so has he been playing on the wing or up top for PSV this season?

He's played on the wing. No idea why I've read so many reports calling him a striker to be honest.

My thoughts exactly, many people on here are putting him in hypothetical formations up top. I thought he'd play on the left hand side if we signed him.

I think people are just assuming that because he's gotten so many goals that he's been playing up top. You'd imagine with the likes of Ronaldo and Messi putting up huge numbers that people would be used to wide men getting lots of goals but apparently not!

Depay's conversion rate of non-penalty shots taken inside the area is 18.5%, compared to 15% for Falcao, 14.5% for RVP, 30% for Harry Kane and Diego Costa. Depay's total goals include 2 pens and 5 freekicks. He has taken a huge number of shots this season. According to Squawka, the breakdown is 67 shots inside the area and 80 outside.

Put another way, he would do well to score half that number in the PL even if he started almost every game, as he simply wouldn't get anywhere near 100 shots, and it is unlikely he'd be taking pens or many freekicks.

He plays on the left, don't worry. :)

Thought so, it would be great to have a 20 goal a season winger again, and that is the main reason this signing would be great for us.

In fairness in the post-Ronaldo/Messi world, the difference between a striker and a winger is much less than it used to be. But you're right, he's much more winger than striker.

I hope we do manage to sign him since other clubs look like they have made inroads with him as well! He's a fantastic player!

If we get him, we get him. I will trust LVG and the scouting team on this - but I would rather Bale or Sterling, and would like Nani to be given a chance as well.

Bale and Sterling would could 3 times the amount Depay would cost. Not worth it.

We could make a cracking chant to the tune of Walking in Memphis
if Arsenal sign him its gotta be 'Walk It In memphis'.

Anyway with a name like memphis he was either going to be a footballer or a male pole dancer. Thankfully he chose the football.

And we need a quality winger. Money shouldnt be the deciding factor (same applies at RB).

I could understand if it was Bale, but not Sterling. Sterling isn't miles ahead of Depay.
Also we have ADM too

I havent seen too much of Depay except the highlights but I expect you are right. Sterling is however, english, homegrown (in the country obviously, not the club) and PL proven.

I would rather have LVG spend loads of money on a midfielder, central defender and a right back, and buying Depay then spending ridiculous amounts of money on Bale. Sure, if money is not an issue, buy all of em :)

I know, but the insane price that Sterling would cost I really don't see him being in that bracket of player tbh. Maybe I am wrong but I'm not fully convinced about him being in the top bracket just yet. If we spend that money on Sterling he better end up being WC else he will be deemed a flop in the long run.

You really think that Liverpool will sell Sterling to us ? Depay is a great prospect that we can actually sign, Bale would be nice but is he for sale ?

I dont think so (about him be labelled a flop) - its the same argument as when we signed Rooney. Even if he never wins the Ballon d'Or, having one of the best English players on our books for 10+ years makes £50m look like a bargain (£50m now is arguably less than £30m when we bought Rooney, with the way prices have inflated)

I dont know, but with his contract running down (Sterling), Liverpool may not get much of a choice in the matter.
As for Bale, I dont think he is deemed galactico enough to be indispensable at Madrid, much like Di Maria last summer.

Liverpool may sell Sterling but it won't be to us, if he was available I would sign him over Depay for the reasons you mentioned, tough.
Bale would cost way too much, I genuinely prefer to put the money on Pogba, Isco or Koke than Bale.

Bale's problem is that he's playing supporting role to Ronaldo. At Spurs he was the main man and scored for fun.

At 50m yes doesn't need to win Ballon d'Or but he has to have better seasons than he has had this season IMO

Isn't he going to have that problem if he goes to any really big club.

To a degree, but no where more so than Real and Barca where the frontlines are just loaded with attacking talent. He'd automatically be the best attacker at any club outside of those two in the world (Robben might be better, but is about 32 years old).

I wouldn't say so. There's not many clubs in the World with a player like Ronaldo afterall. Madrid is littered with stars all over the pitch, he wouldn't really find that so much at United, City or Chelsea. He'd be seen as one of the absolute key players in the starting XI.

If he has scored 5 free kicks this season then he should be taking all of our free kicks

We should definitely sign him and I wouldn't be against going for Gareth Bale as well.

Whilst United and Liverpool are still obviously great rivals at club level, I dont think things are quite the same as with the Fergie/Benitez era of genuine hostility and viciousness. I think if Sterling wanted to come to us and we put in a good/better bid than other clubs, Liverpool wouldnt be stubborn enough to refuse to sell to us on "rivals" grounds.

Bale's problem is that he's playing supporting role to Ronaldo. At Spurs he was the main man and scored for fun.

Sure, and with Madrid being the circus that they are, that normally translates into "we dont need Bale". As with Sterling, if a good offer came in (£50m or so) I dont see any reason why they wouldnt sell.

He hasnt been that bad this season but yes, I would expect him to improve. He is still young though and not near his peak, so I am sure he will improve.

Anyway guys, we are debating pretty much everyone except Depay here, happy to discuss further in the relevant threads.

If we do sign him, i think it would do wonders for di maria. If Di Maria is to play in the LCM position of a 4-3-3, then having a winger like depay ahead of him who can cut inside will give di maria a whole lot of space of run through, like ronaldo did for him in madrid.

That would mean totally change our game plan for Di Maria, I'm not a fan of that. It's nice that Depay can give us that option, though.

To be honest i'm not sure we'll get the best out of di maria otherwise. Where do you see depay playing then?

I see him play on the left instead of Young (if he manages to take Young's place) and I see Di Maria on the bench or on the right wing.
