Messi lifting the World Cup in that robe

Losing your shit over a robe. UK and Europe have done so much to tarnish the image of football around the world, it's actually pleasing to see a country do it right. If anything, they have restored an element of respect long gone in these hooligan filled states.

Nobody is losing their shit over a robe, least of all me. If photos need to be taken in it, great. Go for it.

But Inserting your own country into another countries sporting endeavour is just terribly small time. I pity them really.

There are no circumstances in which I would let someone cover my national or club team kit with something from their culture, for a trophy presentation. Yep, that’s childish perhaps, but it’s also respectful to the other players. Messi front and centre in what just looks like an open substitutes bib.

Messi is a wimpy beg. Qatar are weird. It looked utterly shit to boot. Compare that photo of Diego with his World Cup to Messi in dinner lady chic, tabard lingerie.

Are we going to criticise the England next year when random players from around the world are made to wear the poppy that means absolutely nothing to them?

Can nothing be criticised without this nonsense. And the Poppy causes a stir every year but you just don't notice. That's on you.

Yep. Bribes to get the tournament, use of bonded slavery to build the stadiums and infrastructure, banning rainbow armbands. This was definitely a World Cup built on respect.

So the official twitter account of the Argentinian national team have no problem with it. But the CAF is fuming, hmmm.

And that element of respect is?

We on this forum are the guide of morality and what is culturally and socially appropriate of course!

I'm fine with it though I think its a nice touch, does look funny him bouncing around with it on though.

Argentines are great people with good hearts always assuming the best of people , had some great convos with their fans in Qatar. One of my favourite moments was watching Brazil lose that shootout against Croatia surrounded by them going crazy.

Yeah, doesn't change the fact that players are still required to wear them.

And that's wrong too. We literally have a thread on it for discussion every year. It has nothing to do with this discussion.

By required I don't literally mean required, but those that won't wear it are well known in the english media.

This thread is full of spam anyway.

I think self indulgent is the best description i've heard. Doesn't come off as sincere either, just looks like a PR exercise to insert yourself into the lasting images of the tournament. Which is probably a good image to finish the tournament on.

There has been quite a bit of online commentary, some of it quite derogatory, regarding the black robe that Lionel Messi wore prior to accepting the World Cup. For context, I wanted to explain its significance.

The garment is called a ‘bisht’ and it is an outer garment worn in predominantly Arab countries. The name is derived from the Akkadian word ‘bishtu’ which means ‘nobility’ or ‘prestige’.

This garment is considered a symbol of great honour. It’s a status symbol amongst royalty, the wealthy and those with high social rank, much like a cross between ceremonial graduation robes or, in Western terms, wearing a black tuxedo on a special occasion.

When it’s the Emir of a country literally gifting you the bisht, putting it on you with his own hands, it’s the highest honour that can be bestowed upon that civilian. It has nothing to do with religion at all.

Does anyone seriously think that the captains of both teams wouldn't have been briefed, and agreed to before kick off, as to what was going to happen with regards the cape ?

Racism runs strong.. including in the caf sadly. None of logic and reason means anything. Expect mental gymnastics.

Jesus fecking Christ. I'd feel the same if Germany stuck him in a lederhosen, Scotland in a kilt and blazer, Japan in a kimono etc. I'm not upset or outraged, it just felt like an unnecessarily obnoxious and self-indulgent manoeuvre. This is a football forum so obviously people are going to discuss it. The constant accusations of racism are bullshit and just plain not on.

Loved the robe. Every tournament should have something similar. Vatican should be a WC venue

Ok but if the World Cup was held in England and during the winners presentation King Charles wrapped Messi in a robe and literally crowned him (a la King of the Ring).. do people honestly think it wouldn't be criticized?

You kind of have to believe that if you are saying the criticism of the robe is based in racism right?

What would we blame the criticism on then???

I'd be saying the same thing if Charles draped this over the captain of the winning team. Keep politicians/royalty and their gestures far the feck away.

Exactly and the whole world would be mocking it

Right. But what if people don’t have a problem with Muslims, but have a problem with murderous, HR abusing, corrupt, homophobic royals meddling in football…?

The issue here is that a lot of folk simply can’t get past the notion that anyone who dislikes Qatar does so because of their ACTIONS rather than the religion they implement.
I'm pretty sure you won't find a post from me accusing any poster of racism or Islamophobia for their criticism of Qatar. May you be blessed for your care and concern for the people and the game of football. Respect.

How is it racist to object to a gown? We were all told to ignore certain things as respect for culture, so to take something as universal as the world cup ceremony and impose something cultural on it is just silly.

It's getting absurd. To criticise anything about Qatar is racism. So tedious. Countries should host the world cup, not comandeer it.

I'm not sure anyone objects to anything but using the world cup winning ceremony as an ad for a cultural brand though Sults. Its not an anti Muslim or anti Qatar thing, just that some things are excuse the pun, are sacred.

Wasn’t so much aimed at you Sults, but in reply to the quotes in your post stressing the point that it’s not about religion.

I haven’t read many (any?) people opposing it because it’s Islamic, rather that it’s political and goes directly against the ‘no politics in this WC please’ hardline that fifa and Qatar have decided to go down.

P.S Bless you too and all who are blessed to know you!

So... I don't see this as being greatly different than being forced to have a bottle of beer on your table when doing an interview. (As Ronaldo said, drink aqua.)

We must be careful to distinguish between the Qatari regime (bad) and Qatari culture (neither good not bad).

It's heavy handed but possibly well meaning. is there an official account of what the robe meant? I've seen royalty and I've seen "just a Qatari, Arabic robe"

There are plenty of valid criticisms of Qatar and FIFA at this World Cup, but a black robe imo is not really up there with homophobia and the appalling treatment and exploitation of migrant workers.

How is the robe political?

Actually where was all the outrage when Cafu lifted it in that glittering kimono?

Where were you when Cannavaro had to squeeze into lederhosen?

I can't remember anyone complaining about Cassillas in that tulip like vuvuzela.

Nor when Lahm was donning that copa cabana thong.

But now suddenly? Hypocrites!

You forget the most iconic ones. Pelé and Maradona in their sombreros.

I'm not sure anyone is saying it is. Just that it's odd and quite funny.

You're not really taking into account the difference between a press conference and a trophy presentation. There is one. They're not even remotely the same tbh so not sure how you can't the difference!

I mean that is pretty obvious to anyone who isn't pushing a strange agenda on here.

What a player does after lifting the trophy is entirely his own decision..

Like for example Messi taking the robe off to celebrate with his team mates , fans and family.

Love how people bandy about the 'fact that there's obvious racism here in the Caf,' but never respond to the calls to illuminate it further.
