I'm surprised there isn't more activity on this thread, its pretty much been confirmed we are signing Depay in the summer. Title change perhaps?

We signed Di Maria and Falcao last summer. Maybe it just takes us a little more to get going these days lol.

Jumping the gun a bit don't you think? Many a chairman have used our name before to drum up business. While i do also hope/believe we've a good chance of signing him it's not done and dusted yet

What i never understand about players like this is, why the feck are they wingers. Just a few managers in the world would actually do different.

- Hes strong
- Fast
- Scores a lot
- Can take out 1-2 opponents.
- 2 footed

Seriously what more do you want in a striker?

Bale - Depay - Di Maria please.

Space - if you a striker you are almost always near a CB. Where as the side players tend to push up etc.

There is a tweet in the Twitter thread which states PSG and Scousers have permission to talk to him - no mention of us.

Because if they can score for fun out in the wing while playing well as a winger it gives you the option to have a scoring striker as well which is double the goals. Goal scoring wingers are rare, especially high scoring ones. If they're a threat too they spread the defense even more.

For example if Depay can score 20 from the wing and 25 up front who will score from the right hand side? Young scored 2 goals from the right.

Depay as striker
25 goals + Ashley Youngs 2 goals = 27 goals.

Depay as winger
20 goals + Rooneys 15 goals = 35 goals.

This has been the worst kept secret in football.

Hargo was the worst.

As for the signing itself, Does that mean, Nani's career is over at OT?.

and people keep coming up with numbers of 20 goals and such, Seriously. The last winger who scored such goals for us, turned out to be the world's best player. Do you guys think Depay is in that category?. No way!!!!

Was Ronaldo when he joined us. That's the thing with young players, we have no idea how far they can go.

I would've thought so, yes. If we don't have a buyer by the time we go on tour he might well earn a chance there but think we'd definitely be willing to let him go to the right offer.

With regards to Depay, I feel sure if we want him, we'll get him.

From ESPN (http://www.espnfc.com/story/2408946...united-city-psg-spurs-psv-chief-marcel-brands):

Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are all in the hunt for PSV Eindhoven's Memphis Depay, the Dutch club have revealed.

Depay, 21, is one of Europe's most exciting prospects with 20 goals and three assists in 27 Eredivisie outings this season.

PSV's sporting director, Marcel Brands, told Dutch TV the newly crowned Eredivisie champions have already fended off PSG and Spurs during the winter transfer window.

"PSG and Tottenham wanted to buy Depay in January, and they offered €20 million," Brands said. "PSG are interested, as are Manchester United and Manchester City. But it will clearly cost more than the bids we have already rejected."

It's on the Breaking News banner on SSN - we've made an "initial enquiry".

BBC reporting it too,

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/32379371

Manchester United have asked about the availability of PSV Eindhoven forward Memphis Depay, according to the newly crowned Dutch champions.

The 21-year-old is the leading scorer in the Eredivisie, with his 20 goals helping PSV win the title for the first time in seven years.

"We have had a telephone call from them about him," PSV's technical director Marcel Brands said on Dutch television.

"But no talks have been held. Several top clubs have expressed interest."

Netherlands international Depay scored PSV's second goal as they overcame Heerenveen 4-1 on Saturday to win their first Eredivisie title since 2008.

Brands said Depay would cost more than the 20 million euros (£14.4m), which is roughly the figure Tottenham Hotspur reportedly bid for the player last year. Spurs were unsuccessful in that attempt.

"It will be much higher than the offer from Tottenham Hotspur," Brands added. "He will be very expensive."

PSV coach Phillip Cocu told the media after Saturday's title triumph that he expected both Depay and midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum to leave.

Depay played at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as the Netherlands finished third before Louis van Gaal quit as head coach to take over at Manchester United.

Looks like its happening doesnt it?

Must say I'm a little bit guarded about this. Granted I've only seen PSV on the highlights programme on telly this season, which is a fairly awful way to make a judgement about a player. But like always with players from the Dutch league its hard to get a sense of how much is about his talent and how much is about the low quality of the opposition.

Still, the step up is the only question mark I suppose, he's certainly got talent and pace

This is the first time in ages that a Dutch club has had the chance to orchestrate a bidding war for a player, I wonder if he'll end up going for more than Suarez.

Reading the quotes on skysports, where do they actually mention United? It just says "several clubs"

I like Northcroft but he's not the source he was at Utd post Moyes. (He was a journo of choice for Moyes at both Utd and Everton).

Not saying he's wrong mind.

If it's between us, Liverpool and Spurs, it's hard to imagine him not choosing us assuming he's told he'll be first choice here. We can pay more, and he knows LVG.

He scored plenty in the Europa league too, and the WC. His talent is not in question.

Tottenham isn't supposed to be in for him anymore, but PSG is, and apparently they're the most concrete for him at the moment. They've already made an offer for him in january too.

Well, PSV's opponents in the EL have been sub Eredivise standard so that's not really telling. He did well in the WC. But as I say the question mark is not so much about what he can do, rather whether he can do it in a more difficult league. Obviously since we're buying him I rather hope he can, but he isn't one of those guys I've watched who just clear as day going to be a top player.

That said Michael Cox of zonal marking, who tends to be pretty even headed in his reporting, rates him as the best young prospect in Europe.

I don't. Moyes mouthpiece and serial apologist for him. Seen yesterdays Sunday Times? His match report on the Chelsea game is laughable for the lack of credit given to United and is immediately followed by a piece on how his best mate Moyes is "thriving" at his new club.

Yeah - i cant disagree with any of that. He was always pro-Moyes. As for the lack of credit to Utd, most journos in this country reported similar. Typical British opinion. Would have been interesting to see the take of journalists in Europe on the game.

TBH most young players who excel in the EPL come from so called sub standard leagues, this kid obviously has some serious talent.
Blind talents were also quite obvious but many doubted him before we signed him.
I'd much rather sign young players from these more technical leagues than the overrated ones we produce in the EPL

While that's true it depends what your opinion of a top player is. I admit right now he is not the finished article and will probably frustrate in his first season, but he has that "rough diamond" potential that Fergie used to love talking about. He has the physique, skill and desire to make it to the top, and I don't see that diminishing. At a club like ours with a top coach like LVG I can see him coming on leaps and bounds, and offering us a real goal threat from out wide.

It's not Liverpool and Spurs we have to worry about, it's PSG.

Believe he is only going to a club who play Champions League football, as is the way these days.

He said when he leaves PSG it will be for a "big club". I don't think PSG command that type of respect in Europe. Let's be honest France is hardly the most exciting league around either, the only thing they can offer is extra money.
