Messi lifting the World Cup in that robe

Love how people bandy about the 'fact that there's obvious racism here in the Caf,' but never respond to the calls to illuminate it further.

In my opinion that should be punished.

It's a disgusting accusation to bandy about without fear of repurcussion.

The state of this place. Talking about how it's politicized or forcing culture. How is gifting someone something that is your local custom forcing culture? If you went to a country and your host offered you a traditional clothing item, would you feel forced? This is garment traditionally worn by people of esteem so it was clearly gifted out of the highest respect.

Now, to feel it may have ruined the pictures, fair enough it may well have for many but to be so offended by it reeks of what we already know about many on this place.

I'm not sure anyone objects to anything but using the world cup winning ceremony as an ad for a cultural brand though Sults. Its not an anti Muslim or anti Qatar thing, just that some things are excuse the pun, are sacred.
I'm not sure this particular event was meant to be a cultural sell, this robe holds nothing sacred religiously, it's an Arab thing. It holds no religious value in other parts of the Muslim world. It was a simple gesture to show respect to a great player. Even if you are correct and they did use this as an ad for their cultural brand it's pretty much the norm for special events held around the world. The host country generally adds local cultural favour to ceremonies.

I mean that is pretty obvious to anyone who isn't pushing a strange agenda on here.

What a player does after lifting the trophy is entirely his own decision..

Like for example Messi taking the robe off to celebrate with his team mates , fans and family.
Agreed, I have nothing against the robe or any garments of culture/religion, if they want to play to the crowd afterwards thats totally fine. But now the robe will be a part of that historical picture. And Messi himself was drunk and probably didnt even know what was going on

Just for perspective, nobody in Argentina complained about the cloak thingie.

Qatar paid like 200+ billion USD to bribe, exploit workers and get to be the center of the world's attention for a month, you bet your house they are going to take advantage of every opportunity to showcase their culture.

I'd be saying the same thing if Charles draped this over the captain of the winning team. Keep politicians/royalty and their gestures far the feck away.

It has nothing to do with politics or being a royal. It's an honorary gesture towards Messi to make him look like the part among his peers. That's it simply.

I don’t like the robe. My first reaction was that it ruined an iconic image… If I were Argentinian I would probably have found it weird for Messi to be distinguished from his teammates in that pictures (even though there are always officials in suits and GKs messing up the purity).

But the whole racists crap around the critics is sickening. Too many weird takes and insults on social networks, mostly from Europeans… Go figure.

Maybe you're right and my memory fails me. I always thought it was after the ceremony. As part of the celebration and acknowledgement of where they were.

If it was here I'd fully expect someone to be wearing a leprechauns hat at some point, but I'd hope we didn't make them lift the trophy in it.

Hang on, you can not like it but other people not liking it is racist.

That's the legacy of Qatar for me.

I for one im happy he is did it gracefully and looked content and he looked regal I might add ! Also, it helps that Beshits ( call it by its actual name) in the gulf are mostly made in my city in Alhassa, not too far from Doha

But the outrage is extremely funny. U all just going overboard with pettiness.

Also, it appears i know the family that made the one Messi wore. Ohh Hasawis are on the world stage now

I have to re read the thread. Is it outrage?

Joking aside if a leprechaun hat was used some sort of local ceremonial crowning for winners then I guess an Irish WC would take on a whole new level. Personally I'd love to see a Dublin WC final with all the local trappings and shenanigans. And I'm not even thinking of River dance.

of course they don’t it’s just a benign thing in the grand scheme of things. But some want to white knight to prove a point.

We have zero class Spoons. We'd totally make a balls of it and we'd make the robe look very subtle. I'm cringing at the thoughts of it.

You not liking it is nothing. It’s basic human tastes. Some people like some things and dislike others. That’s certainly not racism…

The people I saw on Twitter insulting Arab traditions, that’s what I call racism and bigotry. Many deleted their tweets when they realised they’d crossed the line…

I do think there will a very small minority of posters will make a clever play with words so as not to be accused of racism and get banned. However, it's wrong to accuse posters of racism without actual direct words being typed. There are genuine posters here who care massively for certain issues and will speak out. As does those who care for their faith and culture.

There are polar differences in people's mindsets on certain subjects and clashes and heated debates are inevitable. Enjoy and learn. The human race is not robotic and we don't have to adhere to the same norms. Respect for others is where it's at.

Nah, I think it'd be great. I reckon we'd probably see a lot of scraps but I wouldn't doubt the passion. Anyway, I can't wait to see a WC game played at the Azteca again though. Talk about sentimental.

You think Messi could have turned it down or spoke about it negatively?! Qatar are basically his boss/paymaster at PSG.

It's not about him looking "regal" or not, in the photo of him lifting the world cup he should be looking like someone wearing his nation's shirt.

Not as much here, but online and by big journalists very much so!
I'm happy for you and your friends. I watched the moment live and looked on social media, and the surprised/critical reaction came from all walks of life, not just journos. If only they had just stood off and waited until after to give him the cloak instead of making it all about them, no one would have a problem with it.

Yes. Messi is almost as big as PSG… He could have said whatever he wanted. But maybe the Emir would have called his guards and had them force it on Messi.

So you're not going to explain why it's OK for you to not like the robe but it's racist when others do?

That’s not what I said. And I did answer your previous question. Here it is if you missed it.

Sorry I did miss this.

People on twitter being racist and utter feckers is not news. Of course people are racists and some of those racists hate Islam, , and will use anything they can to get a win.

Whether you meant it or not it wasn't presented fully as 'racist people on Twitter'. In the context it looked like you were accusing people in the thread, direct my or indirectly, whether you meant to or not.

Maybe the organisers didn't think deeply and made a mistake about timing. Maybe not, and wanted to be main honchos. Either way, I need United to start playing again.

I have a feeling that all the 'outrage' would had been prevented if they explained before the final match, through their PR people, that the organisation wanted to offer the robe to the winning captain as a nice gesture, instead of just suddenly putting it over the player. This could have changed all the narrative to a nice gesture and cultural recognition from the hosts to the winners. That robe is supposedly given from the king to another king who he considers worthy

If we all knew about it beforehand, it might actually been very cool and probably the start of a nice tradition for the next world cups... but whateverz they had to ruin the oportunity

Yes, a tweet would have been nice. Although I don't agree with you on handing such an honour to Lloris if France had won.

The Emir of Qatar is still basically Messi's boss.

If his boss told him to do something, he likely has to do it.

The robe wasn't "cultural" in the same context as a leprechaun hat or a kilt etc.

It was "cultural" in the way a diamond may have been given from a country that is famous for diamonds.

It's a little known fact that the region we know as Qatar was most famous for woven robes from about the 13th Century. These are expensive hand woven fabrics in the same way a Persian rug is famous.

That lingerie looking robe is worth a bob or two. And is a gift. Maybe not everybody's idea of a good gift but a gift from a region that was famous for it.

Messi didn’t mind, the Argentina fans were either indifferent or loved it going by how many lined up in the the Souq the day after to get a Beshit and we Hasawis loved it. Thats all that matters really, so all hail sheikh Messi

I don't think the issue is the bisht itself, I think the issue is that Qatar have been shameless in sportswashing and that this was another attempt to do so.

There have been people in this thread who referred to this as a great World Cup; this was in absolutely no way, shape, or form a great World Cup. Yes, there was a great World Cup Final but some of the fare from the group stages was dreary, with only 2010 being worse from my memory (And at least they could blame the Jabulani). 6 games in the group stages ended 0-0; there was one 0-0 in the entirety of the 2018 World Cup if I'm not mistaken. Couple that with lifeless stadia with seemingly full capacity despite the fact we could see many empty seats in the far stands, corruption in the bidding process, deaths working on the construction of the stadia, a country with no trace of footballing culture, and a place that truth be told has never really been a major tourist destination and you end up with a tainted major global sporting event.

With that all said, when the bisht was offered to Messi, do people not have a right to be skeptical? Qatar hardly deserve the benefit of the doubt when it comes to sportswashing even though in this particular case, it might not actually have been sportswashing.

Ronnie never got given a high honour from an Emir of a country in a major tournament, another one missing from his list!

I honestly enjoyed it, England tourny in future better have a full blown coronation ceremony

What I couldn't get over was how the Qatari official stretched his welcome on stage before the trophy. The awkwardness and expectation of it all.

The whole thing was awful. Compared to champions league finals, it seemed seriously dragged out.

Honestly, why not? Future World Cup hosts should take notes from Qatar. I like it when host countries infuse their culture and tradition into major sporting events, such as the Olympics.
