“(Depay) is the type Old Trafford will warm to. He’s an exciting player, but there’s also substance behind it. He was top scorer in the Dutch league and got plenty of assists as well. He’s a ‘United’ type. Our fans demand exciting players, players who can get them off their seats and score spectacular goals.

“One thing we probably have lacked since Cristiano - and Becks (David Beckham) before him – is free-kicks. And it looks like Depay has a great track record from free-kicks as well. Over a season, if you can score more from free-kicks and corners it adds up and makes a real difference in winning games. So, no pressure…but hopefully he’ll score 10 free-kicks every year.

“Old Trafford is the right stage for a player like him,” said Giggs. “Because if you try things that don’t come off the fans will stay behind you. You’re at a club where they want you to do things off the cuff, to entertain them.”

Giggsy will need to do a little more media training from a coach/manager's perspective before he takes the seat at a club. You can't say things like that! If Van Gaal said that you'd have ever paper in the country forensically analysing every free kick Depay takes and commenting on whether he will meet his targets or if he's a flop.

Now for an amazing season too Memphis...

Can leave the hat on holiday if he wants though.

Pretty sure he's joking.

Has that tolerance regarding flair players "trying stuff" gone down? Nani and then Di Maria got a lot of stick for being adventurous. Yes, bad performances were also there but I wonder if we're as encouraging of that as we think and he makes it out to be,.

Giggsy himself was booed in the past at times, maybe he is trying to get the message across to the fans to be more patient / remain patient with flair players.

The United crowd was never one that was very patient with flair players. Every single flair player we'we had got a lot of stick on bad days, form Giggs and Ronaldo to Nani and Di Maria.

the crowd get impatient when a player does endless poor shooting, decision making, crossing. they aint on their back after their first bad moment or failed nutmeg

That's what I like to hear. Wish we got a couple more players with his attitude. Knows when it's time to play and when to get back to business. Love him already:drool:

You hinting at Valencia or? Because plenty people still defend him to this day.
moving to right back has been a blessing for Valencia as he doesn't have to be creative. the initial point was people like Nani would get stick for being stupid, not for trying something and it not coming off

Of course he's joking, I'm just highlighting that the press latch onto statements like that, even if they are in jest, and bring it back up.
That's more of an issue to do with the press not the manager, I would actually prefer it if our next manager (Giggs or whoever) just takes no notice of them as that seems to be the best method for us in the past. People need to stop giving Giggs such a hard time, he's a legend and could be a good manager in the future.

That's a very naive view of the press. It doesn't matter if you have a strong manager who can shrug off their comments. What coaches and managers say in the press will be highlighted and brought up again and again and it can effect players and you want to be wary of doing a that. Sad element of the modem game.

 I don't want to overhype the man but I get a Hazard-type impact vibe about him.

Don't think some realise how good he can be.

Posted this elsewhere, but League Cup games with a potential front four of:
-----------Wilson
Januzaj--Perreira--Depay

is very interesting.

Yeah... doesn't make sense though when 9, 14, 15 and 19 are all available.

just noticed from training pics today that the rest of the squad have their actually squad numbers on the training top. Memphis does not. I'm hoping he goes for 19 .

Some of the goalkeeping was very poor for the free-kicks he scored, but it will be great if he hits in 5 or so over the season.

Luke Shaw was wearing number 28 all through pre-season until the season started, and then it was the more logical number 3. Probably doesn't matter at this stage.

I remember RvP wearing #31 in his first training session as well.

Mata is better goalscoring free kick taker than ronaldo? highly doubtful, mata is good, ronaldo was insanely effective

Mata is, statistically, the best free kick taker to have ever played in the PL. He has the best goal to free kick ratio.
