Would Mount agree to join all those “interested “ clubs? Any club can pay 30m transfer fee but no club can match a 200+k weekly wages for Mount. That sort of wage would destroy the existing wage structure of all PL clubs. That’s the advantage we have to use to negotiate better.
Yeah, fair point, only a few can afford the fee and the wages.

The reason he is rejecting Chelsea offer is because he wants 250k, why would he move here for less?

Mount is still on pennies by all accounts. He signed his current deal while still at Derby on loan. He won’t be getting £250k a week straight out the gate with anyone.

He could of course get that if he leaves as a free agent.

After years of massively overspending, clubs see us coming and think they can rinse us. After caving in to Ajax's demands for Antony it's no wonder Chelsea think they can take the piss
The Antony deal set a horrible precedent and undid some of the work that was done in changing our reputation of serial overpayers.

Its the most overcooked transfer fee in history to me. No bidding war, no English tax, no release clause, no real hype for the player, it was just a ridiculous and desperate transfer all over. He was worth no more than half his fee.

Re Mount, I really like him as a player but we should be prepared to walk away for anything over £50m in my opinion and that includes add-ons.

I guess were we'll disagree is your assessment that he was poor in that video. We'll have to wait and see if/when he arrives.
I didn't think he was poor, to be honest. He was fine, but, with how much he'd cost and how I personally don't think he's suited to the role we are in need of in midfield taken into account, the performance just didn't, shall we say, fill me with enthusiasm.

Fair enough.

If Erik pulls another Antony and forces the club to just pay whatever Chelsea asks instead of moving on to another option I’m just gonna lose all hope in his recruitment ability
The thing is that a good structure has people above him who control that a lot more. Of course he should have a say, but the people above should have a list and prices and pivot when they don't think it's a fair price/when it'll impact other signings

Who’s the better player between Mount and Mac Allister? Don’t think either are world class but both pretty decent. Think Liverpool will get the better deal price wise though.

I agree, but all evidence with our recruitment seems to point to the contrary and that ETH has the vast majority of power in that room. Which is stupid, as even the best managers don’t have that type of power these days because it’s simply too difficult to do both jobs at an elite level.

It really started with the Antony deal last year and relentless De Jong pursuit, and this Mount deal seems like it’s going to end up the same way where Erik insists so Murtough just shells a ridiculous fee that Chelsea takes and laughs all the way to the bank.

Have a day off!

The problem is we are never going to get a fair deal because of how bad we’ve been managed in the past

A club see us coming and start rubbing their hands

Chelsea aren’t doing us any favours Mount will cost 70m I’d bet Liverpool get him for 60m

They play in slightly different positions, Mount being more of an AM/forward who can drop to an 8. Mac being an 8 who can operate at 6 or 10.

But I see them at similar quality levels. Good not great. Yes, Liverpool will get better value for money, as usual.

Well we can always start somewhere to show we are not going to continue to be mugs on every deal going forward and that can be with Mount. Everyone also knows that Chelsea need to sell to balance their books and with Mount only having a year left on his deal, they have a choice, make 20m than their obscene valuation or get nothing a year from now.

It's going to take a bit of guts from the powers that be to pivot to hopefully other targets while not ideal, can still help us improve going into next season. ETH constantly says that we have to have the right strategy and the includes making sure we are not going to over pay every time. It's not a sustainable way to build a squad because we would end up spending most of our budget on one or two players when we may need more.

I really hope we don't succumb to our previous operations and just pay the asking price to get this done. Hes a marvelous player and someone I would desperately like to see in our squad, but if they won't cave on 70MM, fine...we move on. I'm usually not overly bothered by transfer fees, but the madness needs to stop. 70MM for a player on his last year should be a bonafide superstar. Mount is very good, but he is not that...

Yeah you’d hope just one time we tell a club to feck themselves and move on to another target of similar profile.

Can you imagine how giddy we’d be if we sold Sancho or Maguire for 80m this summer and recouped the entire fee? It would feel like a miracle around here

MacAllister going for 45 mils sets the marker i think. Fee cannot be more than that for sure.

That is actually a wild take. He’s like the perfect squad player. Plays multiple positions across the backline and DM to a decent level. In would hate to lose him. He can be error prone at times but he starts a game like once every 4 weeks or so. Every time he’s given a run of starts he’s always one of our most reliable players. Inter have been chasing him for like 18 months now.

He CAN be error prone ? CAN ? :)

What I mean is, yeah he commits errors sometimes but they usually happen when he's thrown into the lineup after getting 15 minutes across 4 weeks of football. He's one of our most reliable performers when he's given a couple of starts in a row. I actually would not let him go at £25M. He is far more useful to us than whoever we could get at that price to replace him. We would probably have to pay upwards of £35M to find someone as good and as versatile as Chalobah.

I watch a fair bit of PL football (probably too much!) and have to say that MM has never really impressed me that I would like him at United. I remember when Mr. Waistcoat kept playing him for England the Caf was disgusted, saying he wasnt fit to wear the shirt (preference was Maddison). He would probably bring an improvement to the squad and might come good - in the meantime he represents a step in the right direction without bringing us to the desired destination.

He hasn’t been off the boil for 18 months. I’ve posted his numbers for the second half of last season on here.

Chelsea fans seem to think he has been. And these are fans that don’t want to sell him. So I’m more inclined to take their word on his form rather then United fans that don’t watch him week in week out.

If there's no solid, available player anywhere in the world that can do what ETH wants from Mount, but for around £40-50m, then might as well not have a scouting department. Chelsea can feck off if they're sticking to the alleged £70m fee.

I’ve thought that about a lot of our targets.

Look for example at Kane, Rice and Mount, there simply HAS to be players who could have the impact of those (less so Kane I’ll admit) from around the world at a fraction of the cost.

Same with the likes of Sancho, Maguire, AWB - you can’t tell me that a scouting network that reportedly scours the world for talent, decided our ONLY options for CB, RW and RB were those, and that there was no other viable options.

Can someone please explain the thread title to me? We’ve agreed personal terms but not a fee? Why are we even allowed to talk to the player if a fee hasn’t been agreed?

I stand corrected but I think once you are in the last year of your contact you are allowed to talk to other clubs and your club cannot stop you.

The title is misleading and untrue

It's based on a piece by Ducker, I believe, where the title said "personal terms agreed" (which isn't written by the journalist) - the actual piece just said that personal terms won't be an issue

Last six months and that applies to foreign clubs only.

Anyway talking to the player and agreeing terms before the fee is pretty much the norm these days. Same rules still exist but using agents and other intermediates help clubs do this without technically breaking the rules.

Because we haven't agreed anything. People just know that us meeting his wage demands won't be an issue so it's hardly sticking their reputation on the line is it?

It’s how almost every transfer worksthese days. Clubs talk to player agents, figure out whether they’d move and roughly how much they’d want plus fees, etc. Then they talk to the other club last.

Not supposed to be that way but it’s how it works in 95% of transfers.

One year left though. If Mason really wants us then tell him to come to us for free or force Chelsea to accept £35m for him. Simple.
He can't force Chelsea to do anything. And if other clubs offer more he'd just go there. Hes not a die hard United fan, we are just a preferred choice if all clubs were on the table.

Agree. Personal terms have rarely been an issue with United. Doesn't make sense to even mention it. Frankly, it doesn't mean anything if the fee isn't agreed.
