I have heard he is prone to the odd mistake but I still think he would be a great signing.

He had his fair shares of blunders in the past but than again which defender doesn't make the odd mistake now and then?
Against Portugal he was immense though, defensively a rock, good game opening passes and a threat during standards, it was pretty much as good as it gets for a CB.
I just hope he won't miss more than one game because a Hummels in his current form will be vital to our chances of winning the WC.
He is a brilliant CB and he would be ideal for United. A ball playing CB that can defend. Exactly what Van Gaal would want.
He would be an ideal candidate to become our new general in the back 4.
He was immense today. He didnt let Portugal do anything in the box. Cleared crosses, blocked shots. Passed very well and scored a screamer! Hope he is fit and ready for the next game.
My favorite CB and only Thiago Silva is better than him at the moment. Would love to see him here, although is very unlikely that it'll ever happen.

Not quite. He's simply said he doesn't think anything will happen this summer. That's not definitive.
Before yesterday I thought of him as "pretty boy" defender. That is to say I didnt think he could get down and dirty but it was his tackle which led to Almeida's departure.
We had reports off Thomas Vermaelen agreeing personal terms with us, maybe Woodward knows that Hummels is not leaving this summer.

Vincent Kompany and Sergio Ramos also for me. Subotic is the better defender for me but what Hummels can do with the ball takes him clear. He would be a great signing though.
I like him, but he is not fast more than Blanc or David Weir.

Lacking in pace and prone to dropping clangers. Not worth £30m+ IMHO.
hummels-evans would probably make the sexiest football playing centreback pairing in europe
Except Loic Remy would just run straight through them. Love him as a defender but feel he is far to slow for a top premierleague team.
That's how they come these days with certain emphasis on high lines and ball play.
I honestly think he'd struggle in the premier league, I think Subotic would be a better buy.
that's a concern of course, hummels is not the quickest, btw how hard or tough hummels is? i mean we all know evans sometimes can be out muscled by lack of skill but tough strikers. vidic is not the quickest but he compensates that with his ability to read situations and of course his mental and physical toughness as well.if hummels got the ability to read the game and got good strength then pace should not be a problem.
defensively there might be some concerns but as 2 ball playing defenders..it just doesn't get better isn't it?

I rate him, but I definitely don't think he's the quite top bracket signing people think he is. As many have pointed out, he seems to make one serious screamer every game, and his lack of pace could cost him in the PL.
Having lost Vidic and Ferdinand, I'd take Hummels into our ranks without a second thought. But I wouldn't expect him to be a million miles ahead of our current three - he'd be thrown into the mix to fight for his place.
Anyway, I'm not sure he'll move. If I was him, an offer from Barca is the only one I'd seriously consider and I'd probably leave it another year to see how their imminent reshaping goes first.

He would be a significant upgrade on what we have and would quickly rise as defensive star, im thinking along the lines of Kompany, Vidic.
Yes I think hes that good. The very best CB add goals from set pieces to their game and he has that ability, combined with his ability to start attacks from the back hes a natural successor to Rio.

I don't think that any of them are as good as Mats. Both of them do a mistake every other game.
I think that the closest thing to Hummels was Pique on 2008-2011 when he was regarded as one of the best CB around.

Ok.There's only so far that reading the game takes you - a lack of pace is still a weakness. Besides, he's not given much signs of an especially good reading of the game. He's ok, but he's not got that quality that Rio did of just always seeming to know where the ball is going to go. And yes, Vidic was slower, but then Vidic was a much more convincing defender in general. If you're the 'hard as nails' one in a partnership, you can afford to be a bit slower, but the thinky ball-playing one needs to be fast.

And who would be better than him? The overrated Kompany? There is a lack of good CB on the league and I really think that Hummels is better than any of EPL defenders.

The other point is that for LVG it is very important that CB is a good passer and you can't go better than Hummels for that. Add to that, he is still only 25 and will become even better. Would be my dream to see him play here and I think that even for 40m, he would still be a terrific signing. Between, he is miles better than any of our CB, so would be an instant starter.

Kompany got schtick on here this season for a few high-profile mistakes. Hummels makes one of those in every single important game, but gets away with it because people recognise that he's such an offensive, ball-playing sort of CB.
Based on last season's form I'd rate Kompany, Koscielny, Cahill and Distin higher than him. All four of those were generally rock solid last season. I know a lot of people are enamoured of Hummels because he brings the ball forward - which owes a great deal to Dortmund's system, in which he is supposed to do so - but when it comes down to it he needs to be able to actually defend much more reliably before you can start throwing superlatives around about him.
Koscielny, in particular, is probably actually just as good with the ball and going forward, but also a better defender.
