Yea it's strange why fans say he is not good enough. Hummels ia 26, he's got many years on the clock. Look at our form, was any of our players apart from DDG considered quality? Even ashley Young looks half decent under VG, imagine how hummels would fair under VG?

Smalling is by far our best CB at the minute. You guys are supposed to watch us week in, week out and should know better than the MOTD football fans who only rate players based on reputation.
Defensively he is very very good. His real negatives are his injury record, ability on the ball/passing.
Jones, whenever he plays, is all over the place and Rojo can be just as bad, though he may come good.

I think Hummels is a bit overrated but he would almost certainly start if he joined us, and then improve considerably under Van Gaal.
Sounds like some Dortmund fans want us to buy him an Gundogan quickly enough, before we change our minds with the way they are playing

IMO it’s worth the risk. What we have right now is 2 potentially very good CBs in Rojo and Shaw and Smalling who I rate very high. If Hummels settles down he could be the leader at the back and each one of them would complement him well I can imagine. From what I’ve heard his mind seems to be somewhere else right now (similar to Di Maria), but it’s really a rare situation when a team like Dortmund fights to get to the top half of the table. I thought Evans is going to be our main Centre Back because he used to be excellent on the ball and he’s the oldest one, but it hasn’t worked out so I would be happy if Hummels took his place in the team.
Smalling plus one is our best pairing. He did well with Rojo during our winning run, has done well with Jones lately and even Evans had his two best games this season before getting banned playing alongside Smalling.

That was for what, 1 or 2 games? Smalling has been getting plenty of game time and appeared to be LVG's first choice before he got this illness. The majority of United fans would have Smalling in their starting XI too.
If we sign Hummels it seems likely it would be to replace Evans so we have 2 options for both left and right CB.
All I'm saying is that if you look at the way LVG has picked his team when all CBs have been available (recently) then his preferred pairing is Jones and Rojo. In real terms it doesn't matter what you or I think is the best combination, if Smalling is third choice now then he will have a hard fight on his hands if we sign Hummels.

Just leave him, Jones and Rojo have been on the bench for more matches than Smalling, yet Getsme figures that Smalling is third choice. His delusion when it comes to him is really odd.
I'm with you. Samlling is obviously a very good defender when he can stay fit and Hummels just really doesn't look up to it this season. I'd genuinely, hand on my heart, rather not buy Hummels. It would actually annoy me if we spent anywhere near £35 million on this current Hummels. We've seen what happens with reputation vs reality this year with falcao.
He's not third choice but you're right, LVG did prefer to stick with Jones/Rojo at one stretch but if Smalling hadn't missed games through sickness he would've probably kept his place because him and Rojo were our best pairing before that. The only CB who is probably almost guaranteed a start when fit is Rojo only because he's left footed.
I really hope United will sign more German players along the way. They offer solid football standards and LVG have a record of epic fruition during managing them. Mats Hummels is an LVG type player however we should also check out other options in that department but we could really use one experienced defender with a World Cup trophy.

I can't let the Smalling is 'third choice' thing slide though. There isn't a third choice center back because LVG clearly priorities Rojo and Evans to LCB when they're fit. Smalling and Jones compete for RCB and fill in at left when Rojo and Evans are unavailable. The most ridiculous thing about this whole argument is that Hummels and Smalling wouldn't even be competing for the same spot!

Agreed. That’s exactly what I was hoping for when van Gaal signed for us.
What’s so hard to understand here? If Smalling was our number one defender then he would walk straight back into the team in the same way Rooney or Carrick would, he clearly hasn’t. If he was as good as some on here make out then he would walk straight into the England team, he doesn’t.
Oh, by the way, Smalling has started 18 games this season, Jones 19 and Rojo 22 (despite signing 5 games into the season)
Who knows what’s going to happen mate, personally I want Smalling to stay, but if I had the choice between him and Hummels then there is no contest, Hummels every time. As for Rojo, I think we will see the best of him next season.

Rojo and Jones have too been on the bench before getting in the team after injury..This is part of LVG's philosophy but only our captains arent under this rule.
Not talking about matches played, matches been on tbhe bench. And Rojo has played LB for us, were talking about the CB position.

Well you say if he was our 1st cb he would walk straight in the team, that isnt true because it goes against LVG's philosophy. Only the captains walk straight into the team.
Jones and Rojo may have more matches played, but I wouldnt be surpised if Smalling has been injured more. And Rojo has started some matches on LB, so that hasnt got value because it's not about being 1st, 2nd, or 3rd choice CB.
So we're going to spend probably 35-40 million quid on a player with the hope that he won't be as shit as he's been since the world cup?
Not a chance of that. He's been our first choice when fit and I don't think thats debatable at all.
England aren't blessed with good DM's either. Hasn't topped Carrick from spending most of his time being dropped entirely or being on the bench. Didn't stop Jones from playing in midfield ahead of Carrick. That must mean Carrick is overrated right? Scholes was played out of position in favour of Gerrard and Lampard. That means Scholes was overrated as well I guess?
Hummels was all over the place again today. His decline this season, like maybe of Dortmund's player, has been remarkable.
And a defender who is better than what we have got
Hummels our 3rd best CB if he signs, apparently.
