Memphis | Manchester United Sub | Officially unravelled

He's aware that his attitude has not been good in the past, and by all accounts he has worked very hard to turn that around. He has a life coach for christ's sake.

I'd be bitter too if I went for Depay and could only come up with Elia on loan later on.

To be fair, the scouts opinion matches my fears about Depay, but I doubt van Gaal would tolerate it, so he either packs it in or gets smacked and then packs it in.
To me it's seems like he's a self absorbed self indulgent youngster by nature, but he's a ambitious teamplayer by choice. Or tries to be, or will be in the future. It's almost like he knows he's heading to be a spoiled 'could have been' unless he chooses to go against it. He chose Manchester over Paris, and he chose the most strict, demanding, and team oriented manager above any other.

Koeman of course likes to emphasize how much more money United can spend, but still makes some reasonable points.

What a load of tosh.

What you are saying is that you have preconceived ideas about him and actually the way he handles himself and the way he plays the game doesn't align with them so you're saying he's trying hard not to be that person.

he cost 30 million, sterlin 40 milion fee rejected, he does well we may have a great deal. Think both di maria and depay really could give us that drive and the wingpower we have missed for a long time, and they can actually create for our forwards, not to mention this helps guys like herrera

No, I watched him play, I heard him talk, it's my observation, not my preconcieved idea. I think he makes the right choices and is surprisingly aware of his weaknesses for a guy his age. But it's not like his weaknesses disappear immediately by recognizing them and chosing against them, there's still a difference between the player he (naturally) is and the player he wants to be.

Exciting. Giggs could very well be the best coach for a winger like Depay.

Agreed. With all the ongoing transfer madness we kind of forget that we've already signed one of the biggest talents in European football. I can't wait to see him play for us and hopefully lead our attacking play for many years to come.

The caf has definitely forgotten! I can't wait to see him in a United shirt.

Errrrm Mata? You know, the player with the best goal to freekick ratio to ever play in the PL.

feck me Giggs fills me with absolutely no confidence.
A bit worrying. It's like he only values free kicks if they're hit with immense power (which often go miles over the bar) as opposed to being perfectly placed like Mata's eg against Southampton.

I thought about Mata and RvP was good at it as well. Anyways, Rooney will still take all free kicks anyway so good luck Memphis :wenger:

am I the only one that thinks Rooney's pretty good at free kicks as well? I mean, he was taking them under Ferguson as well (as in it can't be "because he's captain"), there's gotta be something to it. I think all 3 of them are good free kick takers, really not something that worried me if I'm being honest, but then again him scoring more goals than anyone else from free kicks in the big leagues does excite me.

It would be stupid to not let him take some freekicks on the left side. I'm pretty sure van Gaal decides who takes them and Memphis will show in training how good he is, a few goals could boost his confidence aswell.

Mata can still take them from the right.

Rooney's got a very good free kick to be fair. Young's handy at them too, as is Di Maria.

Depay, Rooney, Mata, RvP, Young, Di Maria, we've a bit of versatility at set pieces.

Memphis scored the most direct free-kicks in all the top five European leagues this season. Not like he just lumps them and prays.

The issue isn't how good Memphis is, but more Giggs supposedly claiming we haven't had a good free kick taker since Ronaldo left. Which is utterly ludicrous, seeing as we've had, statistically, the best free kick taker to ever grace the PL in the squad for the past year and a half.

Memphis will be no better at free kicks than Mata is when we let Rooney take 98% of them.

Can you remind me of a season Rooney score more than 3 freekicks?

Ronaldo a great freekick taker, no freekick threat at United despite having Mata in our squad (now we know why he doesn't get a crack at it much... ).

So Giggsay boy is about to take over from van Gaal in 2 years time? :wenger::lol:

I am happy we have signed a possible top class winger, we add di maria if he settles this season, we potentially have that speed and guile to open sides up that was missing last season, instead of trying to pass it without any conviction. In di maria and depay it could be really exciting, and a really exciting attacking trio in depay di maria and rooney in a front 3. We add Schneiderlin and another midfielder, VG's 433 vision may come fruition.

How many direct free kicks has Mata scored for us this season? If you dont count the Mata/Rojo one, I think zero. While Memphis has scored like 7 only in the league.

I'd love to see the total number of attempts of both players.
Because Mata sure as hell isn't taking even 30% of our freekicks.

Odd. Ronaldo scored some spectacular freekicks but I don't think overall he was that great for us in that department. I guess people tend to remember the spectacular.

His 2007/08 Season, Ronaldo's free kick range was pretty insane, I think overall he was a huge weapon for us on free kicks, and we have missed that from him

Some of the replies to this suggested Depay will follow in the footsteps of Ronaldo and Beckham by eventually joining Real Madrid.
