No it wouldnt, Maher is one of the most overrated youngsters in the Eredivisie in last years, he's too lightweight for the Eredivisie let alone the PL, he hasnt managed to have a big influence on PSV and only plays because PSV have to earn back his transfer fee. Maher needs quite a few years in the Eredivisie before even considering going abroad.
Yes 7 goals in 21 starts in the league from midfield from a 21 year old... No influence at all???

Maher creates the 2nd most oppertunities in the team behind Willems, who happens to have 11 assists from leftback

how good is Wijnaldum? I always thought he was a great talent from what i heard, but never impressed me from the little i watched him. Is he overrated?

Makes me think of Valencia in CM for Ecuador, but without all the tackles. Physical and can run with the ball, his passing keeps the ball but doesnt create

He has 10 goals so thats something

ok, a bit unspectacular then in terms of dribbling and passing. Could he be an option for us? (or for van Gaal?)

Do you really think that if Maher gets injured, PSV would miss him? The most influential players are Guardado, Wijnaldum, Depay, Willems, de Jong, Maher isnt part of that group. He isnt regarded as one of the best midfielders in the Eredivisie (Guarfado, Wijnaldum, Klaassen, Clasie, Gudelj) and is hardly a standout performer. Nowhere near close to ready for a step up.

Well yes because he's their 2nd best creator whilst being 2nd to Guardado on passes from a midfielder and there isnt much in that either. So they'd obviously miss him

That doesn't mean we should be looking at him though, I agree he should stay there and improve more. He's not better than Ander

Do you watch PSV frequently? By going on such stats you can say Smalling is the best CB in the Eredivisie, and Herrera is better than Fabregas. Psv often play reaction/counter football, a creator as Maher is, isnt the most integral part of their team. Rather players who are key in the counter attacks, go from box to box and win their battles (Wijnaldum for example), if Maher isnt there, they would fill in a midfield like Hendrix, Guardado and Wijnaldum, I really doubt Maher would be missed. If I recall it well, Maher missed some matches this season and it didnt really influence them.

No shit Maher isnt better than Ander, you can even doubt he's better than Cleverley.

Someone has to set those attacks up, nobody is running from their own box to score game after game. Maher has 2nd most key passes and 2nd most accurate crosses, he's clearly important in finding someone in a good position to finish off the attack

Fabregas' stats are better than Ander's obviously because he's been one of the best players in the league. Thats just crazy talk

Do you watch PSV a lot because @Sammyjunn is pretty clued up on all things Eredivisie? Stats don't tell you the full story which I'm guessing you're fully basing your opinion on. Whenever I've watched Maher, he's failed to impress.

Go to Squawka, comparison matrix, compare Herrera and Fabregas, per 90 metrics, type in total score and it will tell you that Herrera is far more influential and better than Fabregas this season, watch matches and you'll see that it isnt the case.

What does Squawka have to do with anything? It doesnt even have the stats of the dutch league.

Whoscored does, and thats where you can see that Maher's relevant stats to his position show that he plays an important role, even though there are several other better performers for his team this season

In exactly the same way it shows that Fabregas is the 2nd most creative player in the league after Downing if you count crosses as well (but with a lot more assists, suggesting Fabregas' sets up better/easier chances as well as Chelsea have better finishers)

Meanwhile Ander ranks as the 103rd most key passes and even lower with crosses. He makes more tackles and he's important to the balance of our team, but its obvious that Fabregas is what you want from your attacking midfielders and the stats show how superior he is at finding a teammate in a goalscoring position, a relevant stat. Not some score Squawka came up with for people too lazy to look at the particular things that are important to a role.

Little, but a lot of the time players are doing things that that the general football fan doesnt notice. This is why every game there are posters suggesting Blind hasnt done much, but the stats show he won the ball a good amount for a player in his position and made a lot of accurate passes.

More than say, Michael Carrick, who gets all the praise Blind doesn't

People live by their repuations when you don't pay attention to the facts. Carrick's reputation is that he intercepts a lot with his reading of the game, but is a bit soft and doesnt make that many tackles but he also plays the most passes at United, being the main man to control the game.

In both 11/12 and 12/13 Carrick made more tackles than interceptions. Nobody adjusted their view of Carrick, the perception that he doesnt make many tackles but wins the ball with interceptions was still peddled out all over the place with people suggesting we need to buy a good tackler to put next to him.

These people watched the matches but werent aware of the fact that Carrick made plenty of tackles, because they felt like they know the player based on their earlier judgement and his extra efforts with tackling went unnoticed.

Its great to watch the matches, but you need to check your facts before you state your opinion as if it is the fact you didn't check. We're only human and we aren't there counting how many passes or tackles a player makes in a match. We're watching the whole football match, we're not scouting a player or reporting stats to a website. So we miss things, every single one of us. And thats why you should check to make sure you appreciate the good/bad things players are doing that you missed, because if you don't you won't have a good perspective and you might say something silly.

If youre going to base your opinion on a player entirely on stats then you have to look at the stats on a game by game basis rather than as a whole. Maher's average stats are inflated hugely by 3 or 4 games earlier in the season when PSV won by 4 or 5 goals. He is extremely inconsistent and rarely makes the difference in a tight game. He has plenty of ability but needs to be a lot more consistent to be considered one of their most important players because at the moment he plays 1 or 2 really good games then does nothing for 7 or 8 games.

Nah Maher getting absolutely destroyed as underwhelming by all the Dutch pundits and fan forums. He has turned into a joke here.

Pretty much this.

@Ekeke
Maher isn't even the most important midfielder at PSV right now. He's rotating with Hendrix, Guardado and Hiljemark. He did well at AZ but was garbage in his first season for PSV. He's now stepped up a little but he's still not at his AZ level. Absolutely not what we need at United, another #10. Don't think he'd even start for Stoke City. He needs a few more years at PSV to prove he can hold onto this level, and to earn his transfer (PSV payed alot for a Dutch club).

@izec
Wijnaldum is a good player. He stayed because he wanted to win the Eredivisie before leaving, which he's currently on the way to do. He's a CAM/CM who has played as RW a few years back. He's fast, has flair to beat a man and can score goals. Makes some important tackles but that's not really his style. He's perfect for teams who play on the counter. I don't think he should go to the absolute top just yet, but he's ready for a higher level than PSV. Not really what we need either.

On Memphis Depay: Dutch article on a trusted site says the surroundings of him all suggest he's coming. They don't mention any sources but hey, I'm easily muppeted

Why are people telling me Maher isnt even the most important midfielder at PSV, or that he isnt one of PSV's most important players?

Who said any different?

I just disagreed with the post that suggested wouldnt be missed by PSV if he doesn't play, because he's the midfielder who creates for them. Their other midfielders are not the type to do that, they only keep the ball (Guardado and Wijnaldum although the latter is a goalscorer too)

I'm then told that PSV play on counters, and that somehow makes key passes irrelevant like a pass to set someone on a counter attack ending with that player shooting won't be counted.

Guardado is best at CAM, but he usually plays as CDM because Hendrix is only a youth player and Schaars is injured. He has the experience to be of influence everywhere and might be the best midfielder in the league. Wijnaldum is also a CAM and creates loads. They're both more important in creating than Maher. Maher isn't undroppable, Guardado and Wijnaldum are. Everyone who watches PSV will tell you Maher isn't that good. He's better this season than last, but he can do way better. He's not important since PSV have such a strong midfield, of course he provides but if he really was that good he'd be undroppable. Had personal issues too. He's not ready for a step up yet.

agree that he should stay as I said earlier. Wijnaldum creates for himself

Scored a nice goal to end his mini goalless streak this Sunday. Didn't catch the game but how did he look?

Feyenoord-PSV was at the same time as Liverpool-Manchester United :(

I've watched United since PSV basically got the title wrapped up already. So I don't know how he's played this week.

United's interest in Depay has become more serious

This is it for me lads. He's favorited tweets about us, he has a good relationship with Louis van Gaal, PSV confirmed he's leaving, as a fan I think he's exactly what we need. And now for the most trusted PSV journo to come out saying we've got serious interest in him..

Welcome to Manchester United Memphis

Please don't get injured..

Great. Reckon he'll be a solid signing. Not quite Ruud/Suarez but not Afonso Alves either.

Is Willems the shit left back who played in Euro 2 years ago? If he is still that bad, I hope that City signs him for 30m.
