Mats Hummels

He is the only realistic world class defender we can get imo, we have to buy him either in January or Summer. He's actually not even injury prone if you go by his stats, he's averaged well over 40 games a season although he picked up a few injuries last season and still played 30 plus games. Our defenders can barely manage 20 games a season, so he is already a upgrade there.

Subotic or Howedes are nowhere near the quality of Hummels.

Dortmund don't look like making CL football any time soon and even if they turn it around we should strike in January before it looks possible! Huge fan of Hummels, would be a quality addition to the Gaalacticos.

Yeah, like that Real side of the early 2000s. Locked for the top 6. What a team!;)

There's still no indication that he will leave any time soon and he doesn't strike me as someone who will jump ship.

Evans & Smalling both have around 120 appearances in the last 4 seasons. Jones around 100, so a tad more than 20 games a season from each of them. This season Hummels has been a bit gash & As far as remember he did state he wasn't going anywhere in the summer. So as for him being available, I doubt that very very much.

I think Höwedes is a better and more realistic option for us. I'd really like to see him here.

I think that is the question: who are the realisitic alternatives for us?
The job description is for a centre-half with experience & leadership qualities who can cut it in the englisg game (and preferably stay fit for more than a handful of consecutive games).
Aside from Hummels, what would the short-list look like?

(and we are probably going to end up with Vlaar, for this transfer window at least).

I think a lot of players (and their wife's) would prefer London over Manchester
Similarly I bet a lot of players (and their wife's) would fancy Milan over turin.

So why are Chelsea the only London team that have consistently beaten us to transfer targets? I know these people prefer the city of London to Manchester, but im pretty sure more players would rather wear the red of United than the red of Arsenal

Those rumours of Hummels preferring Arsenal don't say why or give any named sources. Arsenal does have a couple of Germans and the London draw, but I would be shocked and disappointed if he's available and he picks Arsenal over us.

Hummels and Vertonghen would be my dream CB pair for us

Vertonghen can't even get in the Spurs team ahead of Kaboul and Fazio atm can he? Or is he injured?

As for Hummels, I'm still not convinced he's anywhere near as good as his reputation would have you believe.

Vertonghen has played in 3 out of the last 4 Tottenham matches i think
But it seems Pochettino and Vertonghen are having 1-2 problems

But Hummels and Vertonghen are anyway transfers for next summer.....so long i give Rojo the time to show what he can do

Have you seen Fazio and Kaboul play lately :lol::lol: I think Vertonghen and the boss have fallen out, but hes played a few games lately

Yesterday it was reported in the papers that Hummels was going to turn down United and LvG because he wanted to play for Arsenal. Today it is being reported he wont join Arsenal as he wants to win things.

He's injury prone and not better than any of Evans, Smalling or Jones. His WC performances were the best he played for quite some time and Schalke really seems to be his level as he can have very average games.

He was one of the best CBs in the league for me last season and at times looks a great defender. He's more than capable of being the back up option for us or even the go to option...more so than Vermaelen who is still constantly injured and was reportedly on our radar.

Nah, he's generally ahead of Fazio - got rested the other day for some bizarre reason but I don't thinsk that'll last.

Kaboul is undroppable for some baffling reason.

Hes captain lol

Let's face it, he's the most marketable defender (and one of the best) on the market... he'll end up at Real (or Barca if they are allowed to sign people).

Like I said... baffling.

Serioualy, imagine being a Spurs fan. You go into the season with all this optimistic talk about taking the next step to be right up there at the top... but all along, deep down, you know it's bullshit, because your captain in Younes Kaboul!:(

As opposed to Hummels who has been criminally awful for quite some time then.

Obviously, we will have to get our share of Germans together if we want to lure anybody who is Nationalmannschaft level. If we are able to lure Spaniards, Argentines and a Colombian in Manchester, I don't see why we can't lure at least 2 Germans.

@GlastonSpur

Of course, we all know he won't darken the doors of redcafe until Spurs get through their latest crisis (or Lamela scores another rabona) which means he's hopefully gone for the season, at least.

I wouldn't be so sure... it's entirely likely that they fire their manager in a month or so, and the new one wins a couple of matches, prompting Spurs fans across the globe to celebrate the start of their age of dominance.

Yeah, which is exactly my point, if he cant even get in the team ahead of those two then that should sound a pretty loud warning siren.

forget about past generations, where does he stand on the list of defenders around today? Who's better than him right now, who is he better than?

Not many, which is why he would be a great signing. His constant injuries are a concern though. With Phil Jones and our medical team around, I would be worried about his presence.

Its not his ability that has him not playing though

He really hasn't. Höwedes has never been on his level, nor has he been as consistent as Hummels and that's coming from someone who likes Schalke. Recently, Hummels' performances haven't been as good as they've been before, but clearly injuries played their part in that. Dortmund as a whole are struggling, which is also a factor. His mistakes the seasons before have been completely blown out of proportion on the Caf and when he's finally injury free again, I'd suggest some should watch him more often. By the way, which centre-half hasn't been called overrated these days? Thiago Silva and Sergio Ramos have had their fair share of mistakes as well. This generation is just not as good as the Nesta, Maldini, Ferdinand, Stam generation, which is also down to way teams defend these days.

This. Very good post.

Considering how they kept "changing" the rules to accommodate attacking players in the last 5-6 years, defenders can't defend nowadays in the same manner as their predecessors did. Could anybody imagine Messi being able to get past through Maldini, Cafu, Costacurta, Stam and Nesta if the little guy had to play along with the rules/refereeing of the time (late 1990s to early 2000s)?

I think Hummels is an incredibly overrated defender and the fact that Man Utd fans are clambering over the possibility of signing him is stupid. He's not available, quite obviously, and if he was he wouldn't be coming here. This has been one of the most pointless muppet saga's on the cafe.

Well, that's like your opinion. In my opinion he is a very good defender, easily better than Höwedes and we would be lucky to have him given our current lot. The posts you quoted had nothing to do with the possibility of Hummels actually joining United. I'm never going to understand why people have a problem with other people on an internet forum speculating about something they love.

Hummels is absolute quality, I don't think its fair to rate him in Dortmund's current situation.

He's such a good asset on the counter too as his long range passing is superb.
