Messi lifting the World Cup in that robe

This. Disgusting regime who’ve shown themselves up repeatedly over the entire tournament.

Hopefully conversation continues now on the glaring issues shown during this WC.

Nah it's over. Nobody will really care anymore.

Might be a mini event annually over the next 10 years or so every time the F1 race comes around.

Or a bigger one again when they get the olympics.

if you see the Emir and Qatar as some sort of guy/country worthy looking up to, then yes.

My bet is you probably just think the picture is aesthatically pleasing.

I don't think any Monarch or President is worth aspiring to.

But its a ceremony in itself

They wouldn't have put Harry Kane in that robe. I think it's clear and obvious why some people are completely rattled by it.

The man himself seemed pretty willing, and for me that's where the conversation ends.

What's the big deal here? It's a symbol of honor as I understand it. What is wrong with the host nation honoring the winner and best player of the tournament in a way that is traditional for them? I will be the first to condemn Qatar for how they got the World Cup, how they have prepared for it and ran it, but this seems like such a minor thing. This is an example of legitimate criticism turning into meaningless resentment of Arab culture.

On a lighter note, it reminded me of this:

Sort of robe you wear when you stay in a decent hotel and stomp about the room wearing it with a cup of tea as you feel you have to get your monies worth.

I really dislike the way people are framing any critique of this as xenophobia. It's pretty fecking pathetic and says a lot about the people doing it.

This was weird, he was also on the pitch after the match which I can't remember happening ever for any other country. The players don't look too thrilled either.

I find it funny that people are that bothered about the robe. I wouldn't have cared if Harold Kane wore it.

Yeah, they look they dont really care for him nor the things he say. Politicians putting themselves under the light shocker.

The robe was funny to be fair. They obviously wanted to do something traditional but FIFA didn't want them to cover the shirt while doing the closing ceremony, and what they actually got was something my Mrs only wears in the bedroom and Martinez pretending his trophy was his dick.

My personal highlight was Macron refusing to let go of Mbappe's head while Mbappe had the biggest leave-me-alone-you-dumb-cnut face of all time.

Who cares about the silly robe. That's probably a cultural thing.

Yeah that was. Like. Leave him alone, he's ignoring you.

Messi’s black cloak is called a 'Beshth'. Arabian warriors wore it after a victory. It’s also worn by the royal family. King of Qatar honoured Messi as a sign of respect. Signifying Messi as a warrior who won for his country Argentina.

Quick google search will show you Kaka, Zidane, Iniesta and Benzema have been given this same honor in the past for various achievements. Trust the “offended by everything” crowd not to understand this.

We sit here judging the regime and Qatar yet they are hosted probably the greatest World Cup ever with no crowd trouble fuelled by booze etc.
They have taken the World Cup away from the boozy hooligans and given it back to families to enjoy.

All the so called controversies about Qatar was nothing but a hate and poor propaganda, would like to see the same scrutiny of USA when they host the next World Cup, especially their human rights record, the islamophobic travel laws, they racist record against black people and Mexican people, the homophobic and abortion laws etc etc - we will conveniently kiss ass and stay quiet yet unnecessarily criticise Qatar.
Come on!

Being anti-American is about as mainstream as you can get.

But it is xenophobic, racist or whatever discriminatory term you want to label. You defending these unwarranted criticisms kind of show what you truly are deep down.

Ah good, we’ve reached the “actually, not liking the vuvuzelas is racist” stage of the discourse

I wonder if that’s why he ended up wearing what looked like a negligée?

It was weird as feck anyway. And pointing this out is obviously not racist. I mean, come on…

There won't be Hooligans at the next WC either. It has nothing to do with the booze but with the WC being far away from Europe.

:wenger: Christ - how the feck is it racist or xenophobic? 'shows what you truly are deep down' I find it incredible that you feel comfortable levelling those sorts of accusations at people. Get a fecking clue.

I'm tired of people saying that sport should not be 'politicised'. It already is, and has been for a long time. There isn't anything "we" can do about that.

He could have just not worn it if he was bothered about having his Argentina shirt in the photos. Why would anyone care.

The outrage is strange.

For those who have been to university, we wear an offshoot of the bisht when we graduate. It's a sign of achievement.

If Messi felt so strongly against it, he could have declined or taken it off but he didn't.

It was a great moment in all honesty. For too long robes have been left in the shadows and now we're finally seeing their true power come to light. Frankly I think you're all only against the robe because you've invested all you emotional energy into coats and jackets. Sure they had a place once but it's 2022 folks, you can't live in the dark ages forever. Get with the times ffs.

Yep, football and politics are inextricably linked. Always have been.

Which is why it's so grating to see FIFA or the likes of Macron telling people to keep politics out of football when it suits them to do so, even though they're obviously neck deep in it.

do they wear it when they torture members of the LGBT community too?

I've only just seen it as had to leave the pub after the pens last night

its fecking hilarious

I mean for God's sake someone actually wore the LGBTQ shirt, and ran on the field in front of millions. Where is he now? Released with, surprise surprise, his head still in tact.
Congratulations, you fell into their propaganda trap.
That's exactly what they want you to believe, because they want to be a western tourism hotspot. If you think they will behave like that without the world watching and just keep releasing people without problems, who are or behave in contrast to their koran/sharia morals, you're very naive.

It's such a weak retort to valid criticism, makes them look foolish.

He literally was released the day after and went back to his home country.
