That's the problem with judging players based on their teams' performances. People who criticize Messi are no better than those who said Cristiano didn't shone on the big stage when Real Madrid was the inferior team.

IMO it is a shame that Messi's last few years are wasted in such mediocre squads (and possibly coaching). This team looks nothing like the Barcelona in the Guardiola years, sadly.

If Ronaldo wins a thrid CL title in a row that will be that. Only Messi winning the WC with Argentina could help him but it is not likely to happen. Otamendi is their first choice CB:
 
It's amusing how the claims that this is now 'over' fluctuate from performance to performance. Can we not at least will until they retire or feck off to the MLS? There's a world cup coming up (maybe 2), and at least 4/5 more CL campaigns for both.

I'd say the difference between how this could happen to Barca and not Madrid is the fact that Madrid have a significantly better midfield and defence who just wouldn't allow it to happen. Modric, Kroos and Casemiro is so, so much better than the shite Barca have in there that it's unbelievable.

Or, you know, Barca collapsing and conceding 3 goals is entirely down to one guy who plays at the opposite end of the pitch.

"Please stop the ignorance" is an absolute fecking quality line. Alanis should have used that one back in the day.

A player who is deemed the GOAT should have something to say about that. And its funny you are comparing teams when BARCA are current invisibles in la liga while Madrid are 3rd give me a break.

When Barcelona are successful it's because they have a good team who Messi needs to play well.

If Ronaldo continues to destroy the best sides in Europe like he did Juve then he deserves it. If Salah wins the CL for Liverpool then he deserves it.

Messi is a passenger in many games and doesn't help defensively. In most games they get away with it but when it comes to the last 8 in the CL, Barca's record isn't good, is it?

Wow. I get that sometimes the team can disappoint you but mediocre? This Barcelona squad has been world class for years. Just because they are not the best in a generation doesn't mean they are still a very good squad.

Let's also not forget Ronaldo won the Euro's with Portugal which he doesn't even get credit for on here. Let's not blame the team for poor performances. If you're gonna blame the so called crap team for the loses will you also credit the team and not Messi for the wins (which I think is ridiculous because despite Xavi/Iniesta and all Messi deserves full credit for that glorious run)

Madrid are 3rd because they had a bad start and put all their eggs in the CL basket. That is a fact and is proven as such with Zidane taking Ronaldo off after an hour in a fecking Madrid derby!

Only a mentalist would honestly think Barca's team is better than Madrid's.

Messi's the only one who has a bunch of people claiming he has the ability to make the teammates around him better though... so shouldn't he be judged harshly when those teammates don't perform? Or does that ability only work when they play well?

I agree with you btw (not on the mediocre part, Barcelona are far from mediocre), just making a point.

That's a ridiculous point, they are the best team in the world due to him. You need to look at how lost Madrid were in the league early doors when Ronaldo couldn't buy a goal.

PSG were favorites for their tie vs Real and look what happened when Ronaldo got going. Same thing against Juventus too. They don't win any of the 3 CL in past 4 years if they didn't have a fit Ronaldo for the knock out stages.

Messi hasn't had a Messi type game in Europe since Boateng / Bayern maybe?
Add in his dry streak v Madrid over that time ( 1 goal in 10 before this season or something) and you have to wonder if top sides have worked him out so to speak.

This is the thing about the staunch Messi supporters I simply don't understand. They are unwilling to accept ANY criticism of Messi. He is like the perfect football for them. It's just banging your head against the wall trying to argue.

I would almost guarantee my home even my girlfriend to everyone in the CAF so they all get a turn that is Ronaldo team let go of a 3 goals lead and put his country he would be CRUCIFIED. Which is exactly why I'm asking why he's getting blamed for tonight or why suddenly it's proof Ronaldo is better.

For a top level team like them their midfield is absolutely woeful in comparison to the other teams around their level.

There are players more similar to Ronaldo than there are to Messi. However, RM has not been good this season with a Ronaldo out of form. Previously, Ronaldo has not really been much out of form, and he really has dragged them through two CL campaings now. That certainly proves his worth to the team. Suggesting that Ronaldo is not vital to RM's success is just as naive as saying Messi isn't to Barcelona.

He isn't blamed for the defeat, he isn't as efficient as Ronado when it comes to the last games in the CL, i.e. to the biggest games. Ronaldo's record is far superior.

Neither Messi or Ronaldo are playing at the level they played in 2010 or 2014. Still, in 2010 even Forlan finished above Ronaldo and in 2014 Neuer was 0.02% away from finishing above Messi. It's the journalists vote now, the WC will be the main decider. If Messi or Neymar have a great tournament and Ronaldo doesn't, then Ronaldo won't be the favourite.
