Matteo Darmian

It just didn't work out. It's a real shame, as the beginning of last season some of us (including me) were saying he had the potential to be one of the most defensively solid right backs in the league. He started very well and it just all went downhill. He should go back to Italy and get his career back on track.

To be fair to him most our players were pants last season. He's clearly got a confidence issue.

If he was favoured this season I think he would be decent. Like anyone who has regular football.

He's absolutely shite. Even with regular football he is never going to be good enough here.

Was really happy when we signed him but it became apparent very quickly that he cant cope with players running at him and has a lack of pace. Much happier with Fosu-Mensah as Valencias back up.

I doubt regular football would make a difference, he had 40 games here last year and was for the most part awful. He actually got worse as the season went on, culminating in the Spurs match away.

Just doesn't fit in either the club or league. Better for all parties if he goes back to a less intense league where his lack of stamina and unwillingness to attack isn't so much of an issue.

Manchester United fullback Matteo Darmian has agreed to join Inter Milan.

That's according to both Tuttosport and La Gazzetta dello Sport today.

Darmian has decided to make the move after speaking with Italy coach Giampiero Ventura over his lack of minutes at United this season.

So he is heading back to Serie A in January 2017.

It's expected to be a paid loan with option to buy at the end of the season.

Juventus, Napoli and Milan have also been linked, but Inter seem to be in advanced negotiations with Darmian's entourage.

The first of many. I had high hopes for him, think he can regain his form in Italy, i watch Inter's most games anyway. A good upgrade for them, Santon is dogshit.

One of many van Gaal specials. The amount of trash that guy brought to this club, jesus.

To be fair these players generally look good before joining us though. I mean Darmian was (maybe still is?) a regular starter for Italy and he was linked with loads of big clubs before joining us. Meh i dunno it feels like even Messi would look wank in this United 11.

Being a regular starter for Italy means nothing, its not a seal of excellence. Rojo is a regular starter for a side that got to the last world cup and copa america finals. He's shite also.

I wonder how much of a loss we manage to make on this one :nono:

I'm sure we'll end up selling for less than half what we bought him for, Van Gaal's poor transfer dealings will probably end up costing the club £100-150m. He's always worked under a director of football at his previous clubs, in hindsight we gave him way too much leeway in transfer decisions.

Oh great, Italian buyers. £20 pounds and a packet of quick-boil spaghetti it is then.

Is this Santon the one who used to be at Newcastle? Wasn't he a leftback? Or am I getting players completely mixed up?

Yes, it is him. I assume Darmian will play there a lot of times, since on the right they have D Ambrosio and Ansaldi. Ansaldi is a LB at RB and Santon is a RB at LB. Darmian can play both sides too.

How far his stock has fallen. I remember we were excitedly stalking his plane from Turin to Carrington prior to his arrival. Happy days

Started like a house on fire but had his arse handed to him in the 3-0 walloping at The Emirates last season - he never seemed the same after that although that was squarely the fault of LVG playing Dads Army in a high pressing midfield leaving Sanchez and Cazorla with the freedom of the city.

Serge Aurier in the summer! Partner him with Bailly on the right and we'll forgot Darmian ever wore a Man Utd shirt...

He was outstanding in his first month for us, proper defensively solid.

The curious case of Matteo Darmian... Unlike so many other new recruits, he started off well but quickly faded into to the Dutch darkness. A pity really, looked like he would go on and become a steal in today's market while in fact we got the bad end of "the steal".

I don't like the idea of just getting rid of him. He's shown a lot of promise in his early days with us and I thought he looked good in the Europa league. I don't like the mentality the club has at the minute of sell everyone that doesn't hit the ground running and spending hundreds of millions on replacements.

I agree that players need to be given time to adapt. But did he not play 40-odd games last season?
Same goes for Memphis, who was a regular starter for half a season, after which LVG realised he is absolute junk and dropped him to the bench.

Jose is unlikely to keep playing poor performing players as he values his own career and is not willing to risk it. He wants to win at all costs, which means he will find the best performers.
Unfortunately, this means that younger players (not yet in their prime) tend to lose out.

To summarise, last season we had Smalling, Blind, Rojo, Darmian and Valencia as our defensive line. Rojo and Darmian were probably the worst, so we shouldn't be too sad to see Darmian (or Rojo), leave.

I'm not sure how many he played to be honest, although I think we shouldn't look too much into last season given Van Gaal and Mourinho are so different. I just think Darmian has a lot to offer, he looks good when I see him for Italy and I think if Jose gave Darmian a chance he could be great. Like you say though if it backfires Jose loses his job.

Last season shouldn't be used as a barometer of quality against any player. The whole team was absolutely dreadful for the most of it, totally bereft of confidence and the majority of players suffered because of it. IMO, everyone gets a chance to prove themselves under Mourinho* regardless of what happened last season.

*Except Rojo. Good god, he is naff.

And Jones.

So highly rated by the caf. Incredibly average for us. At times he looked very talented defensively, but he was too limited on the ball for a united fullback and with time even his defending got worse and worse.

Hindsight is 20/20. Most here wanted us to avoid Nat Clyne at all costs and go all out for Darmian. We did, and the general consensus was that it was an excellent buy at the time.
I wonder how many of those had actually watched him play though. It's not like Torino are on our screens on a weekly basis.
