Messi lifting the World Cup in that robe

Qatar spending the whole tournament saying “hey, don’t force your culture onto us!!” and then at the very last minute forcing Messi to wear a ridiculously large Qatar robe over his National shirt for the iconic money shot is a pretty fitting feck you to anyone who took any of this shit in remotely good faith tbh.
Yea, this

I felt it was a good end for him to finally turn into Darth Messi. Especially since channeling his inner Maradona demon in this WC.

Who cares if it covered the shirt. Messi or his team mates didn't seem to care.

I don't understand the people on here that get offended on behalf of others, who in fact don't care themselves.

It's fine, Martinez created another one... What a weirdo.

FkSAckuXwAEceaf

I dislike him so much

At the time I found it silly that Messi and his teammates should have their trophy-lifting photo messed about with.

But then, if you read it as wearing ceremonial attire reserved for kings or various forms of remarkable people... well, it's sort of quite apt actually that you both present the trophy and crown Messi while dressing him up as a magician.

I'm getting to the point I feel it makes it a better photo, weird as it is

For those who have been to university, we wear an offshoot of the bisht when we graduate. It's a sign of achievement.

Great, give one to every squad member.

If Messi felt so strongly against it, he could have declined or taken it off but he didn't.

That's silly. His employers asked him to wear it saying that that this is a sign of respect. Declining on a global stage would be disrespecting them and could be damaging to his future paychecks.

As to taking it off, he was in no situation to think through this with the World Cup just feet away from him, waiting to be lifted.

I don't think Messi would need to worry about his future paychecks.

Quality control
Messi’s black cloak is called a 'Beshth'. Arabian warriors wore it after a victory. It’s also worn by the royal family. King of Qatar honoured Messi as a sign of respect. Signifying Messi as a warrior who won for his country Argentina.

Quick google search will show you Kaka, Zidane, Iniesta and Benzema have been given this same honor in the past for various achievements. Trust the “offended by everything” crowd not to understand this.
do they wear it when they torture members of the LGBT community too?
Possibly, I heard they wear it for their camels too when they get married to them. They also give it to the No 1 Terrorist and top beheader of each extremist class. They are made by oppressed women locked in dungeons who sew about a 1000 of them and aren’t paid. I think that about covers all the stereotypes.

Isn't it some kind of gesture of honour to put a piece of cloth like that on someone during a celebration in that part of the world when someone is being honoured? Like, at weddings and graduations and such, does the person being celebrated get a robe like that put on him by the elders/seniors? I read a couple of explanations for it last night and that theory at least makes sense on some level and I guess is the only explanation that doesn't make the entire thing super weird.

Would be funny if after all this , Messi was basically asked , can we do this and he was ,
Yeah I don't care, I don't mind, go for it!

Sheesh!

What's all of this fuzz about?!

Over a bishit!

First of all, it's commonly known to be worn for special occasions such as a weeding, Eid and al jummah prayer for the common people and It'd look awkward if it was put in it for work, school and what not.

However, for others like the royals, ministers and islamic scientists it's a must for recognition day to day out.

For Messi, he was giving it to distinguish him from the rest. A show of respect that he's the one to be recognized from the Argentina players. To demonstrate that he's the 'sheikh' of his group.

Why would anyone be offended by that? They were showing respect to Leo and all of Argentina. It's a nice touch by the hosts and I for once applaud them for that.

Give it a break and admit it's the best World Cup ever.

I genuinely have never seen the image of Maradona lifting the trophy with his teammates in 1986. The only image I've ever seen is him holding it aloft while people hold him on their shoulders. And we have an identical moment with Messi doing that too. That'll be the lasting image.

I went to the World Cup. Echoed the same thing when I returned. I actually wrote on this forum the same thing. I got responses from people who sent random articles about people being arrested being gay.

People and their agenda right. These same people are probably banging on about another agenda in the covid thread.

Those random articles were from human rights organizations, detailing torture, beatings, surveillance, rape and all kinds of stuff. Because of their sexuality and gender identity.

I'm glad you had a good time.

And you wonder why you get threadbanned in other threads. Just absolutely zero constructive input here.

I like that they are using their own anecdotal experience of Qatar being enjoyable and therefore conclusive of their being no wrongdoing, while diminishing 'random' articles that detail specific abuses and disparaging 'people with agendas' that want to have a conversation about it.

Bisht: It is a traditional men's cloak. They are usually worn on special occasions, like weddings and religious festivals. There is a further meaning to the bisht. They are usually worn by secular officials or clergy.

A bisht is usually worn for prestige on special occasions such as weddings, or festivals such as Eid, or for Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah or Salat al-Janazah. It is usually worn by secular officials or clergy, including tribal chiefs, kings, and imams, over a thawb, kanzu or tunic.

I think they meant for it to be a big honour, because you see the Sheikhs/Emirs wear it on royal visits and special occasions. So I think it's them trying to crown the winning captain that way.

Nobody will remember it though, I don't personally care its the first Arab world cup and Messi ends his international career with a WC and a Copa America.

I do think they should have given Messi the option though
I honestly don't see anything wrong with it because it was clearly intended as an honour. I don't think it was Qatar pushing anything, like some folk have been saying.

I've been quite open and critical of this World Cup. Qatar's treatment of migrant workers and their intolerance of the LGBT community is appalling. I refuse to accept it, and I refuse the notion that I have to "respect" it purely because it's "part of their culture."

But World Cups always have the culture of the host nation highlighted. With the robe, it's a part of their culture that I can embrace. Too many people are taking what was a symbol of respect to a guest and turning it into something it's not. I get why it's happening, because Qatar haven't exactly had the PR masterclass they expected this competition to grant them, but fair's fair and all that.

Exactly right. Just sell off football heritage one iconic moment at a time. We don’t need sanctity of sport. Greenwashing is just how it is now. If we’re honest, they all should have got one.

Pisspot behaviour from a weird country.

That's all just happening in your head.

How can you trust them. Human rights organisations created by the west to create an agenda. That is the demonisation of Muslim countries. I’m glad you’re having a good time hating Muslims.

I was there talking to locals. Talking to gays. You’re here behind a computer screen losing your shit.

Anything to back that up? Quite the claim. It's also not the first time that any form of criticism is derided as being xenophobic, racist, or Islamophobic.

Just my first hand view pal. I’m there talking to real people.
How does you being at the World Cup and talking to people lend any credence to the notion that Human Rights organisations are a Western tool used to demonise Muslims? You're just talking out of your arse.

It’s the pat on the head that gets me

I don't remember any other trophy ceremony to tell for sure but has it ever been the case that the head of FIFA and the ruler of the host country have been stuck to one of the winners like a couple of dangle berries.

how can you trust an oppressive regime like Qatar?

I went to Qatar as well, and the local people I spoke to were lovely

It's a shite place to live if you're gay though, and it isn't great if you're a woman either lets be honest

"Salt Bae". Had to google that cnut, can't keep up with all the cretins the internet decide to make famous for no good reason these days.

What were the gays saying about Qatar?

You clearly can’t make any sort of rational judgement about a nation state by going there on holiday. Especially at a time when they’re going to be exquisitely conscious the world is watching.

I mean, I lived in England for 12 years and never met anyone who had bombed a wedding party in Afghanistan. Does this give me enough evidence to shout down anyone who criticises western foreign policy?

I don't mind putting a robe on him but my issue is the robe they chose it ruined the aesthetic of the picture.

A white robe or maybe one that matched the colours of the kit and flag and that's perfectly fine. A black robe made it look like an eyesore.

The Qataris gave that to his missus and Messi probably misunderstood due to communication gap and ended up wearing a negligee to lift the World Cup. Happens to the best of us.

More of a black lace curtain than a robe. I might be showing my ignorance here but are these robes always see through? Or was it some weird compromise to make this Argentina shirt still visible? Because it looked weird as feck. The WC winning captain in a gauzy negligée.
