I'm going to go against the grain here, but I'm still not convinced he's as fantastic as most make out. He's obviously good, but I'm yet to be convinced he's right up there with the likes of Rio/Vida at their pomp.
I'd happily take him, Subotic or Sokratis Papa. Just give Dortmund 30m and let them pick who.
He isn't close to Rio/Vidic in pomp but 25 is still young for a centre back. Also, are any current centre backs close to Rio/Vidic at their best? Maybe Thiago Silva but I'm not sure he's as good.

With the exception of Thiago Silva, I don't think there's anyone out there close to Rio at his peak.
Not even Thiago Silva or Kompany are as good as the likes of a Rio/Vida 'at their pomp'.
I agree in general, but I don´t think Hummels has hit his ceiling yet. He is only 25 after all, and I would take him over the 25 year old version of Ferdinand.
Made some excellent defensive blocks this game, but I can see why some question his positional play at times. He is still an outstanding defender though.
Combination of strength and great German precision. He would be a final solution for our defense problems.

You should not focus on Hummels at all (similar to the Fabregas saga last Summer). He is not going anywhere this Summer.
True that - no-one could touch that partnership. Best we'll probably ever see at United & thats why we need to splash the cash on top-class CB's, because Smalling & Jones dont even have a 1/3 of their quality & thats been the catalyst for our success!
We have the goal-keepin area sorted for the next 10 years or more - same as LB & possibly RB, but at CB - we're shite if Evans isnt fit to play. Its a shame that lad's been carrying more knocks than a shit 1970's comedian's joke book..

Mangala would be awesome too. He's not even 25 and already bossing... Hummels with Mangala would probably become even a bigger hit and both players so far are not ruling out the move in the future.

The difference between them is Mangala actually being open to a move this summer, while Hummels/his father (agent) and Dortmund´s officials categorically ruling out a transfer this year.
I always thought Hummels was unavailable... I truly hope we get either Benetia or Mangala, Benetia being the better of the two IMO.
Mangala is not a ball playing CB like Hummels. He is more of a Vidic style of defender imo. probably that's why we are not in for him.

Those 2 are on my wishlist this summer. Dont think Hummels will move this year though - he's said as much, but next year it could be on. Can we wait til next summer & just scrape it with what we've got here already? Thats a big no from me. Mangala is definitely on the move & allegedly prefers us over everyone else, so its a no-brainer to me, for us to get him in.
I dont really know much about Benatia in all honesty Danny, but i know he's very highly rated & very experienced - we need that big time. I havent seen him linked to us either - its been City thats been associated with him all the time.. Wankers!
Thats why they'd be brilliant together at United. One's a friggin wall ala Vida & the other loves to bring the ball out of defence ala Rio. Both are fantastic in the air too..
United should let the muppets on here sort the transfers out - we know whats best for the club & who at the club needs to be Chloroformed, bundled into a van & taken on a wee road trip to the mountains..
50m EUR would be a good deal for us IMO. We would have one of the best defenders in the world for the next 7-8 years.
If you don't need the money though, you shouldn't even fancy the idea of selling him for any price right now. It isn't that his value will decrease for a year or two. I can see a club getting him only if Hummels pushes for it, but he doesn't look that kind of player.
Got no reservations about his defending now. Seen him in a slightly different system and has been extremely solid. Superb all round and probably the best defender at the WC so far

He's France's 4th choice CB behind Koscielny who is good, Sakho who is poor on the ball and Varane who had a season interupted by injury.
Porto also had a poor season and Mangala didn't look particularly good at the back.
Mangala is a prospect that might come good, but you'll have to spend a fortune to find out. Hummels has proven he's the real deal
Mangala must be one of the most overrated players. It is a good example of players whom the majority haven't watch them play and think that they are that good.
He may eventually become good, obviously, but right now he isn't even in the level of Evans. He isn't bossing anything except some media headlines.
