Matteo Darmian | LVG confirms he's on his way here for a medical

Luke Shaw is a decent player (not great - not good enough to play for Bayern, Real or Barca), though he may become great.
The issue I have is that he is mostly injured, unfit or fat.
Sometimes players' bodies are designed for pro football and I just get a niggling feeling that Luke Shaw may be sold in a few years for very little money or may walk out on a free transfer.

£30M for L.Shaw (most expensive teenager football player, who happens to be injured most of the time or unfit to play 90 minutes) is bad business, in my book. We got fleeced.
Conversely, I think Memphis (also a player bought for his potential) will become great in a few years time, so I have no issue with his price-tag.
At least with Fellaini, we got our money's worth out of him last season. He played most of the games and was an important player.
Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard were constantly scrutinised for being 'fat' and having irregular footballing physiques but they ended out alright.

If he doesn't it won't be because of incredible level of football in Premier League.
English football is incredibly hard for some players to adapt to.
The football doesn't have to be of the highest quality for this to be apply

I've never seen him play but I wouldn't be surprised if he went on the become the greatest human being that ever lived.

If we can get our full backs on form I reckon we've covered the most glaring issue we've had for the last three seasons.

He ain't bad. I like him. I did what the nerds and the transfer muppets do (at least I hope that's what they do) - I downloaded some matches and scrutinized the fecker. I noticed him last summer at the WC against England and he looked pretty decent. Still think he looks pretty decent.

Hard to tell how he'll adapt and all that, but he's a good player, no doubt about that. Seems to me that he's slightly better defensively (more of a natural defender) than offensively (but has a decent foot, able to hit a decent cross) - which is pretty much what I want, actually, given that our present first choice RB isn't a natural defender at all.

I'm not getting into the Coleman comparisons at all - just saying that Darmian is a good player. Wouldn't cry if we bought him - trusting that LVG has looked at him properly and deemed him fit.

Thats fair enough but it doesnt mean he would be almost 3 times the value of this lad
Well, you said that all things the same you'd pick Coleman. Clearly it's not going to be all things the same.

Im all for backing our players especially the feckwits who piss on Fellaini all the time

I know you do, all too well.

But you've just written off Cuadrado who's been here 6 months whereas Fellaini has been here 6 years. It's bad form to call everyone feckwits every day and then accuse everyone who thinks its a good signing of being blue balled. Or whatever it was.

Either way I shall not be drawn further into a debate with a name caller.

Seriously though, the key here is discipline. If Shaw is disciplined and ambitious enough he will make sure he stays away from the pies. But the key is whether or not he has the mentality to stick to this regime. This is the niggling doubt I have about him. I hope he comes good of course, but he doesn't fill me with much confidence.

He is quite good, all round hard working defender.

Another positive he looks to be superior to Clyne.

If we're getting this guy, hope he's available for the tour.

Good for you

While all football transfers are a gamble and the 'success' rate runs somewhere about 40%, I have few doubts that Shaw will show himself to be a player worthy of those clubs you suggested, but most importantly, worthy of Man Utd.

Out of interest, would you have considered Denis Irwin worthy of those clubs?

This is what confuses me too; start of the season i would have bet my money on converted wingers as fullbacks. However the season progressed and he went on to say mcnair could be our RB for 10 years which confused me because he is a converted centre half. On top of that, rafael a fantstic winger/fullback looks like he isnt wanted and our best LB of the season isnt really the winger type either as he dribbles more centrally (blind) .

On top of that, whenever valencia and shaw did play they wernt exactly hugging the touchlines either.

I think people really need to lose the idea of Rafael as an excellent fullback that just isn't rated by LVG for some personal dislike or not the type of player he likes, it is 2015 not 2012 were people might have been right about Rafa but 3 years down the road I think it is time people realise Rafael just isn't good enough despite what kind of fullback he is. His injurries have contributed to that to a large degree but I think the problem is wider than that. Fabio also didnt work out here at United nor did it at another team, I think Rafael will go down the same path.

I think LVG prefers the converted winger else Jones would be playing Rightback and not Valencia. McNair being played there was an idea he tried out because he needed an alternative with Rafael injurred and not considered good enough on the rightback to Valencia. He tried it and it failed pretty bad after that I don't think McNair played RB too many times anymore.

The fact the fullbacks this season didn't play very offensively is down to LVG searching for us to become more balanced in defence which has sort of become his fetish over the course of the season after the 5-3 fiasco against Leicester. That result really impacted a big part of the season. I guess with some new signings (not only fullback but also DM and CB) he might be a bit more keen on loosening that defensive grip and allow his players to be a bit more adventureous.

Just putting this out there, how do you guys think he compares to Coleman?

Sure, Shaw wasn't worth £28m but my god, am I glad we're the ones that have him instead of our rivals. He's an absolute beast. He just needs to sort his injury problems out.

Why isn't he worth £28 million ? If anyone is worth £28 million - surely it would be a highly talented 18 year old. If he stays with us for 12 years - he will cost us about £2.3 mill each year in transfer fee.

Darmian is top quality and in my opinion better than Coleman. I've followed his progress since he starred against England in the WC and he's a super player. Athletic, comfortable on the ball and defensively very solid.

Delighted with this signing if it comes off and in my opinion United fans will grow to love him.

I feel this is too good/too much sense for this to be true given how fast this has all developed. This has come out of nowhere within the space of a couple of days.

A part of me just thinks that it's all bollocks. I can never trust Sky Italia again after the Vidal business.
