Messi lifting the World Cup in that robe

I wonder if that’s why he ended up wearing what looked like a negligée?

It was weird as feck anyway. And pointing this out is obviously not racist. I mean, come on…
I loved it, great but of “what the feck is going on!?” To end the ceremony on. They should make a thing of it, next winner should have to wear stockings when they accept the award.

How can you trust them. Human rights organisations created by the west to create an agenda. That is the demonisation of Muslim countries. I’m glad you’re having a good time hating Muslims.

I was there talking to locals. Talking to gays. You’re here behind a computer screen losing your shit.

Yes, human rights organisations are the real villains here.

More of a black lace curtain than a robe. I might be showing my ignorance here but are these robes always see through? Or was it some weird compromise to make this Argentina shirt still visible? Because it looked weird as feck. The WC winning captain in a gauzy negligée.

Sport and lewd imagery. Together at last, and potentially unstoppable.

The robe wasn't even the main Problem, Infantino trying to squeeze his ugly mug into every picture trying to walk down the "isle" with Messi was the real travesty ruining this moment, what an absolute knob jockey.

The man is a fool! Messi was trying to get away from him as well and he just hung around like a bad smell

With sneakers!

What an absolute nob. Wear some dress shoes ffs.

This 100%

feck off Gianni, nobody gives a shit about you

I'm sure Qatari wasn't the only one that did this in world cup history. People just love to complain

Fittingly pathetic end to this pathetic event.

At least the football held up to what a wc should be in the final. If nothing else did.

Yes they're see through.

I mean their amir was basically wearing one when he put that on Messi.

There are around 5000 legitimate issues with the Qatar world cup. That winner's robe of honor is not one of them.

This is what we call a mask off moment.

It was the emporers new clothes, only really clever people could see it's true beauty.

Overwhelmingly strong accidental Partridge vibes.

Exactly right. Just sell off football heritage one iconic moment at a time. We don’t need sanctity of sport. Greenwashing is just how it is now. If we’re honest, they all should have got one.

Pisspot behaviour from a weird country.

Losing your shit over a robe. UK and Europe have done so much to tarnish the image of football around the world, it's actually pleasing to see a country do it right. If anything, they have restored an element of respect long gone in these hooligan filled states.

For my friends who don’t know the Bisht

There has been quite a bit of online commentary, some of it quite derogatory, regarding the black robe that Lionel Messi wore prior to accepting the World Cup. For context, I wanted to explain its significance.

The garment is called a ‘bisht’ and it is an outer garment worn in predominantly Arab countries. The name is derived from the Akkadian word ‘bishtu’ which means ‘nobility’ or ‘prestige’.

This garment is considered a symbol of great honour. It’s a status symbol amongst royalty, the wealthy and those with high social rank, much like a cross between ceremonial graduation robes or, in Western terms, wearing a black tuxedo at a special occasion.

When it’s the Emir of a country literally gifting you the bisht, putting it on you with his own hands, it’s the highest honour that can be bestowed upon that civilian. It has nothing to do with religion at all.

Messi may not have understood what it meant when he graciously wore it, but it was the Qatari way of recognising him for the GOAT that he is.

This is bonkers. I've seen quite few of these types of opinions from people who went. You can go and have a good time without coming back and making truly appalling statements like this.

I know some are being a bit defensive over their choice to go, this posts reeks of that, maybe you don't mean it to, but that's how it comes across.

Actually where was all the outrage when Cafu lifted it in that glittering kimono?

Where were you when Cannavaro had to squeeze into lederhosen?

I can't remember anyone complaining about Cassillas in that tulip like vuvuzela.

Nor when Lahm was donning that copa cabana thong.

But now suddenly? Hypocrites!

Only checked the first one but I see no kimono?

I didn't think that would need to be labeled as sarcasm. I was wrong in thinking the idea of Lahm lifting it in a thong would make it clear enough :nervous:
Indeed. Should have gone with Müller to make people frantically google

The king of Qatar can don the bshit on me anytime! It will mean I am finally worthy of something

   at the entire post!

The Emir will only do it if you win the table tennis Olympic gold for Qatar I'm sorry

Are we going to criticise the England next year when random players from around the world are made to wear the poppy that means absolutely nothing to them?

I mean, the robe thing was funny, but I don't think it's even discussed that much anywhere except here, and we all know the reason. Same reason that not being allowed drinking alcohol was discussed more than this year terrible organisation of CL finals where many people were denied watching the game despite paying for the ticket. But yeah, problems that happen in Muslim countries are far more important than the one we see in Europe, even if they are sometimes bigger.

No one is made to wear the poppy though?

I’m not denying that there have been islamophobic racists who’ve looked for things to criticise this World Cup over, and I’ve no doubt that there’d have been critics of this gesture purely off the back of it being a Middle Eastern garment.

Those idiots aside though, I think the majority of people criticising it are merely pointing out that the moment was Lionel Messi lifting the World Cup that had to that point evaded him, in the iconic blue and white stripes of Argentina, the winners of the tournament.

I don’t think anyone would’ve had a problem with it being gifted to Messi at any other point in the aftermath of the final whistle, the way in which it was shoehorned into Argentina and Messi’s big moment did come across as insincere though.

It was on the 8 o clock news in The Netherlands and there was some outrage in Argentina since it takes away from the iconic lifting the trophy photo which you do in your teams jersey instead of a see through apron.

Personally think it's a silly thing to get worked up abouy, but eh.

Imagine the scene. 2030, Wembley, France has just won the World Cup. Kylian Mbappé steps forward to receive the trophy when Charles suddenly stabs him in the chest with a poppy. I think people would talk about it for a bit.
