Messi is as good as a goaslscorer as CR but he is so much better as a player that this thread is almost absurd.

By the way, for the "Champions League is the ultimate and harder competition where players test themselves against the best, not Rayo Vallecano", what do you think of what ZZ said today?

"But it has no explanation. It makes me more excited to win the league, that is the hardest thing and I also think that is what the players want."
Do you think more people remember Di Stefano and the 5 ECs? or the Real team who won La Liga from 86-90?

Typical arrogant Messi fan answer. Can't even entertain that it's a pretty close call between the pair of them.

Is there even a single Real Madrid fan in the whole world who would take 2 league titles above 1 CL?

Who's bigger? Juve or Milan?

No, Messi's better record has everything to do with the period between 2009-2011 where he played for the bestest team in the world ever ever under St Pep.

You don't think anyone said more than Ronaldo? The post I quoted for that reply was exactly someone implying Modric has been the key player for Real's CL wins.

The reason Ronaldo didn't make the final in 2011 was because of the Scandal of Bernabeu, you know, the one where the ref sent of Pepe for NOT touching Alves?

You could learn the rules of the sport before talking about them.

https://www.fifa.com/mm/document/afdeveloping/refereeing/law_12_fouls_misconduct_en_47379.pdf

"Using excessive force" means that the player has far exceeded the necessary use of force and is in danger of injuring his opponent:
- a player who uses excessive force shall be sent off

Now if you look at the action at normal speed, it doesn't even matter if Pepe touches Pepe or not, if the sound comes from him kicking Alves or Alves kicking the ball, or missing frames don't tell the whole story and Alves has the best legs in the history of the game to recoil his leg like a shotgun, Pepe uses excessive force and Alves is in danger of being injured, that's the end of the story.

Keep covering your arguments in dirt to attack Messi's merits, you're only exposing yourself.

What matters was Alves' reaction coming straight out of the Barca playbook.

He wasn't arrogant at all, Messi is a significantly better playmaker, they are a close goal in terms of goal scoring for sure.

Can't argue that it requires more consistency day to day, but it's hard to believe that the players (Cristiano for sure) would prefer to win it over CL.

No way he wins the Ballon D'ors without the CL, so why would he prefer it?

Do you think more people remember Di Stefano and the 5 ECs? or the Real team who won La Liga from 86-90?

The first one, problem is Di Stefano also won 8 league titles in 10 seasons with Real Madrid too, which is inclusive to his legacy, not exclusive like Butragueño not winning a single UCL.

But on the same line, I can tell you that here in Spain, the 5 league Real Madrid has a bigger status than the 79/80 Nottingham Forest.

He didn't say "playmaker", he said "player" which is at the very core of this thread's discussion.

How about compared to Milan 89-90?

At least they know about Nottingham Forest. In England most fans don't even know about the 5 league Real Madrid.

So if you get barely grazed by a bullet and fall to the ground covering your face, you're a worse human being than the guy who shot you? Good to know.

And I hate Alves antics, but making him the bad guy in that situation is just hilarious. Like when you took away Leo's merit in his solo goal that he just dribbled and scored past 4 Real Madrid players because Pepe was sent off .

The Messi brigade having a good time due to some cowardly mod who won't even admit to doing it. :wenger:

I’m going to locate you in Hong Kong one day and throw things at you until you stop using all these childish names. Yes I’m aware how hypocritical a thing that is to do.

Comparing a contact sport to bullets flying?

You do realize Pepe's exact role was to stop that kind of run? His sending off completely ruined their shape.

It's fine for you to laugh at my very insulting tagline, but you get all upset when I use the term Messi brigade?!

It’s probably the thing that annoys me the most on the entire caf

A very educated poster with wumming skills beyond belief but I just want to cut that shit out of your vocabulary

What's wrong with "Messi brigade"? I'll happily admit to being a part of the "Ronaldo brigade" at the Caf

Seems a tad condescending to want to "cut that shit" out of his vocabulary.

We all agreed years ago not you use the word:

fanboi

Otherwise, everything goes.

Ronaldo and Messi play similar roles for their teams - scoring / assisting goals is their main task. It is therefore obvious that people prioritize these numbers when discussing the players, particularly those that support Ronaldo, as he's ahead on these. I'd always (as a manager) pick the player that directly contributes to a win every time, over a player that "passes the eye test" in terms of being aesthetically pleasing.

Ronaldo scores more, assists more and delivers more on the biggest stage. He has single-handedly demolished the likes of Juve, Bayern and PSG (in just the last 3 seasons alone) and is just a level above anyone when it comes to the CL and the latter stages in particular. This is no slight on Messi but just something that is obvious if you look at the numbers. As a consultant, I let the numbers (data) do the talking - as this is the best way to ensure that bias and emotion doesn't colour things. If you add subjective details, you could also say that Messi's only period of being better on statistics (head to head in particular) coincided with the period when Ronaldo's Real team was far inferior to Messi's Barca.

In summary, the 'eye test' is frankly meaningless when looking at the scorers. It may be one way of assessing players in different positions or when looking at DMs / CBs, but you just can't make a case for placing it above hard numbers when looking at forwards.

It's not about being aestethically pleasing or looking at scorers, it's about who is the better footballer. Only looking at stats is like going to a resturant and only looking at the menu to decide which meal tastes the best.

I’m saying it in a friendly way. Not in a 6ft2, 200lbs, highly trained fighter with an urge to visit Hong Kong kind of way

That one gets me much more to be fair

Can we at least have it so that the word to describe their corner starts with R and M? Maybe Messi’s mates and ronaldo Romantics. Brigade and cult jusy aren’t doing it for me

Yeah, known because they were part of the joke "You have 1 EC less than Nottingham Forest" to mess with Barcelona, no one would tell you a single player from that squad, surely more people know Butragueño in England than Robertson in Spain.

That's a question for the Serie A thread, another war in itself bigger than the Leo vs Cristiano

How about compared to Milan 89-90?

That's trickier, because that Milan is usually linked in time with Capello's era with 3 extra leagues and another EC. And still Sacchi represents a change in the concept of how football should be played in the 90's, that team legacy was beyond their silverware.

You have the other example, Real Madrid won 3 UCL titles from 98 to 02, yet no one regards them as an iconic team of football because they didn't break with stablished concepts, they weren't really fun to watch, and never managed to win League + UCL in the same season, also not a single Spanish Cup, ask between Madridistas of all ages and they'd be torn choosing between Lorenzo Sanz's Real Madrid and La Quita del Buitre.

A squad needs a little more than titles to cement a legacy that holds to the biggest teams ever. It's not that simple.

I was open to changing to "Followers of St Lionel" at one point.

But @oneniltothearsenal and his extremely funny mod-pal has left me in a very grumpy mood.

That Milan was as much linked to the Capello side and 94 CL as the Pep Barca linked to the 06 version. Very very little in it.

One of the main reason why that Milan side is so fondly remembered (other than that legendary defense), was the fact they were the last team to retain it till last year.

As for 98-02 RM, it's true they're not rated that highly at all, they did lose to Kiev one year, didn't they?

You realize there's rules in football so there's a limit in what you can do to stop another player, based on safeguarding his physical integrity?.

It's always the same with Real Madrid and red cards, Figo tackles Puyol like a Lamborghini stomping into a wall "Well, he really didn't hit him with all the foot, not a red", Ramos tackles Leo with his foot at knee level, full steam "well, Leo dodged it, he's not even injured, why the red card?".

Refs sanction actions and intent, Pepe could face that situation without putting Alves in danger, he didn't therefore he deserves to be out, and end of all, it doesn't take away from Barcelona beating Real Madrid or Leo dribbling past 4 defenders from midfield to score a golazo at a UCL SF clasico.

Yes, indeed, 1 each in the 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s. 4 in the last decade with the top clubs increasingly dominating everything.

We've already been over Real Madrid not paying much attention to the CDR.

No one is denying the Treble is much harder than one CL. If retaining the CL was easy, how come Messi hasn't been able to do it? Not even under St Pep with Xaviesta at their peak in the bestest team ever ever?

He didn't say that it was easy to retain.. I've already tried to explain to you why it's so difficult to win back-to-back CL's but judging from your reply I guess you didn't listen. Any competition where you can get eliminated by losing one single game (or not even that, a high scoring draw at home is enough sometimes) or losing a penalty shootout is extremely hard to win every year. It's more than obvious that you know this but you still pretend that you don't just so you can knock Barca/Messi for it.

I also seems as if you are getting more and more childish by the minute. Try to debate like an adult for a while and maybe people will actually start to respect your opinion.

I’m sure it’s the same mod pal who messed with the names in the poll.
I doubted.

It's always the same with Barca, never their fault:

Ignore the Chinese, the footage is kind of fun.

Well, the retaining thing was more because of the change in number of teams than anything else imo.

They did indeed lose to Kyiv, some Andriy guy put 3 goals on them (two at the Bernabeu), and then Kyiv lost vs Bayern 3-4 in the aggregated, Real got eliminated by Bayern (winners) the other season, really not a lot of shame in those runs.

The problem that team had is that they ended 4th, 2nd (11 points behind Barcelona), 5th and 3rd behind Valencia and Deportivo in those seasons, almost the same hex that this squad carry, with only one league title, ending 3rd in 14' and their current league form.

@Cal?

Just out of interest, where would you play ronaldo if you were picking an all time XI and in what formation?
