Manchester United boss David Moyes is keeping a close eye on Juan Mata with a view to making a January bid for the Chelsea midfielder.
The Spaniard has been frozen out by boss Jose Mourinho so far this season, and has made just two Premier League appearances this season – both of which ended in him being substituted.
Many Blues fans have called for the player to be included in the Blues’ starting XI, and he played the full 90 minutes against Swindon Town in the League Cup on Tuesday.
However, that is unlikely to satisfy his desire to play every game for the club, and SportsDirect News has learned United are monitoring his situation.
Boss David Moyes spoke of a need to add players who can “go right into the team” on Wednesday, and Mata fits the mould.
The ex-Everton boss is desperate to inject some much-needed creativity into his midfield, after failing in bids for Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas in the summer.
He is understood to have cash left over from his summer budget and would be backed by the club’s owners, the Glazers, were he to pursue a move for Mata.
Mourinho has long insisted the star is not for sale and remains a key part of his plans, but United are ready to test the Portuguese’s resolve with a bid worth in excess of £25 million for the 25-year-old.
