I'm excited as well but just being realistic. GW is still in his 1st "stage".

I did have doubts but Mbappe and Haaland continue proving themselves at their 2nd "stage(s)" onwards so no more.

Over high expectations is setting up for huge disappointments. Even classifying GW as that two is already getting ahead too much. Not yet not yet.
wtf is stage 1 and stage 2? what are you talking about

Greenwood is scoring and assisting healthily at age 18, and it's not like he's scoring flukes or lucky tap ins. His all round game is at a high level already I just don't see what else you would expect?

He is only going to get better. Only a massive injury is going to stop him becoming a star.

He’s so deadly that I automatically now hope any chance in or just around the box falls to him out of all our attackers. His 2 footedness (real word?) means any defender going to close down has to be reactive to his movements rather than proactive (e.g. showing a right footed player on to his left). That means he buys himself a few split seconds more to unleash rockets of either side.

The great thing is the more he builds that reputation, the more doubt approaching defenders will have on which way to try and shift him.

That smile is used as a mocking in this case isn't it. Or not, you just find it funny (benefit of a doubt).

Stage is just a simple term for the likes of you to refer to their next -- either seasons, competitions, or different "upgraded" club or league.

Mbappe continue to prove himself after joining PSG and moreso the World Cup.

Haaland the same after joining Dortmund and proving it at CL.

Felix is still finding his next feet with Altetico though that has to do more with injuries. We know injuries can easily fecked up youngsters development so hopefully he'll be fine. Hence, the hype/noise about him is less at the moment in comparison to before.

Greenwood is only in his first season.

They're impressive before in lower levels or in GW's case - first season. You can even do this with the other impressive youngsters over the years including the now-forgettable ones.

Understand? simple enough isn't it.
Substitute it with "levels" if that suits you more but that won't be the right totally alt. word to describe what I meant since "season" isn't really a level.

Statistically, cosses are the easiest attacking tool to defend. Liverpool have found a way to make them work but they have a few players who are really outstanding crossers and their attack is trained to convert these balls.

I mean, which top player really has crossing as a vital skill nowadays? Messi, Neymar, Mbappe, Hazard etc. rarely cross at all. The only ones I can recall who are realy successful crossers are Alexander-Arnold and de Bruyne. Most of the remaining stars have cut crossing from their game almost entirely. So this may actually speak for Greenwood, not against him.
I think crosses are statistical easy to defend because most of them are attempted suboptimally. Either the crosser doesn't even look to get past the first man or he crosses into a box where the attackers in there are heavily outnumbered. Liverpool make it work because they only really try them when both of those conditions are in their favour. Usually their 3 forwards are in or around the 6 yards, drawing in defenders and giving Trent the space to cross. Of course he has to be good at it too.
I think you're right about those forwards you mentioned not really crossing but I promise you, when it's highly favourable, they still do it. I literally can't remember Mason putting in one cross from right. For a player so two footed, one would imagine that he could. So that's all I'm saying. And yes it's very nitpicky about a player that I think is on his way to super elite in 2 years in time and is playing arguably as well as the other two fowards (Rashford needs to start driving at and committing defenders again). Can you imagine how much of a downer it would have been if James was the starter post lockdown instead of Mason?

How are you differentiating 'stage' and 'level' then?

It's going to be one of my obsessions, so I apologize in advance for future pesterings. But I don't see why people keep claiming that his future is defintitely as a center forward when he is performing at an exceptional level as an inside forward, it makes absolutely no sense to me when the role fits him like a glove. If deep down people just want to improve on Martial then based on what we are currently seeing, it would make more sense to keep Greenwood where he is and bring the elite striker of your dreams.
If so, we don't have to invest heavily in Sancho... buy a striker, CM, CB and maybe a young winger.

No but your post suddenly reminds me of Asensio. Seemed like the next big thing couple years ago but it seems injures have fecked him pretty bad.

Hope our boy is luckier with that shit. It's very important for him to be protected and well managed in this development stage.
Injury fecked him up but at least he's back and playing at a decent level

I don't think so, Sancho would be the fourth bonafide starter which is a good number for a team aiming to be the best in the world. A rotation with Sancho, Greenwood, Rashford and Martial would see us having an unstoppable attack regardless of form or injuries.

Yes but nowhere near what he should have become imo. This season he has played only 218' so far, just checked. I still remember the time he first busted into the scene with his ridiculous left foot against Barcelona.

Anyway this is pretty off topic. I just really hope our boy will be luckier.

P/s: just checked again and he was injured basically the whole 19/20 season so his number of minutes mean pretty nothing.

I think you've made up all this in your head to be honest.

Technically this is Greenwoods 2nd season. He played in the champions league last year and premier league.

He's scored in Europe, he's scored at the "top level" in the premier league.

Honestly you don't really need to look at any sort of record. If you can watch a player and see he is a higher "level" than others, that means he's good no? you don't play like this just by a freak accident or a crazy amount of form.

Yup, ACL for such a young age is terrible.

@Web of Bissaka can you please stop referring to him as GW. His name is Mason Greenwood. Not Green Wood.
If Mason or Greenwood is too long for you to type, his initials are MG.
Thanks.
He probably comes from the same country as mine.

People there have a habit of phonetically short name foreign people. For example VPS stands for Van PerSie :wenger:

I though I was the only one! :nervous::lol:

I agree 100%. The main problem will be if Sancho comes with his price tag, he will play...and on the right. Mason is/was magnificent there so he'll play LW, striker and RW to rotate.

Having seen almost every game of him this season, I actually think he's bettet at the left and will eventually end up there as an inverted winger. Playing inverted gives him so much more options.

Ok. So Rashford?

That's where he played in City's academy and it's his natural position.

After thinking that he is the new RVP or RVN, I have decided that he is the new Luis Ronaldo.

He is fast (neither RVP or RVN were) and strong, is a very good dribbler (RVN wasn't), loves to do efficient stepovers (not like C. Ronaldo at 18 who was doing them for show), can shoot with either foot, needs just a tiny bit of space to have a rocket shot.

Nevertheless, I would take him having a career like RVP, RVN, or Rooney, but I think that he can be so much more. A future Ballon D'Or winner if I ever saw one.

Has anybody noticed DDG is now sending the goal kick towards Greenwood? Happening all the time. And Greenwood has been stellar. Good strategy and shows team's confidence in the kid.

When I'm watching other teams play lately I can't help but compare their strikers to Greenwood.

I see missed chances and snatched shots that I would expect Greenwood to bury every time - it's insane.

He's just so calm and clinical in front of goal, there is always purpose to his shots, never hit and hope.

Don't know about anyone else but I think he'd be a top quality number 10.

Greenwood isn't close to being a dribbler in the vein of Luis Ronaldo. Think Mbappe with Cherki dribbling ability.

I think R9 was an incredible player but don't you think that Mason would have just welted the ball into the net earlier in these examples instead of beating people and then missing?

He has a gift for finishing, which is the desired outcome no?

He’s not a better finisher than R9 was either. Ronaldo is possibly the best player to ever kick a ball.

He played there as a younger player, and there’s no doubt that he’s the type of talent to me who could play any of the front 4 positions and be our best option there in the future.

Ultimately, I think he will be something of a 10 and a 9 combined. He’ll be a striker but not a Drogba type, which would waste him. He has been compared to Persie a lot, and that is the sort of player I expect him to become. He’ll be a threat from anywhere across the front line. The other two in the front line would have a greater responsibility to hold their positions I think, while he will be anle tondo as he pleases - as he can be a threat on goal from left/right and centre within 30 yards.

Sancho can play across the front 3. I don't see how purchasing Sancho will affect Greenwood development. I think he will improve Greenwood further with the quality Sancho possess it will have a positive affect on Greenwood to expand his game further.

It's like 5 minutes of stating the obvious. This is where I think Athletic are giving unnecessary content.
That's a pretty standard Tifo video though. They've been similar to that for years before they became part of The Athletic.

I doubt much thought was given when making this video. They are trying to get the views by taking advantage of the hype Greenwood is currently receiving.
