Memphis Depay | Lyon player

I said it seems because its more of a feeling you get from his general demeanor.

He seems too concerned with the off the pitch aspect of things.

Ah, it's your feelings

Just saw this in the telegraph

It was December 2015 and, concerned about some of Memphis Depay’s off-field decisions and the unwanted attention he often drew, Ryan Giggs, then Louis van Gaal’s assistant at Manchester United, sat down to talk to the Holland winger.

This was not uncommon. Giggs had often taken the time to counsel, advise and encourage Depay, something the player appreciated. He would later describe Giggs as an inspirational mentor.

“He talks a lot with me and gives me advice to equip me,” Depay said. “He has experienced everything already so he helps with all kinds of things. He works a lot with me.”

So Giggs talked, Depay listened, made all the right noises and United hoped the message would sink in this time because such conversations had not always been heeded before. Imagine the furrowed brows then when, a couple of weeks later, Depay arrived at United’s Carrington training base in a gleaming £240,000 Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe.

Told to keep a lower profile, shun the bling, reconsider his extravagant, excessive attire and buckle down, the message went in one ear and out of the other. The exasperation was marked. As a snapshot of Depay’s doomed career at Old Trafford, it was telling.

He's shown good trickery at times in recent performances but he has cost us a few goals and had a long awful spell of getting tackled and giving the ball away.

Perhaps if we had a tip top team with the left wing spot vacant then it might've worked

I remember when he first came to OT and mentioned Ronaldo. I don't believe for a second he knows the kind of work Ronaldo put in.

Memphis is known to stay longer than everyone else, and train some more. He did this at PSV (interviews with Cocu), and the same at United (Mourinho said this).

I don't think it's about attitude with him and he looks in great shape. I think it's about quality. Good luck to him at Lyon. He's more likely to rediscover his PSV form in a weaker league.

Every player is always the last to leave the training field. Makes you wonder if any of them go home.

Seems like a good chap subject to unfavorable conditions (squad depth mostly). Wish him all the best at Lyon; hopefully he can kick on his young footballing career there.

He'll join Klopp at Liverpool for €35 million within 2-3 years and fire Liverpool to a Premier League title, scoring 25 goals....

I'm just kidding...

Jj

I'd have been confident too if I'd ripped a league apart, won POTY, did well at the World Cup, got bought by one of the world's biggest clubs for a huge fee, given their most iconic jersey #, and made the focal point of their entire attack instantly, all at the age of 21.

To be last point, though, what the feck was van Gaal thinking? I remember him literally building the team around Memphis at the start of last season and basically every attack going through him, and usually failing.
He didn't tbh.

Yeah and largely, Suarez aside, they haven't succeeded elsewhere.

Memphis is pretty devoid of the necessary talent to succeed anywhere close to the top level, that's pretty obvious by his performances for us.

People seem to have a tendency to justify young player's not succeeding by saying they have bucketloads of talent but just haven't been able to deliver, and in some cases that's true (Januzaj), Memphis just hasn't succeeded cause he's really not very talented at all.
Yeah like van Dijk, Alderweireld, Verthongen, Eriksen, Van Aanholt, Blind, de Vrij, Dost, Wijnaldum, Strootman for example who all moved in the space of the kast 3-4 years and some have grown to be even some of the best in the PL and Serie A.

Why hasn't this been officially confirmed yet? Did he fail medical? ffs

Never saw the hype with this kid, he looked good in a very poor league. Great athlete but not a very good footballer.

Thought he would turn out a decent player mind, but bar that one Midgetland game he's been pretty dire.

Memphis will still be a very good professional footballer. The Premier league just wasn't the right fit for him. It was funny reading interviews with him saying how he never had any problems in Holland and could basically turn his game off/on to win matches single handed. I think he was a bit naive about the jump in quality to the PL. His game just wasn't tight enough to be successful here.
France seems like a good spot for him to land and get some confidence back...Lyon are always pretty decent and the competition obviously weaker.

It's a bit of a shame - as i think he does have something about him, and he could, possibly, become a great footballer... but he almost certainly wasn't going to be able to do that here, so a right decision to move him on.

He is our very own Ryan Babel. Huge reputation as the next big thing from Holland etc...

What did Koeman say?

Asked on Thursday whether he had changed his mind about taking Depay to Goodison Park, Koeman responded: “No, it was one of our options to bring him in but the business is not done between Everton and Manchester United.

"The player had different options and that is what happened.

“It is not fair to speak about him because he is not an Everton player and, from what I hear, he will sign in France.” (source)

Could also have meant Everton wouldn't pay what we wanted.

Tbh Memphis needs to get out of the premier league anyway, it's not going to be any different for him at Everton.

He needs to start playing every week at Lyon, get his confidence back and build back up. Maybe in 3-4 years time he might be ready for the big leagues again.

Don't think he rejected Koeman, but WE rejected Everton because Everton only want to loan but we want a sale.

I think he will fail in France as well. Much of his game is about using his physical abilities and Ligue 1 is quite a physical league. So, I think he would be much better of in Italy or Spain. Guess he's another player who was hyped after one season in Holland and then all his tattoos, muscles and social media hype took over.

I mean ALL clubs wanted a new Hazard and Memhpis kinda matched. Therefore United bought him.

Quite enjoying this selling business. Ashley and Bastian next please.

Scouting isn't that simple. Clubs are watching lads from 12/13 and how they develop and Depay would have been on lots of top teams radar cause he is an outstanding talent. It's nonsense these debates about lesser leagues as some of the best players to lace up a pair of boots for Utd have started playing their football in so called lesser leagues. What do people actually think they all come from academy's, well it's quite the opposite.

The irony of English football is if it was made up of mainly English players in the top teams, it would be seen as a lesser league.

Depay has a talent I think, no shame as many signings need the stars to align and a big slice of luck for them to work out initially. I hope it works out for him as that can only be to our benefit down the line.....

Shame he didn't work out here, looked good at PSV. Good luck to him.

At least i won't have to hear and read people constantly referring to him by his first name anymore.

Sad to say, but I don't think he'll be a success here either.

Ligue 1 is stuffed with huge, great black guys - if you want to stand out, it needs craft and skill, not muscle. And I never saw much craft and skill from Depay....

Great business from Ed Woodward, though. Just hope the French Fraud Police won't come knocking on his door soon....

That has always been the weird part for me. Watched him a couple of times against Ajax and he always made a great impression on me, he could even play a decent pass and not just run, cut inside and shoot 10 miles over the goal like what we usually got to see from him. But for us somehow he couldn't beat another player if his life depended on it nor play a pass farther than 10 yards. The only times he somewhat showed some of his potential while playing for us was during a few games in European competitions.
