed be a better manager but from what I've read about both him and Argentina before this tournament this team isn't suited to his style of play at all. Too many old players incapable of doing what he ideally wants them to, resulting in compromises in his approach, formation changes and generally underwhelming performances. Or so said the analysis I've read at least.

Whereas Portugal (despite having lesser players) seem like a coherent, well drilled side, even if there manager is actually less talented than Sampaoli generally.

You seem to be an expert in this football thing.

Perhaps and for real, if ARgentina had Eder instead of Higuain, Messi would have 1 WC and two Copa Americas at the moment. And this is way more probable.
If Argentina didn’t have Higuain, they probably didn’t beat Belgium in the QF

I stand corrected about Switzerland.

Higuain scored a good one touch goal which most players wouldn't and it wasn't a Messi assist. Minutes later he created himself a chance where he hit the bar.

If you prefer Pepe, Fonte, William, Quaresma etc over Argentinas lot then you're mental.
Absolutely mental.

Portugal play shit on the stick football and just hope that Ronaldo saves the day while they are concentrated in defense.

Sampaoli is a better manager, Argentina have better player. Ronaldo for Portugal however is a better player than Messi for Argentina. Ronaldo is quite good at motivating others, while Messi is a sulker when things don't go right.

The mentality is night and day.
Absolutely. People can derisively call him Penaldo all they want, but the fact is that when he needs to step up and score, like the final penalty of the CL final shootout vs. Atletico or the one against Juve this year or the one yesterday, he just scores as if it's the easiest thing in the world.

In terms of mindset, temperament and mentality in high-pressure situations there isn't a player in the world I would pick over him. Even if I include all other sports it's a tough ask to find his equal in that regard.

I think we should put this discussion to bed. Ronaldo perform when it matters , carried his team , already success in both EPL & La liga . Meanwhile I doubt Messi can do it at wet cold night Stoke. He can't even score a pen against part-time filmmaker :lol:

In a few minutes @IFC 1905 will post that Argentina didn't defeat Island cause Island had better players, Sigurdsson had more help than Messi, and if Finnobagson played for Argentina instead of Aguero, then maybe Argentina would have won.

The delusion is unprecedented.

Honestly, watching this Argentina team, I'm not sure they're better at all.

Portugal do exactly what you say but they do it well and they stick to their roles and it works. That's how they won Euro 2016.

Argentina look like none of the players have had a team talk or have ever played with each other.

All I can say for this (and it's only through watching Argentina today) is that you only have to look at England's 'golden generation'.

They had brilliant players that just couldn't play together at all. Argentina are the same.

Portugal are seemingly a team unit + Ronaldo. They defend well as a block and then hope that Ronaldo can do something. Argentina can't even defend properly.

Ronaldo has an argument now, yes, but using mentality as a reason is a bit of a stretch. Ronaldo has been invisible in countless big games, missed penalties in others. Now that Messi is doing that doesn't meant judging them on a game to game basis is right. Ronaldo can be a stroppy sulky bitch just as much as Messi can.

I'm not arguing with any of the bold though.

I'm saying that, despite all that, Argentina clearly don't function as well as they should. Which is why they wouldn't be in this world cup if it wasn't for Messi dragging them through qualifying, by all accounts. Whereas you'd expect Portugal to be as reliant on Ronaldo as they are given they have a less talented side, yet the group coherence was good enough for them to win the Euros. Their relative underperformance/overperformance goes beyond Messi and Ronaldo.

Oh yeah, I agree on that. They are the England of South America when it comes to football, since Maradona retired.

But an inspirational leader (who also happens to be one of the GOATs), should have managed to fix some of those things. Instead, he vetoes what is probably their second best player to not come in the world cup.

And Sampaoli is a master tactician. He won Copa America with Chile and almost defeated Brazil in the last world cup.

There isn't a more annoying fan base than that of Messi's. Can't wait for more excuses.

As someone who is a little more on the Ronaldo side, I can safely say both fanbases can be very extreme.

Every player has had bad big matches. Especially if they played big matches as often as Messi and Ron.

Just that it happens much more often to Messi than to Ronaldo. Look, every time that Barcelona hasn't won UCL, Messi has really underperformed. In the finals for Argie, as far as I can remember, Messi has been quite annonymous (bar in 2015), and in 2016 missed the pen there.

Spent hours here rebutting terrible arguments and completely stupid statements by people pretending to be unbiased that I don’t feel like leaving when they’ve so blatantly and hilariously been proven wrong

Of course you don’t. I especially like how you say that I’m wrong about people basing or reaffirming their opinion on one game or one goal and then when I ask you to justify it you don’t even reply. I didn’t know that saying “na huh” and then running away was considered as blatantly and hilariously proving someone wrong.

Are you sure about that, or is another "misconception" you have like Messi not assisting past group stage in the 14' WC?

Yup can't agree with this more. You only had to look at him against Roma, he's just not the stand up and be counted type when the chips are really down and his life depends on it. He's singlehandedly won Barça the title last year by battering shite teams every week but come the hard times he was nowhere to be found.

And the second part is what I hate about Messi fans. Clearly he's a manipulating power hungry little bitch and yet he's apparently an angel because Ronaldo is a prick on the field and everyone loves to hate him. Messi is every bit as bad.

Without question. Ronaldo is now competing because Messi level dropped. You didn’t hear any of these clowns when Messie was winning league after league and CL’s and ballandors and outscoring Ronaldo but hey would argue that stats don’t mean anything but apparently now they have meaning.

Footballing style for me goes to Messi, just my taste in terms of dribbling and movement alongside so many other aspects.

Absolutely. Ronaldo will never reach Messi's top level, and even after Messi's relative decline in recent years they're still more or less on par in terms of individual performances.

As someone who doesn't care much about Messi vs Ronaldo, I would say if Ronaldo has a better mentality. He's an egomaniac but a true winner, He wants to win even if He has to do it against all odds. Critics don't really matter to him. In fact, if it's all about him He'll enjoy it much more, He loves Challenges.

Messi is different.. I mean He almost "retired" from Argentina NT just because They kept failing and people started to write unpleasant stuffs about him and the team. It looks like the national team is a burden to him than a challenge. But it's still early days in World Cup, We'll see if He can change my opinion.

Oh, and before I get accused of being a Ronaldo fanboy, and hating Messi, in 2012 when @Cheesy created the thread on the best players of all time, I had Messi 1st, and Ronaldo 6th.

https://www.redcafe.net/threads/redcafes-top-50-footballers-of-all-time.359988/page-3

1. Messi
2. Maradona
3. Cruyff
4. Pele
5. Zidane
6. C.Ronaldo
7. Fat Ronaldo
8. Beckenbauer
9. Di Stefano
10. Platini

No idea why I had Pele that low, and why I had Luis Ronaldo and Zidane in top 10.

And in 2016, when we voted on best current player in the world, I had Suarez 1st (Ronaldo second, Messi third)

https://www.redcafe.net/threads/redcafes-best-players-in-the-world-voting.418079/

1. Suarez
2. Ronaldo
3. Messi
4. Griezmann
5. Muller
6. Neymar
7. Lewandowski
8. Ibrahimovic
9. Godin
10. Pogba

So there, I am totally unbiased

No, they are not. Messi has been nowhere to be found in way too many big games in the last years in Europe. Ronaldo, on the contrary, has made wonders there.

Missed penalty and a gazillion chances against Chelsea in 2012, unable to score in 2010 against Inter (right) despite playing with one player more, anonymous against Bayern in 2013, meh against Atletico when eliminated, really bad against Roma, even worse against Juve.

Anonymous in the first final against Brazil, don't remember doing much against Uruguay in that semi-final but remember scoring an excellent penalty in shootout, didn't do much against Germany, good game against Chile in the first final, created 2 excellent chances, meh and lost a pen in the last final.

He was out of this world against us in 2011 though, and quite good in 2009.
