He's never had a hard on for defenders. While they will need to replace him eventually I'd be surprised if it's now, especially with Hazard or Eriksen possibly this summer. As others have mentioned Militao is coming so they'll be fine another few years.

Aside James I wasn't aware that these guys were all pretty much certainties? Perhaps I've not been keeping up.

It's not that they are certainties - we are being linked to them and yet not signed anybody. If we had signed say 2 of these players now, I'd have less hope of then going to buy de ligt.
Nothing will happen with de ligt before after the internationals. No one will pay 70 mill and he breaks a leg or something like that during those two matches. That's bad business.

When Sanchez was signed, he was made the top earner, under the assumption that he would be our top attacker. A Galactico, by all accounts. Unfortunately, he turned out to be a complete dudd and now we are stuck paying him big money.
With De Ligt, what if he doesn't turn out to be as good as you think? Surely this would become Sanchez, all over again.

Sanchez for me was coming in to a place we were already strong at - atleast in terms of views of the whole squad. We needed a RW more than a LW.
What we did that season was try to improve in a position we were generally well at - especially with Martial having a good season under Jose before Sanchez came.
De Ligt however addresses a weakness in our squad. We don't have a single defender that can play at LCB whilst generally our whole defence is poor.
I didn't want Sanchez when he came because all he was - was Jose wanting his attacking winger/forward on one side whilst on the other side having a traditional winger on the other. It was Jose trying to turn United an the squad to his ready made Chelsea tactics rather than trying to find a balance in making the players he already had in the squad.
De ligt isn't a player that may come here purely for a tactical purpose - but a purpose of making our squad better.
According to El Chiringuito, Sergio Ramos decided to stay at Real Madrid. I don't think they will try to sign De Ligt with Ramos, Varane, Nacho and Militao.
That would be the department of wishful thinking doing that. As for De Ligt, I suspect that this will end up as the latest summer wankfest with everyone and his brother speculating before he signs for someone else.

You can choose to believe that all you want, does not mean all will need to suck up to them. They had a very good season, but that does not mean they are better than Barca/Madrid. If that was the case, then a team would only be judged based on the last match it played. If all it takes is one season, then Leicester were also the best team in the world at one moment in time based on how you judge teams.
We also beat PSG so surely we must be better than them by that immense logic of yours.

If people are willing to call Man City the best in the world, Liverpool almost definitely have a good case as well.

Exactly. Somehow people fail to see that it's not a flukey CL final. It's deserved back to back CL finals coupled with 97 points in the Premier League, losing the title by a point. There's nothing that indicates Barcelona or Real are better than Liverpool at this very moment. Still I'm the one accused of cherry picking.
Also, Liverpool didn't get a fluke victory against Barcelona. They lost the first leg with a score that didn't tell the story of the game, and in the second leg it was very clear what team was better.
This does not compare in any way to our victory against PSG, or occasional victories of small teams over big on the league. Your analogies are not standing on firm ground.

Even so, 4-0 in the second leg (the one that counts) was a demonstration of superiority. 180 minutes of Champions League football is as good a criteria as any. And Liverpool emerged not only as the victor, but as a team one notch above the opponent. That's my take anyway.
Real will certainly improve over their last season. Barcelona, I'm not sure, and they will have to improve because right now they are between top 3-5 in the world imho, but no way they are the best club in the world with their current squad. If I was wrong they wouldn't be on the verge of sacking their manager. And if Messi gets injured or starts to decline their troubles will be endless.
Still, this is a de Ligt thread and I think I have done more than my share to derail it.
The whole point of this debate is trying to determine if Barcelona is that much irresistible for players in the current atmosphere, that's what matters. MUFC got a lot of problems but Barcelona also has worries to address, next manager included.
From MdL's perspective, there are pros and cons in both Barcelona and Manchester United. Main con in MUFC is no UCL, but that can be a season-only thing if we get our stuff together. What I'm strongly against is the notion that signing for Barcelona over MUFC is a no brainer. It is not.
Don't bother. Some fans don't have neutral glasses as a way of showing their non stop love for United.
