Juan Mata move to Manchester United on hold as Atletico Madrid tempt Moyes with Filipe Luis and Diego Costa
Atletico Madrid are ready to offer striker Diego Costa and defender Filipe Luis to David Moyes if Manchester United drop their attempt to sign Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata
Atlético Madrid are hoping to hijack
Manchester United's attempts to sign Juan Mata by offering David Moyes first option on striker Diego Costa and Brazilian full-back Filipe Luis if he withdraws from the race for the
Chelseamidfielder.
United have been given encouragement that a £37 million bid for Mata will be accepted by Chelsea, despite Jose Mourinho's preference for the Spain midfielder to remain at Stamford Bridge.
However, with Atlético determined to bolster their push for the Spanish title by adding Mata to Diego Simeone's squad, the Madrid outfit are prepared to hand United the chance to secure options on Costa and Luis, the £18 million-rated left-back who has been repeatedly scouted by Moyes's staff in recent weeks.
Although no bid had been lodged by United as of Tuesday night, Chelsea were expecting an imminent formal offer from Old Trafford for Mata, with intermediaries hopeful of a breakthrough in negotiations for the 25-year-old player.
However, with United manager Moyes determined to add a top-class left-back to his squad this month, the
Premier League champions could be receptive to an agreement with Atlético if it paved the way for a deal for Luis.
Costa, second only to
Cristiano Ronaldo in the La Liga scoring charts this season with 19 goals, has also been monitored by United, but the Brazil-born forward is understood not to be a priority target.
While Mata is keen to move to Old Trafford, the prospect of a return to Spain in the build-up to the World Cup finals this summer is also appealing to the former Valencia player.
With United identifying a left-back and central midfielder as their twin priorities during the January transfer window, the prospect of securing the 28-year-old Luis could prompt Moyes to alter his course on Mata.
Although the former Deportivo La Coruña defender was out of action when Moyes attended Atlético's Champions League clash against Porto last month, the Scot has since sent first-team coach Phil Neville and United scouts to monitor the full-back.
Moyes has ruled out a move for Real Madrid's Fabio Coentrao and has abandoned efforts to sign Everton's Leighton Baines, while the Southampton teenager Luke Shaw is deemed to be too expensive at his £30 million valuation.
With Chelsea monitoring Costa as a potential solution to their search for a centre-forward, a deal with Atlético could also appeal to Mourinho, whose long-term interest in Costa could be used as leverage in any agreement to offload Mata to the Vicente Calderon on loan with a view to a permanent transfer.
With United insisting that Wayne Rooney will not be sold to Chelsea, Costa has emerged as a proven alternative for Chelsea.
Mourinho, meanwhile, is prepared to allow Mata to move to United, but the Stamford Bridge manager wants the player personally to tell him that he wants to go to Old Trafford before sanctioning any transfer.
The final decision on whether to sell Mata is being left to Mourinho and the Portuguese insists that he will only act once the player has approached him.
Atlético want to take Mata on loan with an option to buy the 25-year-old at the end of the season and sending the player back to Spain would be preferable to Mourinho, particularly if Chelsea can secure first option on Costa in return.
