I won't be surprised if he eventually displaces Mata from our line up. He's faster and can dribble as well as score goals. If his passing is anywhere near as good at Mata's(who rarely loses possession) then i fear for our little Juan. Hopefully we can see both of them play together.

They play on the opposite side. Mata looked like he had found his feet at United after the Spurs, Liverpool, City games...very sad that he seems to have went toothless again. I think the man who is in danger is Di Maria though.

It's a bizarre situation...we have two world class players in Mata and Di Maria but both of them can somehow be either rubbish or anonymous during certain games.

Wouldn't be surprised if Fellaini is the player most likely to miss out with Mata moving to a more central position. Think I saw our resident LVG expert @NL Max point out that Mata is a great fit for what he normally looks for in a #10.

But Di Maria doesn't even have a starting berth right now.. It has to be between Mata and Fellaini i think. Unless he plans to use Depay as a wingback then Young will need another dose of bird poo.

Interesting. Can you point me to that post mate if its not too much trouble.

I really hope that happens, though it's unlikely if we can't find a world-class DM...

Here ya go:

Di Maria is better when he has freedom, van Gaal said he's less restricted but still has to fit in with the team more. I don't think he'll be at his best for us in midfield, because he's better at taking people on and has a fantastic cross. He suited RM's midfield but they don't play possesion based football, in our midfield his qualities would be limitted too much. I'm pretty sure van Gaal prefers him in the wing, we haven't seen him in midfield for a while now.

Mata on the other hand is a perfect van Gaal 10 imo. He can give assists, score goals and has great vision/technique. The obvious negative about him is his physicality and defensive workrate. Van Gaal made Sneijder into a hard working defender for the worldcup and I have a feeling he might want to do the same with Mata since he has all the other qualities van Gaal likes. He's not useless when it comes to defending and can certainly put pressure on opponents.

I have a feeling that when our midfield has defensive balance we'll see Mata there again and not Di Maria. Di Maria will probably get a place on the right wing (maybe the left). Mata will still play on the wing at times since he's clearly good enough for van Gaal and he likes multifunctionality. (I use Strootman as an example since pre-injury he would've been the player van Gaal would've bought, I think we'll get a player like him)

Strootman
Herrera -- Mata
Di Maria -- Rooney -- Memphis

Very interesting indeed. Thanks mate. Certainly backs up the claim that LVG does not like to give creative freedom to more than one or two players. Probably doesn't like that unpredictability. He probably wants a well oiled machine with everyone knowing their roles and performing just he way he wants them to.

I find it Fergie-esque really. In fact, Depay is reminiscent of a SAF signing. Young and has sky-high potential.

Yep if anything it's Young who's in trouble as at least ADM can play centrally (once we have a proper DM).

For a further good read on the workings of the "philosophy" try @NL Max comment in the "midfield three" thread

That's what I call a spike...

I don't think it's about the number of players that gets creative freedom. They all have bounderies, they have to stay within their role, and that means there are a few don'ts and a few do's. But within that, they all can and should be as creative as they can. Di Maria can try to beat his defender, but not always and anywhere on the pitch. Same for the others, they should know what's behind their backs so they can judge themselves wether is the right moment to try something that could lead to loss of possession. That's what makes the well oiled machines, if everyone is predictable performing just the positional basics of their role, the machine isn't running like well oiled.

So when does PSV play their next match and is it on SKY @NL Max

PSV plays Heracles Almelo on sunday at 14:30 GMT+1 indeed. It's not the last matchday of the season though, it's round 33. 17-5 at 14:30 is the last match of the season away against ADO Den Haag. Memphis is trying to maintain his status of league topscorer with 21 goals, Luuk de Jong (PSV) is 2nd with 19 goals.

It will be Memphis his last match at home where the fans can say goodbye, don't know where you could see it but if you're desperate you can PM me for a Dutch stream .

His free kicks look good. Maybe he will become our next penalty taker

Great freekicks, not so great at penalties. He took them at the start of the competition but missed 2 horribly and de Jong now takes them. I think if given time he can definately take some FKs.

Great  united will never have a good penalty taker it seems...maybe Gundogan.

Depays youtube videos seem to be mainly of goals and freekicks and not much footage of him beating players. Is that something he doesn't do often? I think that's what United need the most as right now it seems none of our players can break down a defence when they decide to just defend. Young seems like the only one and obviously di Maria is meant to be that kind of player but hasn't done it here yet

He's a very complete winger and he can certainly take players on. He doesn't go past 3 often, but 1 or 2 he will. He needs a bit more space, but isn't useless in small space. He's clearly learning to pick his moments and how to be the best influence in a game by passing more often and shooting, but he still has skills and great acceleration to leave defenders behind. He's very strong so he doesn't get pushed off the ball easy either.

I find it difficult to compare his playstyle right now since he's changing so much. I guess a combination of Hulk and Neymar is the way to describe him.

Why do you use this smiley so often?

Just saw the highlights of him playing in the friendly against Spain, and I remember reading some comments about him in that game, where there were nothing special about him.

I agree. Based on the youtube video, there was nothing special but I do appreciate his maturity on the football pitch, in terms of helping the team while defending. Considering that he is only 21, playing as a left forward/winger, that kind of trait is pretty rare. He doesn't perform any flashy skills but I do like the fact that he does (mostly) the right touches, passes, shots, one-touch and dribbles to get away from defender without exerting too much (probably just saving himself as it was just a friendly game).

Compare to the likes of Robben and Ribery, I think both were dropped before due to their lack of defensive work. Hazard too most recent. I do appreciate the fact that Depay has that trait already, as in working for the team plus he can only improve from here on.

Im 100% sure you didn't see the game, and im really doubting if you even saw the youtube highlights.

Don't get me wrong. I still rate Memphis highly.

Probably I should have said "too many" rather than "any" but I will stick to my point. Ronaldo in his younger days always try to the excessive step-overs and tricks while going nowhere. Depay in the highlight video didn't do too many of the excessive kind but still works.
