Mata | Mourinho says it's just a Mata of time

He was magical last year at White Hart Lane.

It really is unbelievable Mourinho isn't playing him.

Well if we lose this one it just shows doesnt it.

Last seaosn 2-4 - Mata plays

This one 1-??? Mata doesnt play.

Not only did he play he was the best player on the pitch by a mile. I understand that Mourinho might think that Mata won't contribute as much defensively, meaning other players have to make up for it, but I'm not sure that Oscar's attacking contribution is enough to think that Mata can be left out. Mata is Chelsea's best player, and in my opinion, you play around your best players.

Hopefully today was enough ( I know it was only 1 assist) to make sure Mata starts more games.

Its no good worrying so much about the teams defensiveness when you aren't scoring and are still conceding ( albeit less) anyway.

Bit of a coincidence that Mata and Luiz were the ones left out this week when they were rumoured to be offered as part of a bit for Rooney...

Why would we buy him to waste him on the wing?

He was very good for Chelsea cutting in from the right. Sort of what Januzaj did today when he was moved there. Except Mata will consistently be able to deliver the final ball.

I don't see why Chelsea would even contemplate selling him to us though.

Still can't really believe Mourinho doesn't rate him.

Would Chelsea sell to us anyway? Probably not, but I'd love him here.

One of the best in the league last year and would be a great buy for many clubs.

Only we would be that retarded. Buy an attacking midfielder and expect him to perform on the wing.

Mata is a lot more versatile IMO and he's shown before he can perform really well on the wing consistently. He's a lot more of a winger then Ozil, Kagawa or David Silva are. He's more direct as well then Kagawa so he'd fit us well on the opposite side of Januzaj.

Mata wont go to one of our rivals obviously, and I think he will go back to spain, or possibly PSG. Shame as I do like the guy, but he clearly isnt as good all round as we all thought. Oscar has excelled this season and is a better all rounder, Willian has shown what hes capable of and Hazard speaks for himself. Mata would be good to keep untill the Summer ideally though so we can rotate with him as a squad player when the FA cup and CL games return.

Its worth remembering during Matas time here we were very average and inconsistent in the league. Theres more to players than just the silky skills assists and play that we admire so much.

Its no coincidence that with Mata the game was 0-0 and then after 30 minutes of Oscar and Willian it was 0-3.

Part of the reason for his poor form is because he was clearly seen as surplus to requirements by Mourinho from day one.

Maybe but its the old Nani and Kagawa argument again isnt it.

When they do play and are poor its said that they've played poor because they've not been playing, or given a consistent run out. I have no doubt Jose will have been watching our games form the past 2 years and seen both Mata and Oscar and made his mind up on that basis. At first it looked like a dodgy decision, but now its looking like the right one, but as I said before it would be a shame to see him go as he is a nice person, and a great player for the cup competitions.

He can hardly see his time as a failure though, 1 ECL, 1 Fa Cup, and 1 EL in 2 seasons is a great haul.

It is looking like the right one but you could have made a case for Mata being PotY last season, and that was with Suarez and Bale being brilliant. He's a fantastic footballer. Although this obviously would't have happened I think if you kept Benitez as manager he would have carried on being as influential.

There's no chance they'll sell to us unless it involves Rooney, but i'd love him here.

Sorry, but that's an astonishingly poor analysis of Mata. How exactly is it fair to judge him as not being as good all-round as others on the basis of half a season under a manager who never rated him from the start. In terms of productivity last season, he was absolutely sensational.

Had Rafa come to the same conclusion as Mourinho, you'd all be calling for his head. You have other good attacking players, but to have made little to no effort to integrate Mata into the squad is borderline criminal from Mourinho. Here's a player who can play across the pitch, can get 40 a season in goals and assists and is an absolute dream to manage in terms of his attitude, and he's being jettisoned.

Strange.

Jose obviously wouldnt have judged him on this season alone, he will have watched him since he came here.

Apparently its something along the lines of Mata not being very good defensively and with his workrate. Whereas Oscar pops up everywhere, being strong, really taking the game by the scruff Maat is more purely an attacking threat. Hence the last 2 seasons we won cups but came relatively nowhere in the league.

Hang on - are you equating your improved league performance this season with Oscar replacing Mata? Utter madness.

It's conceivable that your results would've been just as good with Mata the number one, ahead of Oscar.

Its quite possible, who knows? All you can say is Oscar is playing over Mata and we are doing excellently. Anything else is hypothesis, but it seems the most likely answer.

Fair.

All I know is that Mata was undeniably brilliant for Chelsea last season - according to stats I'm looking at, he got 20 goals and 35 assists. That's insane.

Against this backdrop, I can't help but feel he's been harshly treated.

He'll go elsewhere and continue to be a revelation.

Mata would be great here, bit more creativity in the side and will certainly give us more options than just hoping one of Valencies crosses actually lands to a red shirt..

Not unless rooney went in the opposite direction

They win the league if that happens. Tbh, it's not going to be us this season now, so does it really matter?

In the long run, would a 25 year old Mata for a 28 year old Rooney be terrible business?
