No debating it's a red, I just rather he'd of actually headbutted Aguero, as opposed to the nothingness that we actually saw.

In some games we need a player to do jobs like Fellaini did tonight. It's not very exciting to watch and it looks kind of shit, but it's important.

We need someone with work rate sure but that should one of many attributes the player has, not practically the only one.

Herrera is the perfect example; he has the work rate and the discipline but also has the technical ability to go with it. Fellaini doesn't.

3 hopefully

That would be a great result for us. We weren't winning that anyway and his sending didn't cost us the draw. 3 match ban for him means another 3 games he can't cost us.
You'd rather see Rooney midfield? Fellaini is not very good but he's a body which we desperately need right now, he's a fecking idiot.

Aguero is 5ft 8inch. Fellaini is 6ft 4inch. The only way Aguero makes that happen on his own is if he has a stepladder.
Fellaini lowers his head to Aguero, the little hobbit saw his chance and head butts Fellaini.

Look at the replay it's a double clash of heads, because Aguero strikes first and Fellaini leaves his head in its blatant!!

What's with all the shite in here such as "oh now everyone will hate him again" etc. What the actual feck? Who ever said they liked him? The most I have done is tolerate him simply because I have to. I imagine that's how the majority feel.

Because the last 2 or 3 games people have been posting some very positive things about him.

I don't think that's a red. Aguero moves his head towards Fellaini too, though it's more difficult as he is smaller. And then dropping like a fly makes it an easy red to give. Definitely stupid from Fellaini, either way though.

Thought he was solid defensively till he got sent off stupidly. Moment of stupidity has to be said

Does he ever play a pass forward, few times he could of slipped Rashford in only to play it sidewards. Most frustration was when he turned Toure (i think) on the half way line, ran 20 yards, Rashford made a great run, but he knocks it 5 foot to the left to Martial.

That's the most frustrating thing for me about him, no creativity, no adventure.

He did okay. Not his role to do what you're suggesting, he's shit at it and its clear as day Jose has instructed him to keep it simple. Thats why he's a squad player or at least should be if we had more midfielders

It doesn't matter if it's his role or not. If there is an obvious pass on he shouldn't be too scared to play it.

I can understand when a player tries and doesn't quite get it right...but if you can't even try what is actually the point in you as a footballer? It means you belong at West Brom, not Man Utd.

Teams who are good enough not to be lumbering around in 5th don't rely on players who can't play a simple pass. They have players who can do a job and pick a pass at the same time.

The fact we are relying on Fellaini and one or two others repeatedly in important games is WHY we can't get into the top four. It's baffling when people watch a performance like tonight and come to the conclusion he's done well.

There was one point in the second half he had a really easy ball down the line to play Rashford in, but because he was being pressed he panicked and played a sideways hospital ball to Martial, who had to dive to win a freekick and not lose possession. It was systematic of Fellaini's performance and summed him up as a footballer. Not good enough and not interested in trying to be.

Second yellow for stupidly tackling from behind right after a booking, but there was no headbutt.

It was a con job by Aguero.

The tackle was stupid, but you could also say that Aguero tripped himself up as much as he was brought down.

I don't think Fellaini deserves all the hate he is getting

Fellaini was pushed up the park so we could play that long ball up to him when pressed. The few times we had the ball in their half in the first 20-30 minutes was thanks to this. He disrupted play a bit, but gave it away lots too, like most of our players.

I'm fine with having him in the squad, but he can't be our third choice midfielder, we need 1 (or 2 when Carrick goes) who are better than him.

Completely stupid but i actually think Aguero was more the aggressor there. Aguero walks up to him so he postures and is ready to square up. If anything it looks like Aguero walks into him more than the there way round. Key thing was Aguero going down. Still daft by Fellaini.

He deserves it on the basis of being such a moron to put himself into that position. He lost the head. Plain and simple. Whether it was a head butt or not, he left it wide open to look like one. Idiot. Had to be pulled away then. I hope he's feeling pretty embarrassed right about now, he should.

By the way to those complaining about our midfielders repeatedly giving the ball away, you must read mourinhos writings about taking risks in football.

A team in its defensive shape gives up very little space and is at low risk. When you transit out of defensive shape into offensive shape you open space and incur risk. Thus the fewer players that transit out of the defensive shape the lesser risk. Of course the fewer that transit out of shape, the fewer forward outlets to find.

When you hit the ball forward, most of your players are behind the ball when its intercepted thus you have low risk. When you pass the ball sideways to try and keep possession if the ball is intercepted, your entire midfield chain/line is bypassed and chasing back and the opponent now has space and space equals danger.

Thus when parking the bus, you must either hit the forward pass if its on, if it isnt on, run foward yourself with the ball, knowing if you lose the ball by running forward with the ball you get ahead of the midfield chain and thus if tackled there is no danger as there is cover behind you. Only if sure are you to play a back pass, and only when absolutely sure a side ways pass.

Giving away possession is expected in these types of games, yes we could have done with pogba and a little bit more quality but while it was 11v11 city were very disciplined and wary of our counter and kept many players back to crowd out our outlet balls, often committing only 1 or 2 into the box. Its easy for less tactically sound teams to over commit forward as the low block repeatedly seems to give up possession cheaply and it just takes one good ball forward and you get a chance.

He's really just a poor footballer, survived this long on an overrated aerial ability.
He has the capacity to chest and layoff, but anything over and above that is way beyond his limitation.
His lack of technical ability is only eclipsed by his complete absence of decision making.
Until Utd rid us of this Moyes hangover, he will always be an albatross around out neck.

Yeah he's played ok but some were completely overrating his performances. He's hardly a very well liked player so obviously people are going to be harsh after his idiocy tonight.

Played really well today. One of our better players without doubt. Mindless 30 seconds ruined it. Thankfully it was late in the game.

The red was a red because heads touched but Aguero still committed the bigger crime. He'd have a ban too if I were the FA.

After the Everton game and tonight i've lost faith in Fellaini's presence in the big games. He's a squad player at best. I think we should break the bank for Toni Kroos

Just like the Hererra red at Chelsea, gets yellow then seconds later goes haring after the same player - stupid stupid stupid.. but both in high pressure games where both had done OK up to then. Hope Pogba is feeling brave and TFM doesn't have a dislocation

Fellaini should have known better to put his head to Agueros head, right in front of the ref after getting booked and committing another foul 5 seconds later  you couldn't script it mate! I agree with you though Aguero hit the deck like a sack of spuds no need for it at this level.

I thought he was clearly the best midfielder (not saying much) we had out there up until his red card.

The sending off is just stupidity personified. Especially when you consider he's already seen Herrera do exactly same shit at Stamford Bridge (get carded, then immediately foul the same player).

No need, but you have to have the brains to expect it at this level. Sanchez hit the dirt last night when he got hit the face with a ball, any premier league player is taking a dive there these days.
100% on Fellaini this one.
Completely idiotic.

I'm starting to think Fellaini is judged on a different metric to other players. Just because he has less technical ability in his whole body than Pogba does on his right foot he is allowed to have sub-par performances as long as he tries hard. It's gotten to a point where he is praised for doing the bare minimum like following instructions or covering for other midfielders.

Fellaini was expected to be the link between our midfield and attack; he played a lot of the game being the furthest forward midfielder and was making more forward passes than usual. But ultimately he did a poor job of that; he offered no physical presence to combat Toure despite him being a lump and never made an incisive pass into dangerous areas; instead taking an easy option.

Luckily the Red card didnt cost us the game; but Fellaini didnt offer enough. He didnt have much of a defensive burden thanks to Hererra and Carrick yet failed to create anything.

He's like the Trump of footballers. He's lowered the bar so far that we're tricked into giving him credit for doing basic, non-stupid, lowest common demominator football things.

The fact he did something stupid that could've cost us the game is basically a one over par game from him at this point (par being "general uselessness, a needless yellow, but just sort of there in a non-damaging way" and one under par being "brought the ball down well in the build up to a couple of attacks")...So after 3 years of this shit, we're conditioned to think his inability to play good passing football is something we're daft to expect from a £30m semi-regular Man Utd player.

It's just Fellaini all over - totally brain dead. Decent performance for the most part but in such a close game, he put his team in a huge disadvantage due to stupidity...and worse, he doesn't seem to learn from similar incidents previously.

Unforgivable IMO.

Ultimate irony is that I'd have been across the board p1ssed off had the ref came along and booked him for the second tackle. Which could have happened.

He's a moron for getting sent off but he played well. His own worst enemy at times.

You're having a laugh mate. He did fecking nothing on the player.

Refs should see through this BS. It's embarrassing. Gives football a bad name.

Every ref in the world would send him off for that - regardless of whether you think it's worthy or not, it is always going to be considered a red card offence. Moronic from Fellaini.

As I said in the post game thread, he was doing 'a job' again before the red card. Meaning he can not be terrible and actually be of use, but he's still not good enough. His ball playing was well below par as usual. Messed up some through balls which would've potentially seen Rashford through on goal. People will say 'well it's just a few passes', but it's that that takes any edge we should have away and we see it all over the pitch.

Totally agree. Moronic.
