Mats Hummels

Have you already booked your tour of Europe taking in Germany, Holland, Turin, Madrid and the south coast of England?

Don't be daft, just bought a few more monitors and coded a Twitter bot.

Read the comments that Hummels himself made a couple months ago, about him being able to count on one hand the games that he has been pain free since the World cup, that worries me a lot. He seems to be suffering from some severe tendinitis, something that ruined Hargreaves career at United.

If this is still the case then we may soon redefine our defensive targets, again. Shame that so many potential targets are not a safe bet.

Hummels, Strootman, Gundogan... doubts to this day.

Really? I don't want the club to go anywhere near a situation like that again.. Although, we can assume that they are doing their due diligence here.

IF he can get back to his best he would be my number 1 choice in case we need a CB. However, given his performances this season his price tag seems a bit hefty...

You say that, yet we were in for Vermaelen last summer....

Was trying to find the article on Soccernet.com to link it here, but could not find it.

Gundogan is one of the most injury-prone players in football - he has played roughly 75 league matches in 4 years - he is NOT what I want regardless of how talented he is
Considering that he was one year out, that' not that bad. 28, 28, 1 and 18 this season. On total, he has 165 appearances (174 if you add the matches for Germany), from those 125 being in the league. It is not bad for a 24 years old player.

Hardly a steal. He's very injury prone and hasn't been at his best for a while.

Hummels is my dream (realistic target) but I think they're asking too much at £40m.

I thought it was 40m Euro, which (in pounds) will be around as much as we paid for Herrera.

40m pounds for him would have been a good price before this season, but Hummels hasn't been great on this season to command that price.

Sorry I meant €. He's expressed his wish to eventually leave and play in the PL which should bring down the price. I think we can get him a good bit cheaper to be honest.

Paying for Hummels around the same price as for Shaw or Herrera is hardly difficult to imagine. After all he is a better player than them, more important for his team, captain of his team, world cup winner and has a far bigger reputation than any of them.

The exchange rate is looking pretty good at the moment for purchases on the continent.

I'd prefer we pay the 40m euros and get him in as soon as the window opens. The key this summer is to wrap up business as soon as possible with our new signings integrated into the system and ready to go for the start of the season. Can't have a start like we did this season.

Plus he'll need to adapt to our possession system as well. It's different to the counter attacking system which he plays for Dortmund, albeit similar to the German set up.

That's a reasonable fee for him. I do agree we should wrap up all transfers the week the window opens to get the players in and acclimated before summer training starts.

Exactly.

Would love if we do what we did in 2007. Obviously the Tevez saga dragged on long that year, but that obviously wasn't our fault and something we couldn't control

We can do that before the window opens, and just register them when it's open.

I see a lot of people worrying about Hummels' ability to stay fit. If indeed he has a dodgy injury record, we'd be mugs not to look elsewhere. What we need is a mainstay at the heart of defence, someone to add a bit of stability in the midst of the fitness clusterphuck that is our current pool of defenders. If given a choice between a very good CB capable of playing 50 games a season, and a world class one capable of playing 30, I'd have the former.

That would brilliant, then we could simply close the transfer forum for the summer. :)

And missed the potentially all time great .gif by Olly, Jeston, and co.? No..no..no!!

Real Madrid have already bought Danilo from Porto.

Risky though, imagine if he breaks his leg next week.

Imagine if Hummels breaks his leg the 3rd September, you can't think about transfers with that mentality or you won't buy anyone.

Yeah, but then he would break his leg for us and not for Dortmund!

Another centre back who is going to spend long periods of time out injured is the last thing we need. We need an impeccable physical specimen, someone with bones like steel rods and muscles as hard to tear as granite.

This. I got a massive hard on for Hummels, but all this talk of him being injury prone is quite concerning.

His leg is broken it's the same thing, let's say it's not the 3rd september but the day just before his first training session.

In his last 5 seasons he's played in:
33
42
46
42
34

Doesn't seem that disastrous.

Out of interest (and if it's not too much hassle) can you compare that against our current centre backs?

Exactly, Bundesliga only has 34 rounds of play I think.

30/34 - 2009/2010
32/34 - 2010/2011
33/34 - 2011/2012
28/34 - 2012/2013
23/34 - 2013/2014
20/29 - 2014/2015

Doesn't really look likes he's been injured much. Although him playing a lot for the last 6 years doesn't have to mean he's not injury prone.

To be fair, before this season, Hummels had averaged 85%+ of Dortmund's games including the run from 2010 to 2013 where he was almost unanimously considered as a premier central defender and appeared in 130 club matches over 3 seasons. Prior to the ligament tear in his knee which has troubled him on and off in the last year or so, his only significant injury was an ankle tear which sidelined him for about a month.

Not a blanket rule but there have been a lot of footballers who made excellent recoveries from similar knee ligament damage related injuries. Most prominently Ruud Van Nistelrooy who was out for almost the entire 2000 season after rupturing his ACL while training at PSV :

Turned out just fine in the end apart from delaying his transfer to United.

As for signing players who have squeaky clean medical records, it's not an ironclad method either. Luke Shaw for example had a healthy stretch of games at Southampton but has been held back by a series of niggling injuries this season. We can't predict future injuries really.

If Hummels is cleared by United's medical staff and Van Gaal (who is a staunch advocate of high fitness levels) is satisfied with his reports, then that's good enough for me. It's slim pickings for good central defenders these days, and there are very few who can offer his levels of experience, composure and defensive nous.

Including cups etc in the last 5 seasons,

Jones: 28, 41, 24 39, (20 this season)

Smalling: 33, 30, 22, 38, (23 this season)

Evans: 21, 40, 30, 25, (11 this season)

Obviously have to factor in that Ferdinand and Vidic were still here as well.
